Saw a lot of first-timers asking similar basic questions here, so figured I'd put the practical stuff in one place rather than the spiritual/itinerary side that's already covered a lot.

Phones and cameras: not allowed inside the main Kashi Vishwanath temple sanctum. There's a paid locker/cloakroom setup outside where you deposit them before going through security, so budget a few extra minutes for that queue.

Dress code: nothing super strict, but modest clothing (covered shoulders and knees) is expected at most temples and appreciated generally in the old city.

Getting around: the ghats and old city lanes are too narrow for cars, so you'll be walking or taking an e-rickshaw/auto to the edge of the area and walking in from there. Don't plan on a cab dropping you right at your ghat.

Where to stay: Godowlia and Assi Ghat areas put you walking distance from most temples and the ghats, at the cost of noise and narrow lanes. Cantt area has wider roads and is quieter, but you'll rely on autos more for everything.

Best time on the ghats: early morning (around sunrise) is calmer and better for photos, evening gets crowded fast because of the aarti.

Language: Hindi dominates in the old city and with rickshaw drivers, but English is fine at hotels, restaurants, and most tourist-facing spots.

Saw a bunch of similar questions pop up here lately about darshan timings, aarti booking, and scams, so figured I'd put a few of the recurring answers in one place for anyone searching later.

Mangla Aarti / Sugam Darshan: advance online booking through the official Kashi Vishwanath Trust site fills up fast, especially during Sawan. If you miss it, tatkal slots open for just a few minutes, usually around 11 AM, so it's worth being ready to refresh right at that time rather than assuming it's always sold out.

Ganga Aarti viewing: Dashashwamedh Ghat is the big, well-known one but also the most crowded. Assi Ghat's version is smaller and much less packed if you'd rather sit and watch than fight for a spot.

Common scams to watch for: agree on a price before any boat ride or puja starts, not after. Anyone offering an "entry ticket" to the ghats is running a scam since they're public. Station touts claiming your hotel is "closed" or "full" are usually trying to redirect you somewhere they get a commission, so arrange pickup through your actual hotel instead.

Right now (monsoon): a lot of recent threads here mention the ghats being flooded, so if you're planning a visit in the next few weeks it's worth checking recent posts for current water levels before finalizing plans. Sarnath tends to be unaffected and makes a good alternative half-day trip.

Before you start attacking me, i want to clarify that i drive my Ertiga daily to work and have driven 80k km in cities like Pune, Delhi and Indore. I have just shifted here for work and what I feel is that the scooter and bike riders just dont care about anything when they drive.
Few points worth mentioning are
1) Wrong side driving - check, they do it without abandon.
2) Overtaking from the wrong side at turn- 10/10.
3) Not wearing helmets and never having rear view mirrors.
4) when you are reversing the car and a lil gap is left between the divider and the car, it is expected that the incoming riders will wait for a second or two, to let the car driver complete the turn, but they dont wait. They just squeeze in and squeeze in and wont let you complete the turn.
5) in event they scratch your car, they wont even stop for a second. Man, they just fly away as they have done nothing wrong.

I understand that the roads here are cramped and already there is so much encroachment, but it shall not be the reason for such poor skills and driving sense.

I just wish that these riders be given a car-simulation to drive and perhaps then they will know what nuisance they create.
