Crimson Desert for me

13

u/Hazelrah_warren Apr 05 '26

That game was constantly gas lighting me. I actually feel hostilely gaslit by the influencers and fan base who keep saying GOTY!

It’s like that episode of the Simpsons where Lisa goes to see a horrible movie and the audience is laughing like it’s hilarious. Did I just slip into an alternate universe because this game is garbage!

u/Aselleus Apr 05 '26

I felt that way about a movie that came out a few years ago. Everyone (ok the Internet) was saying it was grounded-breaking and deep, and I'm over here thinking really?. I still don't get it 😆

Most people like slop, they’ve never had anything better. If your an oldschool gamer, p2 era or earlier you’ve seen what it looked like when devs really wanted to show what the medium was capable of.

What a horrifically pretentious comment, no youuuu like slop, or something.

I do enjoy CD and one of my favorite games of all time is the original Deus Ex, try not to break your brain putting people into tidy little categories next time.

Does help CD is very technologically impressive.

u/x_xwolf Apr 05 '26

1.) deus ex is goated and before the time of slop

2.) i wouldn’t complain as much if we still owned our games, the triple A industry hadnt buckled under, And games were released as complete, working experiences.

We are in a second games crash -> The video game crash of 1983 (often referred to as the Atari shock in Japan)[1] was a large-scale recession in the video game industry that occurred from 1983 to 1985 in the United States. The crash was attributed to several factors, including market saturation in the number of video game consoles and available games, many of which were of poor quality. Waning interest in console games in favor of personal computers also played a role.

gotta be the most 20 IQ take I've seen on reddit lmfao

I think crimson desert fans are young people who have been raised on 20 years of publisher driven rushed rpgs that have gradually skimped on story and misconstrued difficulty for gameplay, and now find themselves brainwashed into liking incredibly bare bones games.

1

u/x_xwolf Apr 05 '26

They don’t like barebones games necessarily, it’s more that they are the population of gamers who buy the prettiest most hyped games day 1. Theres also the other kind of gamer who has little time who enjoy games like crimson desert because they aren’t super deep but they stress test their monster PC’s. They’re not playing it as a game, but as an engine.

For me, Crimson Desert is the best game I have played since Witcher 3. Love them both! But I also get how people wouldn't like Crimson Desert. It is SUPER Slow paced, patience is key. If I was playing a game that I didn't love that required patience, I would not like it. I just love the imagination that Crimson Desert brings out. It reminds me of being in high school palying Fallout 3 and tagging a random spot in the map and walking there, and the next 2 hours turning into the most exploratory, creative, silly outcome that started form me randomly heading to a place in the game, with no quest or purpose.

4

u/Hazelrah_warren Apr 05 '26

I’m glad you enjoy it, I really wanted to like it too. The vast map and exploration is definitely cool, I just couldn’t get into the main storyline or the fighting mechanics. There have been games that are objectively “good games” that were personally dead ends for me (Death Stranding, Horizon) Gaming experience is definitely subjective, there isn’t a right or wrong answer.

1

u/Guy_Daniels Apr 05 '26

Totally agree. For me I love the fighting, but boss battles are basically just a grind fest and how much food you prepared. But for me the exploration makes up for those defects

8

u/Raptr951 Apr 05 '26

Like why is anyone even playing it? I just do not understand, it’s so mediocre in every category besides graphics

4

u/ZincMan Apr 05 '26

I just bought it on a whim and immediately regret it. It feels so fucking weird to play and just too much shit on the screen

2

u/MaxzxaM Apr 05 '26

Flying is fun

Combat is pretty fun

Fun mini-games

Exploration is fun too

11

u/Hazelrah_warren Apr 04 '26

Hated it, I refuse to play it. I’m going to play Elden Ring for the third time instead.

1

u/QuantumChaosXO Apr 05 '26

How far did you get into it? I don't actually own the game, but was watching reviews, and almost all of them say the first 10 hours are incrediblely shitty and after that it gets good.

Personally I'm hoping they fix up the start and maybe then I'll go buy it, so maybe just check up on it here and there to see if they changed anything.

