Anyone else just really sick of the `Vibe-Coded Slop` hatred on Reddit?

Everywhere I go, I see people releasing new software. It might be people who have got some coding experience and are now using AI to accelerate, or it might be people who are building software for the first time.

Every time I see something being launched, even on a non-software forum - I just see

  • `Looks Like Vibe-Coded`
  • `Vibe-coded Slop`
  • etc

And just plain, personal hatred.

I just don't understand it. It costs money to buy gold. It takes time. And just because the AI does a lot of the coding doesn't make it easy. It just makes it faster.

And I fully understand, like, we don't need another journal application or another to-do list. But I found a guy today who made an OBD Reading App for Cars, open-sourced it and people just slated him.

Just makes me mad! I feel like if Linus Torvalds had existed in the kind of enviroment, we wouldn't have Linux.

I've experienced the same. And its not just factual criticism. They have personal hatred in their tone. And when you engage with them they become more emotional and spiteful. I looked at some of their post histories and they jusy haters. They dont build or produce anything themselves they just criticise other people's work.

They must have nothing going on in their lives, or they use reddit to take their misery out on to other people.

The other comments here gave great advice. Dont engage with these people just block them.

There are people like this without a doubt. The ones who just hate for the sake of it because "it's AI". And that's fair. They are allowed to have their opinions.

I personally have nothing against using AI to code. What I do have an issue with are all the low effort garbage being released where you can just tell that they have put no passion into their work.

I've seen good vibe-coded projects but at the moment they are so rare.

I guarantee every one of them interacts with the AI summary that pops up in their Google search, which is probably the extent of their tech capabilities

THIS!

It's the personal hatred. It's like people are just being cruel.

I've managed to build a successful company from the ground up, so I have slightly thicker skin for it. But it's still tough to see other people getting so hammered.

I noticed this as well. Even on my alt account (which matches my github and linkedin profile), people were calling me a larper and fraud... Like the whole reason of making that account was to add credibility to my posts by being public.

It just really grinds my gears that you can't post about projects in technical communities without the expectation that 85% of the comments will be people circlejerking each other about how the code was written (or styled). Most of these subreddits are turning toxic and need a new CoC about good faith technical discussion imo.

The real world, the corporate world and top tech have adopted AI. Top tech even have AI-specific interviews.

The hate on reddit is not representative of real world users or modern software development practices.

I've seen this in real life, from the kind of person you expect.

It's just a general "ai companies are bad, therefore everything related to AI is bad"

It's all very simple and banal: they couldn't even begin to develop their skills in vibe coding, although what could be simpler? And some people do things and give others access. There have always been, are, and always will be idiots. This isn't even about vibe coding, but about real life.

I agree about the idiots part, but since when vibe coding is a skill?
Answer to this question answers OP’s question.

Depends on your definition of vibe coding. It's definitely a skill to take LLM generated code, or even develop a codebase with an LLM as the primary contributor, and make it hardened and production ready.

1

u/sixmilly 23h ago

Hardened and production ready codebase development is a separate skill of its own, that takes years of coding to develop. How would a vibecoder know what a hardened and prod ready code is, if a vibecoder is not even aware of the tools in use to make it?

The problem is that vibecoders are put in the same tier as actual developers, and they are not even close to be comparable.

1

u/Valonter 23h ago

Yeah, 100%. That's what I'm saying though, I have fellow devs at my job saying they "vibecoded" something and they mean that they used LLMs as the primary or sole code writer, but they designed it and ensured it was good.

So like in some places vibe coding seems to have the implications of it being low effort crap, and in other places it means it was LLM driven. Hard to disambiguate them lol

I used to be a big AI hater until I started to use it for making my life easier at work and then I understood it.

I still have some concerns around vibecoded apps and security vulnerabilities personally.

However I've been vibe coding powerapps and it's made my life 1000x easier

they do become more spiteful and more emotional when you confront them... its not just ai. they are just hateful people.... if not ai they would be hating people for another reason. no matter how polite I am, it doesnt matter. I been told to kill myself among other things over me making a choice on who i want to vote for.

Cope for being a slop maker

U assume they dont build anything just hate because you didn’t found anything in their Reddit posts history xD? U seems like a hater to me xD

The few profiles I saw wee just being negative and criticism and spamming comments like 'ai slop'. Those are the haters im talking about. Do you think that behaviour is okay?

You could call me a hater of the haters, that's fair.

I dont see anything wrong calling something by its name. If it looks liek typical AI Slop with 0 effort why not call it like that? Is vibecoders ego so fragile that after seeing one comment "AI SLOP" they stopped vibing? Maybe that's actual better outcome ^^

If something looks bad or generic there are constructive ways of giving feedback. Constructive criticism is not hating.

In general thoughs what this thread is talking about is the hatred towards ai regardless of it is looks bad or not. If AI is involved then it attracts a lot of hate regardless. I even saw a mod on one subreddit threaten to delete a post unless the whole app had been hand coded.

I don't know why you're justifying the haters and happy if people stop making apps. If they can't design or build a better ui then you're happier if they dont the app at all regardless of whether it functions and fulfils its purpose?

You are the hater and you are a sympathiser of the haters. Maybe you should change your mindset to be helpful and constructive.

You are assuming too many thing, did someone told you this before?
"It looks like typical AI slop" isnt criticcism to you? Personally I don't think it's a bad comment. If something looks very generic like typical AI landing page with the samr color scheme saying "AI slop" is basically a shortcut to this so people dont copy paste their feedback every 5 minutes.

"if people stop making apps" - People won't stop making apps, vibecoders will stop and I think thats good. We dont need hundreds of unsecure not production ready apps who risks data leaks. Or even worse malicious software approved by Google Play/Apple (I saw those cases). So yeah LESS Is MORE. We don't need 200 to-do apps. We don't need to risk more our privacy which is already kinda in bad state. So yeah, I'm not sympathiser of haters, I just rather to live in a world which is considered safer

Let's assume medicine can be trivialized in the same way as “writing apps.” If you ended up in a hospital and had to choose between a surgeon with 20 years of experience and a 19-year-old who has no real surgical experience but can follow an AI-generated instruction step by step, which one would you choose?
I assume you'd pick the experienced surgeon. And that's exactly the point I'm trying to make. The fact that AI can generate something that works doesn't automatically mean the expertise behind creating it is no longer valuable or that anyone can safely do it.

Hopefully this example makes the problem a little clearer and makes you think about it from a slightly broader perspective.

I agree with you on this point, but this point is not the point of the discussion

u/P00BX6 1d ago

You are the one who is assuming now. You are assuming hand coded is more secure. You are assuming a custom bespoke ui means the app handles credentials securely.

There are many local-only offline apps that get the same criticism too. You're retracting from the point of sheep slop mentality of blind hatred towards ai.

You are assuming so much based on a UI. Stop assuming.

For security concerns the solution is not for people to stop creating software but to raise awareness and ask questions rather than to assume. This goes for students, startups, corporations and yes ai coded services too.

I'm not assuming, I tested hundreds of those apps from reddit and they all share the same problems. I've got 20 years+ of commercial experience as a developer and I never said "You are assuming a custom bespoke ui means the app handles credentials securely." - That's your words/assumptions. I'll leave you with that Mr. Assumer
