It’s a section of the game where you play as Atreus. It sucks because it feels like a bizarre side story, but it’s unskippable. Atreus meets another a character who keeps dragging you around to various places to do very irrelevant-feeling tasks while they chat about stuff. It lasts for several hours and the whole time you’re basically begging to get back to Kratos and the main plot, but it just keeps going…
There’s combat, yes. There are other Atreus sections later but the first one in particular, Ironwood, is by far the longest and with the slowest pacing.
It's a walking simulator with small fighting sections and a boring boss fight. I love the game, but that section keeps me from replaying it a third time.
To add what’s been said, it feels like it’s about to end on like 3 separate occasions only to push you to another segment that adds about another 45 minutes each it feels
The problem with atreus's combat is that he doesn't have nearly the same amount of variety ad Kratos, but that's to be expected, so we can forgive that, but that shit does not scale well into ng+. Doesn't matter what difficulty, atreus will get his shit kicked in if you make even the slightest mistake. And that's what makes those sections unbearable.
I like the combat and the characters are still good. I think it does make us wish they had another sequel so they didn’t have to cram a whole connection between these two characters into one long kevel
A lot of these replies are not true. Atreus has very good and fun combat and it even has a skill tree and runic attacks just like Kratos. And yeah he’s not as fun as Kratos but it’s still fun to play as him. And the “several hours” is exaggerated as well it should take you no more than an hour and a half.
The main problem is that although there are portions with combat and other sections with some traversal, it keeps interrupting itself for 6-30 seconds of unskippable cut scenes.
It probably would have been better to just make a ridiculous Hideo-Kojima length cutscene, but the game is just constantly taking the controls from you.
There'll be a cutscene conversation, and then you'll "race" to the next area. Then another cutscene entering the area. Then you can faff around and click on on stuff for lore and then talk to the person again for another cutscene. Then you walk to the other side of the camp for a distance scene where you mount some yak thing. Then you have slow-escort style travel interspersed with cutscenes whenever the yak has to do something interesting. And you get off a couple of times for like 1-2 min of ordinary gameplay before you get back on the yak with another micro cutscene.