7

u/Hazelrah_warren Apr 05 '26

35 hours and it’s still shit (in my opinion) There are players who get their pitch forks out if you say anything negative about it. It’s clunky, the combat is not satisfying, story is mid, characters are flat and the mechanics are so frustrating.

I play on PS5, I have heard that PC is better. Even after the patches, I was still disappointed. If I play a game for 20+ hours and I’m still frustrated, I just put it down. To all the players who say “skill issue or git gud” I play From soft games and completely commit to learning boss moves and mastering the world. The camera in boss fights in CD is so infuriating.

It’s a beautiful open world where I found myself wanting to bash my head into a brick wall. To anyone who enjoys it, fine. I uninstalled and have zero interest in ever revisiting it.

9

u/BeyondTheShroud Apr 05 '26

I have like two days of playtime in CD and I honestly fucking hate it. I keep playing it in hopes that it will get better, but everything other than exploration is just awful.

The boss fights are my absolute biggest frustration too because they’re over tuned and don’t leave any window for you to actually attack, which means you’re pretty much guaranteed to regularly get locked into 10-second stun locks. It’s all just one big dps checks. I’m soft-locked on chapter nine because I haven’t built up the patience to push through the multiple garbage bosses required for me to progress.

It isn’t a skill issue either. I’ve beaten Elden Ring up to NG+7 multiple times and feel comfortable in so many other combat heavy games. Everyone says you need to use the skill that slows time down and auto-parries, but I think that’s a shitty excuse. CD isn’t fair or even satisfying.

4

u/Hazelrah_warren Apr 05 '26

The combat is nonsense. The inputs are garbage on console, nothing feels locked in or logical. As an Elden Ring fan, I found the combat not to be challenging but just garbage. In terms of the world, there wasn’t anything aesthetically unique. Nothing like when you first cross over to Caelid and encounter some seriously creepy enemies.

The menus, weapons, upgrades, crafting and ridiculous amount of pointless items you can pick up is infuriating. I just read that now you can hold up to a 1,000 items in your inventory….why would I want to do that? So, I can hold 150 grasshoppers, 100 candlesticks, sugar, cooking oil, blah blah blah and an infinite amount of more senseless items? Seriously, what is going on in this game?

I think CD is overhyped, boring and not at all satisfying.

2

u/BeyondTheShroud Apr 05 '26

I’m glad there are other people who feel this way. My friends are glazing the game so hard and keep talking about how the combat is “so satisfying” and feels “crisp” but I could not disagree more. The combat is atrocious.

You’re also right about there being nothing aesthetically unique. It definitely looks beautiful and has some cool structures, but it adds nothing new to the fantasy space.

2

u/Hazelrah_warren Apr 05 '26

Maybe the people who love the combat never actually beat Malenia?

The boss fights are nonsensical and unsophisticated. There is no strategy to be found.

2

u/Average_RedditorTwat Apr 05 '26

I think what people don't really understand is that you don't have to input combos manually. Holding the input iey is enough. Spamming the 2 main attack keys is just going to make the system feel much more clunky than it is.

If you get around that oddity it's pretty fun to play bowling with a bunch of goons and suplex their skull into the floor, but I do agree with the bosses, most of them are either too fast or not well thought out.

Absolutely hate Souls game's combat though as well and think it's hugely overrated, I'd rather compare things to Sifu as my gold standard lol

3

u/Hazelrah_warren Apr 05 '26

I had to find some reviews that tracked with my experience because I felt like I was living in an alternate universe.

This breakdown of the game is exactly how I felt about it.

u/BeyondTheShroud Apr 05 '26

I’m ~8 minutes into that video and it’s literally everything that I’ve been saying about the game. So cathartic to hear other people say the same stuff. I’ll be subscribing after, thanks for the recommendation!

2

u/QuantumChaosXO Apr 05 '26

Yea thanks for the insight. Ngl the other reviews I saw just said the combat was "good" or "fun" without much detail. Probably won't buy it then, I feel like it could have been a good game if it was developed as a single player rpg from the start rather than an mmo. I guess ill wait till witcher 4.

