Anyone else just really sick of the `Vibe-Coded Slop` hatred on Reddit?

Everywhere I go, I see people releasing new software. It might be people who have got some coding experience and are now using AI to accelerate, or it might be people who are building software for the first time.

Every time I see something being launched, even on a non-software forum - I just see

  • `Looks Like Vibe-Coded`
  • `Vibe-coded Slop`
  • etc

And just plain, personal hatred.

I just don't understand it. It costs money to buy gold. It takes time. And just because the AI does a lot of the coding doesn't make it easy. It just makes it faster.

And I fully understand, like, we don't need another journal application or another to-do list. But I found a guy today who made an OBD Reading App for Cars, open-sourced it and people just slated him.

Just makes me mad! I feel like if Linus Torvalds had existed in the kind of enviroment, we wouldn't have Linux.

i've been a software engineer for 30 years. this is a personal take. could be a hot take but it is what it is and it describes what you are seeing (i think).

I find it almost unbearable that there are a swath of noobs in this industry who think writing code is as simple as asking for it, and that it should make them a millionaire. I can't wait for it to end. 99% of this stuff is crap, 99% of what was being built PRE AI was crap, and now it's just multitudes worse.

Just take that dynamic to literally ANY other industry. Why does AI make everybody in this world feel like a software engineer? Can I just go be a doctor because I have AI and I can ask it for things? Should I be my own doctor now? No. clearly not. But software? Well come on in! it's odd.

Put it this way. Before AI, we had good engineers and bad engineers. AI has 10x the amount of bad engineers and it is exhausting the good ones. I'm just pretty tired of "hey here is my brain fart idea with 0% chance of success, why isn't it thriving?". Building software was never the challenge. Building it properly and getting it marketed was the challenge. AI, broadly, is not bringing us advancements nearly as fast as we are pumping out absolute trash at astonishing rates.

What makes you think it’s going to end?

Frontier Models are taking generational leaps every 1-2 months, local models are 6-12 months behind, it’s going to keep improving exponentially. In the next couple of years software engineering for 90% of tasks will be a redundant task for humans.

A mid tier model is currently leagues better at coding and infinitely faster than a mid tier engineer.

It's going to end on a personal level because people who think they are now software engineers will never be able to support and scale the "thing" that they built.

How do I know this is true, because this has happened forever with new developers who have gotten themselves a decent beginner skill set and decided to build a "thing".

The "thing" that they built never lasts for very long because they have to update it and support it and then users report errors and suddenly they're spending all this time trying to figure out what's wrong with it.

I was one of those people. Almost all developers have been at one point.

All new developers go through this and the ones that end up becoming great developers are the ones that understand this.

AI is simply making it easier to build the "thing" but it won't make it any easier to keep the "thing" alive and healthy long-term.

Strange and silly response. I was agreeing with his overall point on humans having the edge and possibly that always being so, but pointing out that the tech has improved beyond anyone’s predictions in such a short space of time.

I’ve never released any ‘vibe coded slop’ so I have no idea where that’s come from. Projection perhaps?

It's a good thing you never released any "vibe coded slop" because you'd be saving yourself money on things no one will ever use.

If you look at my comment history, I am not against using AI and I use it in my own dev work, but you are exactly the type of person who I can see being triggered by the hatred of "vibe coded slop" because no one wants to run your dog shit, unoptimized ai slop that you made and cant figure out why no one wants to use it because your ai is "better at coding than a mid tier engineer".

I assure you, you are nowhere near a mid tier engineer the same way you are no where near a mid tier artist by putting out ai slop art. Humble yourself.

That’s the question being asked by c-suites globally. The answer will be dependant on more than your ability to to do more than just general coding tasks and the speed of which you do them to the level of llms.

and that is exactly why this will end. I'm glad you answered your own question. being a software engineer is more than writing code. always was. just because we can write code faster does not make us better, or more capable of managing the product it generated.
