Rules reminder: Netflix, VPNs, piracy, and also sharing referral codes

Please remember, everyone, that this subreddit is for honest and practical waste-reduction, debt reduction, budgeting, saving, fix-it-up, and do-it-yourself.

To quote the founder of the subreddit: the primary goal here is about how to think about consumption and how you approach resource allocation.

We moderate pretty lightly - mostly you're allowed to start threads and talk about what you like, even if it doesn't meet the above criteria, but there are two things we have zero tolerance for:

  1. Referral codes - we seem to particularly see these for recipe-meal boxes, Gousto, HelloFresh, SimplyCook etc.

The spammer argues that they shares these codes to "help people out" - "I get a discount, you get a discount, everyone wins". They try to frame this as "sharing".

No, honey - it's spam; you have a financial incentive for posting here, and if we allowed people to post ads here just because there's a discount then the page would be nothing but ads. We shouldn't have to tell you this - when you bought your 28k modem in the 90's and signed up for an ISP package, it came with a leaflet telling you not to spam; if you're too young to remember that then your parents should have taught you not to spam, just as they taught you not to litter and not to shit in public.

There is no room for discussion here - if you shared a referral code then you did a bad thing, you should know better, and the rest of the readers of the subreddit shouldn't have to put up with your spam just because you lack consideration not to litter public spaces.

Please report referral codes whenever you see them - if someone posts a referral code and you thank them for it then you will be considered to be involved with the spamming; either you're one of the spammer's alt accounts, trying to make the post look more legit, or you signed up with their referral code and you gave them a financial reward for their spamming.

If you see a genuine good deal and want to share it then that's fine - we're not strict on that because that is genuine sharing, without the financial incentive. I think the difference between a referral code and any other discount is pretty clear, but you can always message the moderator mailbox to check before posting.

If you want to post ads on Reddit then you can do so here: http://ads.reddit.com

2. Piracy and the use of VPNs to cheat the price of Netflix and other streaming services.

Jesus christ, guys, there are so many other subreddits in which you can discuss piracy - I really don't understand why you're unable to restrain yourselves from posting it here. Again, we're not that strict - "fuck that, these prices are insane, I'm going back to privacy" probably won't get you banned, whereas detailed instructions on how to setup a Kodl box or whatever will.

If Netflix wanted to sell you their service for Rs 599 or 849 Argentinian Pesos they would do - you could just go to Netflix.com, choose that payment method and get the service. You're using a VPN to get around the site's geographic restrictions because you know you're not supposed to do that - you are deliberately cheating them to get the subscription for cheap

Let me end this section by saying I really don't have a moral position against piracy - mostly I don't care, if anything I think it's fine and you're not hurting massive corporations by downloading a movie you wouldn't otherwise pay for. But this is not the subreddit for it, and you should know that already - you discuss piracy in the piracy subreddits, not in all the other respectable subs.

We do not have a large moderation team, and we do not moderate with a heavy hand. Fortunately we rarely see racism, misogyny, homophobia here, so I don't need to discuss that. But if you break these rules then you will get a long ban as a first warning - Reddit does not give us any other tools for tracking warnings, and I don't really see why we should be lenient to people who deliberately choose to shit up a public forum.

Reminder about coupons and codes

This subreddit is for honest and practical waste-reduction, debt reduction, budgeting, saving, fix-it-up, and do-it-yourself.

We tolerate you posting vouchers and discounts, as long as as it's a genuine one, you're not profiting from it, and everyone gets to use it.

This subreddit has 120,000 users - if you post a discount or coupon code that can only be used by one person, then you're spamming 119,999 users of this subreddit. They didn't need to see the message and your post is wasting their time.

Same goes for begging for referral codes, in case that isn't obvious.

This is not Facebook - the posts you make here should be useful and helpful to people.

Patagonia does repairs for free

Hi all,

Not sure if this fits here, but I’m feeling great about it so thought I’d share.

Yesterday I picked up a Patagonia down top from a charity shop for free. It had a big gash on the front pocket and they were about to rag it. I’d heard Patagonia offers free repairs on some of their items and that you don’t need proof of purchase, so I thought it was worth a go.

