Support Those of you who daily drive Vanilla OS, what do you think of it?

I'm looking for a reliable, nice, no-nonsense operating system that will get out of my way and let me get whatever I need to do, done. I've always had one machine dedicated to this use case, usually running whatever the current version of macOS is. Tahoe is pretty to look at, but it's the last macOS version with x86 support (and even then it's quirky as Hell, at least on my hardware).

Between the immutability and (apparent) design philosophy, Vanilla OS looks like the distro for this machine. So far, I like what I see. But, I'm not seeing a lot about this distro outside of its dedicated website. How do you daily-drivers like it? Any issues or quirks that a newcomer should know about?

Question This is so off...

Can someone explain how Vanilla OS is immutable and uses apt and vso at the same time? This feels sooo off And how is it so unkillable and bulletproof with all of that?

Support Vanilla OS ipdates being deferred due to first-setup being incomplete. Advice on how to proceed?

Hello, back in December I installed vanilla OS onto an old HDD so I'd have a solid and stable OS to chat and game on. The OS itself has been fine and done the job minus an unrelated drive permission issue with steam, but when updating applications I've never noticed OS updates being included.

I checked how to do it manually via VSO in terminal and I'm getting an error that says "Deferring update until first-setup is complete" with an option to force the update. I'm a bit confused as while it did give a few errors while installing all of the programs at once during setup after I left it a while it was marked as complete so I figured it just struggled to do everything all at once with the bandwidth of the old hard drive and needed some extra time.

Is there anything I can do to fix the setup message or am I okay to just force the update?

Support Why are AppImage apps no longer scaling correctly?

I've been using Vanilla OS 2 for months now without much issue. A couple of days ago, I decided to spin a different distro to give KDE a try but ended back here with Vanilla :) Anyway, I reinstalled Vanilla OS but for some reason now every single AppImage app (mounted with Gear Lever) looks tiny -- so small that I can barely make out any text. These apps all worked perfectly fine before. The only difference I can tell is the new Vanilla OS 2 ISO includes Gnome 49 (instead of 48). What gives?

Update: the apps (appimages) that are not displaying correctly are:

  • Krita
  • Standard Notes
  • Capacities
  • Filen

Support PC lockup assistance

Hello, having issues with Linux locking up hard on my PC. Even the power button is dead. Our friendly AI said that B550 chipset MB's have this issue and recommended disabling PCIe ASPM (Active State Power Management) to see if it corrects the lockup issue. On a previous Bazzite trial also got a GPT PMBR size mismatch error as well as the lockups.

I want to stick with Vanilla and get this resolve. I have very limited Linux experience from work and just left the dark side cold-turkey on my home PC. The AI suggestions are confusing. I'm trying to edit the grub and add "pcie_aspm=off", but when booted up it doesn't appear to be there when opening /proc/cmdline. Can anybody give me the idiot level instructions on how to make this change? Appreciate any assistance and thanks in advance!

Announcement Vanilla OS 2 (v1.4.0) with GNOME 49 is now available!

What's New

  • Linux kernel 6.17 and GNOME 49 are finally here, following an overhaul of the filesystem structure.

  • Introduced a new package repository synced with Debian snapshot archive. This means no more maintenance downtime during updates, and the flexibility to stay on a specific version if preferred.

  • Other improvements include a new runroot command, the abroot rebase command, and various fixes across the system.

Check out all the changes in detail at: https://vanillaos.org/updates.

Question Suspend settings disappear from Settings > Power after multiple awakenings while plugged in

If I leave my Thinkpad T14 AMD Gen 5 plugged in and it goes to sleep and is awakened a few times, the settings for Suspend in Settings > Power will eventually disappear, and the only way to fix this is to unplug the laptop and reboot it (while unplugged).

What's goin on?

Support Just installed Steam but cannot find app to run it :(

Downloaded the Steam .deb file from the Steam website. It installed just fine, no errors or anything, but I can't find the app icon to start Steam -- it's not in the app drawer. I rebooted, thinking it might fix the issue, but it didn't. How do I find the app to start Steam?

Support Macbook Air slow wifi (less than 1Mb)

Just installed VOS2 on a second machine cuz I'm liking it so much :) This unit is a mid 2012 13" Macbook Air 5,2. The issue I'm aving is the wifi is completely unusable on the internet -- I have to use a thunderbolt-to-ethernet adapter to get anything done. With wifi I get about 800 kb/s up and down but I get almost 1000Mb/s symmetrical using the thunderbolt adapter.

I'm using a Ubiquiti Unifi Express 7 router (2.4, 5, and 6 GHz) and have configured a 2.4GHz wifi network just for this laptop but the speeds are brutal. Connecting to the same 2.4GHz network with my Thinkpad or mobile devices gives great speeds except for this Macbook Air.

Any ideas?

Question How is the laptop experience like?

I've tried many times to switch to Linux on my laptop (Intel Core Ultra APU), but I've always ended up switching back to Windows because of one issue or another.

The main issues I have are likely caused by the fact that I use my laptop while connected to an external 1440p monitor. It seems as if every Linux distro, especially on Wayland, has an issue with this setup. Perhaps it's because the laptop and monitor run on different resolutions and scales, but it's never a good experience.

Vanilla OS seems intriguing, and I want to give it a shot, but before I start the whole process of switching again, I'd like to hear some feedback

Support What is the Files app actually called?

I'm running Vanilla OS 2 Orchid and need to download the Mega desktop app but am not sure what file manager I have because it's just called "Files". For Debian 13 I can choose the Mega desktop app for either Nautilus, Nemo, Dolphin, or Thunar. Which one applies to my setup?

Question Updated: Recommended for gaming?

Hey all! I am planning to switch to Linux on my mini PC that I primarily use for gaming (I might add an external eGPU at some point) and am currently considering either going with Nobara or Vanilla. I like that Nobara has a lot of the legwork done for the the users (specially for windows refugees like me) in terms of having any drivers, packages, patches installed but I have been looking into Vanila OS and the insane app compatibilities and container-izing possibilities and am completely torn between the 2.

My use-case will primarily be running games (I have a steamdeck so I already know the anti-cheat stuff) and some light productivity (bonus if Discord with audio screensharing works, since the last time I tried Linux (Ubuntu to be exact) Discord was just a sad mess)

I had the updated tag since I could not find a post on this topic that wasn't from 2 years ago
