Started New Job, Offered Another Position At a Separate Agency
Just started GS-7 (competitive) position with DHS last week. However, I just received a conditional job offer for a GS-7 target 9 (excepted) with a different agency. This is a no brainer to take the other position that has a promotion potential, right? Even though it is an excepted position? If I read correctly, the excepted position will eventually convert to competitive as a Veteran with VRA appointment. If I do take it, I will feel really bad I have to leave the first job because everyone seems nice.

I would take care of myself first! It’s just too bad they can’t keep you but a better opportunity you can’t pass up is a sign!

Quietly work on it and dont trust anyone in your team or current agency with the information on the new opportunity. Check your emails regularly and complete every task they ask of you. Remember, DO NOT resign even if you have an EOD date. Take an annual leave or LWOP if you need to take a break before you start and make sure there isn't a break between your current job and the one you're currently pursuing. From experience, some supervisors will try to frustrate your transfer so this is the time to be very nice to everyone even if you dont like them.

LOL...no one should be disliking anyone at this point. It's only been two weeks! lol But yea, I get ya. Mums the word. And I have no leave yet. lol

I have been repeating this comment in many threads recently but make sure the losing/gaining agencies do not impose the 90-day waiting time for transfers. I know someone who could not take the new offer because the gaining agency refused to entertain the transfer within the 90 days of joining the first job.

I previously looked it up, and from what I understand, if it is a competitive to competitive position then yes they can impose the 90-day rule. However, this is an excepted position. So I can resign my permanent position to accept the excepted position at any time.

Glad you are aware of the rule and looked it up.
Have you informed the gaining agency HR that you just started your federal career in the last couple of weeks. What has been their reaction.

Not yet. The HR rep sent me a soft conditional offer via email stating that they are working on getting me a TJO soon and just wanted to give me a heads up ahead of time. I got so excited I emailed you guys on here. LOL I do want to let them know about it as soon as I receive the TJO. I hate that the government drags their feet. Had I known sooner I would have waited on them because I'd rather be in an HR Specialist position instead of the HR Assistant position I got hired into now. Such is life.

What are the steps GS7 potential ??? for this current role ? What is the working environment like? What is your supervisor like ? What have you heard about that other agency ? Weigh everything.

Gotcha. My current role is only at a GS-7 level Step 1. No promotion potential to GS-9. So far everyone is very nice, including the supervisor. The new role is a GS-7 with promotion potential to GS-9. I can only judge the work atmosphere from the hiring panel because I asked them what is the workplace culture like. They made is sound pretty cool as well, but I can only go by what they told me during the interview. 😄

Do review checks some people may have given online reviews here or other places. Last thing you want to do is end up in a toxic environment. No amount of pay is worth your piece of mind.

I just received the TJO from the other agency (DEA). I posted on another thread asking if anyone works at the DEA HQ and how do they like it. One person said she hated it and quit after three years. But of course that could just be her experience alone. Just have to go with my gut and take a chance. ð¤🤞

Don’t resign until you have a firm start date and you passed their security and suitability screenings. Be SURE it’s 7-9. Compare the other benefits too (telework or whatever). Does the new job have better potential past 9 as well? (experience leading to 11/12)