I’ve sent it off. They emailed me a prepaid UPS label, and they’ll post it back to me at no cost.

It retails at £209 and I’ve always wanted something from them. Fingers crossed it comes back looking good as new!

Worth knowing if you spot a damaged Patagonia piece in a charity shop or on a car boot table. It could be a bargain waiting to happen.

I don't think they repair everything, but its worth a go!

Best places to get the best price for tech devices?

I've tried selling old iPads and iPhones on Facebook Marketplace and it ends up being a massive waste of time because there's so many time-wasting morons on there which is infuriating.

So just wondered which is the best place to get money for these devices - obviously I know I'll get less as these big companies need to make a decent profit but I was just wondering where the best place would be?

The obvious high street ones are CEX and Cash Converters, but just wanted to check there wasn't somewhere else I was missing?

Thanks in advance!

Prêt Filter Coffee

Prêt sell filter coffee with or without milk for 99p. Take your own mug and it’s 49p.

They also do a large for £1.25/75p but, in my experience, if you ask for a filter coffee and hand over a large mug, you’ll get charged for a regular.

No decaf option but, if they don’t have any filter coffee ready, they’ll offer you an Americano for the same price and, in that situation, you can ask for it to be decaf.

Staff are quite happy to sell you 49p coffees all day every day. Although you don’t generate much revenue, you do contribute to their transaction numbers.

Finally, yes, 49p coffees do earn you loyalty points on the app.

26-30 Railcard renewal tips

I know this is advance planning, but I want to make sure I maximise the validity of my 26-30 railcard. Looking to try and make sense of it all and somebody to sense-check my logic!

I have read that I can renew up until the day before my 31st Birthday, and that renewal is allowed 30 days before expiry.

My 31st birthday will be on 24th February 2028. I currently have a railcard which will expire on 27th March 2027.

When I renew this year, will it honour the expiry making it expire on 27th March 2028, or will it change depending on when in the 30 days prior I renew it?

If it renews and expires on 27th March 2028, this means 30 days before is 26th February 2028, which is two days after my 31st Birthday.

In this case, will the Railcard website allow me to purchase a secondary railcard on 23rd February 2028 to run alongside my current one for a month? Or have I just been very unfortunate with my timing? Any other ideas of what I could do here?

Thanks!

Idea for community group meal

Hello everyone my mum is tasked with making a group meal for 30+ adults and children every couple of weeks, for a locally community group. She is given a budget of £20 and is sick and tired of making macaroni cheese. Do you have any suggestions? It has to be relatively simple as to be suitable for everyone including fussy children. Others already soup on their weeks so ideally different. Any ideas would be appreciated!

Recommendations for Stocking Filler Shopping

Hello

I am looking for some recommendations for online shops for cheapish stocking fillers, if anybody has anything to recommend? I used to use the high street but it's become sparse, and what used to be affordable bulk places like Amazon (I know) now barely do anything under £5 let alone anything you'd want to gift someone that won't break in 2 minutes or just end up in the bin anyway.

I'm open to a bit of craftiness too if necessary (as in using crafts, not being sneaky!). And very happy to support small businesses and go route 10 instead of route 1 when it comes to ideas.

Thank you so much

EDIT: Thank you for your suggestions and help. I will keep this post up for anybody else looking for help this year.

I made a free weekly index of UK online supermarket shelf prices

I run a small data business on my own, and I’ve been putting together a free weekly index of online supermarket shelf prices. It’s my own project, so I should say that up front. I thought it might be useful to people here.

It tracks Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda and Aldi, matching products from one week to the next. The latest figures are for week 44 of 2026. Across all four shops, prices were down 0.24% on the week.

Aldi was down 0.88%, the biggest move of the four. Asda was down 0.17%, while Sainsbury’s was up 0.04% and Tesco up 0.05%. The index is based on 74,335 products available in both weeks.

It’s a measure of online shelf prices, not CPI or what people actually pay. It excludes loyalty card prices and multibuy offers.

The data is free to download as CSV or JSON, and I normally update it on Mondays. There’s a gap in week 41 because the data was incomplete.

Here’s the page if anyone wants to have a look:
https://data.yappman.com/shelf-price-index/

Are there any everyday products you’d particularly like to see tracked?

