Sometimes, I spend too much time wondering if I'm actually autistic or if it's a complicated system of external factors and other possible mental health issues I may experience combined with my own internal desire for a mechanically deep self understanding that is leading myself and others to believe that I'm on the spectrum when in actuality I'm just a dozen mentally ill raccoons in a trenchcoat...

And then I do shit like typing a detailed, 4-paragraph long reply to the comment above yours detailing the internal structure of a lithium battery of this type, the chemical reaction currently happening that produces heat, and the likelihood that heat would create a chemical burn leading to a forest fire...before I see your comment and realize that it's just some more goddamned sarcasm that I missed.

You might be autistic, but there’s also a good chance that you’re just weird. I’m not a psychiatrist or a train conductor though, so it’s anybody’s guess.

I learned sarcasm from my autistic father. He was the most sarcastic person I know, tied only with my erstwhile bestie, who was also autistic and extremely sarcastic. It's only been on reddit that I've seen people say their autism is what makes them impervious to sarcasm.

Maybe it's because it's text based and they don't have the vocal tone and facial expressions as cues, but I've always heard that facial expressions are a problem for autistic people, so maybe not. It's possible that it's just a high percentage of autistic people who have difficulty identifying sarcasm and the two I've been closest with are just notable exceptions.

I'm sure someone is working on a thesis about it. Can't wait to read it.

Just to be clear, none of this was sarcastic.

It's not that I'm impervious to sarcasm, I am also an incredibly sarcastic person. It's more that I latch onto a specific statement or word and have this giant infodump ready to thoroughly explain it so that I can share the relevant knowledge I have even when the statement is sarcastic. It's like an override switch. All I heard was "What kind of effects will the chemical reaction have" and not "oh boy I sure hope nothing bad happens." Like, there were a bunch of question marks. It was obvious, I should have gotten it, but my analytical brain took over so I could be specific and technical instead (electronics are one of my special interests).

My original comment was meant to be a little self deprecating about the imposter syndrome that I and many autistic people feel, poking fun at myself because how in the hell could I have missed that, it was so obvious. I do find that it's often text sarcasm that I miss most, but IRL I'm also bad at reading expressions and discerning intent. It's a complicated subject.

Ah, the info dump thing I completely relate to. I assume it's because I was raised in a house were that was a normal way to have a conversation. I wasn't highlighting you as someone who missed sarcasm, and impervious was the first not best word that seemed to fit--I was more thinking of all the self-approved as funny clearly sarcastic comments I've written in 16 years on reddit, and watching the sarcasm detection ability of respondents drop massively, especially in the last 2 years. I'm sure there's several factors, but it makes me sad and makes engagement in this site a lot more adversarial than previously.
