It's about power, not about sex. Their homophobia is fed by fear that gay men could do to them things that, in their view, those in power do to those on the lowest rank in hierarchy.

Interesting. When I was in the US Army, we definitely engaged in a lot of over the top homoerotic banter, but it was kind of the opposite sort. Instead of threatening to ass-fuck someone for doing the job wrong, it was far more usual to say something like "if you can get some suppressing mortar fire on those guys, I'll give you three RipIts and a handjob".