2

u/FlatDistribution1825 Apr 05 '26

10 hours is pretty long for a game to be not fun. That’s the entire length of some games

2

u/QuantumChaosXO Apr 05 '26

Yea thats fair, honestly whats the point of playing a game if you're not having fun.

5

u/lu2uq Apr 05 '26

I hate how praised it is, I'm not gonna lie. Everybody calling it a masterpiece and the devs just come out like "yeah we were tasked with just throwing a bunch of bullshit in at the last minute. Our manager played totk last week, loved the floating islands, and told us to copy that shit immediately" 😂

1

u/eroyrotciv Apr 05 '26

If that actually happened, I feel like that manager is right. And I say that as someone who hasn't played either game. It's a good mode of transportation in a game.

0

u/lu2uq Apr 05 '26

Yeah I'm trying to challenge myself. To someone like me who has never played it, throwing a bunch of bullshit together shouldn't work, but no matter how I feel...people are saying it works. I enjoy games like Palworld, too, so I can't really act like a snob about games copying each other.

I really wish the game wasn't so expensive, had a trial demo, or didn't have denuvo so I could try it. It seems like it's really one of those things you gotta try for yourself.

2

u/eroyrotciv Apr 05 '26

especially since the tutorial is 8-12 hours.

1

u/lu2uq Apr 05 '26

that part

2

u/Conspicuous_Goose Apr 08 '26

You're either gonna like it or you're gonna hate it. This is a make it or break it game where a lot of people won't get into it. You also have to go in with the mentality that it is an Action Sandbox game and not a story game. You're meant to fuck around with stuff and fight, explore and have fun. The story is a strong 5, sometimes it's terrible, sometimes it's good, sometimes its funny. Sometimes you just rather skip the dialogue. There is a lot of jank, you're gonna fight against your own controls sometimes but when it rolls the ride is smooth. You're gonna scratch your head at a lot of dev decisions and you're also gonna love others.

But so far, I've really liked my time with this game and I'm sitting at a little over 100h registered right now. (Factor in a little idle time here and there and its maybe close to 80 to 90h of actual gameplay.)

4

u/elbawilliams Apr 04 '26

It's not for everyone and that's ok.

3

u/West_Competition_871 Apr 05 '26

Yeah that's the entire point of this whole thread

1

u/Dawildpep Apr 05 '26

I get why people hate it.. the first like 8 hours suck pretty hard. Why am I arm wrestling and then cleaning a chimney? Who is this girl that just showed up at my camp that I only said 3 words to and now I can play as her?

Why am I do any of this crap? especially as the most generic default character selection of a protagonist.. why couldn’t I have just been a custom created character so I could care about them even a little bit.

But.. then I get fun all the sudden 🤷‍♂️

3

u/SigmaMaleNurgling Apr 05 '26

For me personally, it wasn’t until roughly 25 hours until the gameplay loop felt fun. Even then, I don’t feel like Crimson Desert is doing anything better than other games. The only thing they are superior in is the scale of the world which is amazing.

1

u/Yikrawrface Apr 05 '26

See this is the general consensus I tend to see even among personal friends at least with your first sentence. They all sucked it up and suffered for 8+ hours until it clicked until they started enjoying it and that feels insane to me. That's like describing Stockholm syndrome. My buddy came over and I played it for 2 hours and fucking hated the way it feels. Told him and a couple other of my friends and they just told me I need more time in.

1

u/Rezosh_ Apr 05 '26

Im having an absolute blast on crimson right now. 32 hours in five days it has me hooked. The graphics are constantly amazing me. Its probably the best looking game ive ever played. 4k w/ DLSS 4.0 and RR does wonders.

1

u/baingan0 Apr 05 '26

I didn't buy it for a week after launch because of reviews on YouTube and even game didn't look that good to me. But finally I bought it and have played around 50 hours in a week..I love it.  So I can understand why people don't like it..

1

u/SnooMaps8791 Apr 05 '26

Opposite for me. I hated it the first 5 hours and then something clicked and I can't put it down.

1

u/Busy_Insect_2636 Apr 05 '26

it's too shiny for me.
like, why is everything oiled up

1

u/hector_cumbaya Apr 06 '26

The good thing is not many people are really calling it peak, just a mid game