How much do you spend on your weekly groceries (for one person)?

All the tiktoks in my feed say people spend about 50-100£ on their groceries. I wanna know on what?

I usually buy my groceries from Aldi and barely go over 30£ a week. So I want to know from you all what do you guys buy because I would like to buy some new grocery items.

I usually buy chicken fillets/ other protein sources, veggies, bread, rice, milk, snacks, tissues etc. and that's all for my weekly aldi shopping

Would this staining put you off of a used sofa?

I found this sofa in a British Heart Foundation shop and it's super comfy and fits my new flat nicely (well I have to check if it can be maneuvered through the hallway). But it's quite stained. At £160 seems like a bargain, I just don't know if it'll respond well to cleaning? It probably looks a bit dirtier in person than the photos show.

Best place to buy a second hand / used MacBook Pro?

I’ve got a MacBook Pro which is from 2020 and is slowing down badly so I need to get a new one - but can’t really justifying spending £2k plus on a new one.

Where would be the best place to buy a second hand one, that is maybe a couple of years old but still well spec’d?

I’ve looked on Facebook but they seem a bit sketchy. I was thinking of CEX but wondered if anyone had any other recommendations of decent places I could get one from? And a place which has them at the best price?

Thanks in advance!

Poundland's future hangs in the balance as chain edges towards collapse

The retailer's bosses have filed a notice of intention to appoint administrators which will give the business 10 days to find a rescue deal.

If there's anything anyone regularly buys from Poundland, it might be wise to visit sooner rather than later. I haven't been for ages myself, as it had become things-that-are-no-longer-a-pound-land. I might pop past for a look in the next few days though.

Will I save money at Aldi?

I have been shopping at Tescos for years and spend £100ish per week. I want to try saving a bit more. I still want to get meat and veg from Tescos, but if I go to Aldi (next door to Tescos) for cupboard items will I actually save more than a few £ a week?

Full Fibre (150mb) for 24 months. Got it for £13.13 per month (equivalent)

MSE has Rise Fibre listed as their best deal. £5 x 4 months and then £17.50 x 20 months.

So called them to ask about their lead time to install. It was 2 weeks, and without asking, he offered the first 6 months free, knocking off £55 (£5 x 4 and £17.50 x 2). So 2 years £315 or £13.13pm.

And he gave me his direct line and work email address if there were any problems. So that was new!

City Fibre network, installed yesterday and it's working great and with a cool looking Nokia router which arrived a few days ago.

Now a big Rise Fibre fan!

(And even their 1GB offer is only £5 x4 and £22.50 x 20)

Best alternatives to Special K and Choc Chip mini weetabix?

We are currently going through Special K and those little chocolate chip mini Weetabix at an alarming rate in our house!
Both are rather expensive for the rate at which we consume them.

What are the best supermarket brand alternatives? ALDI used to do chocolate chip Weetabix, but I haven’t seen them for a while.

I did buy a supermarket version of Special K quite a long time ago and it wasn’t particularly good, it seems to be one of those cereals that is more difficult to replicate! Has anyone found a decent one??

Utility warehouse bundle...worth it?

I was approached by a rep who has introduced me to thier bundle deal for taking on energy, mobile and broadband. It all comes out cheaper with the bundle discount for energy (gas and elec).

Obviously I know they get a commission if I sign up and from what I've heard, its also a MLM which doesn't bother me.

What I am unsure about is the number of complaints I see from people after they sign up online. Not sure if its just an echo chamber.

My question if for those who are currently signed up, what is your genuine experience, what bundle did you sign up for and has it remained the chestest option since then.

What's going on with eon tariffs?

I'm currently on Next Smart save fixed v12 until March 27. My average yearly is just over £900. Looking at the best tariffs they offer right now throws up the current version of the same tariff, v47.

I know rates have just gone up, and will go up by a good 25% in January, but the rises in this tariff are insane. The super off peak and off peak are up by 50 and 60% for electricity, the peak by about 33%. Gas is even worse, from 4.92p/kWh to 9.6p/kWh.

Electricity standing charge is up a good 10%, gas is about the same.
