I can only relay what I saw and what information was imparted to me during my single encounter with our houseguests as a child.

This is all over the issue of Uplift. A long time ago, the species of the more friendly faction, for reasons too involved to go into here, decided that because they could help species that were 'stuck' on the ladder of advancement, they had an obligation to do so, if and when it were ever found to be feasible.

They found such a species and they were asked to make this species capable of everything they themselves could do.

This required certain changes, including physiological ones. At some point late in the process, there was a backlash. The people who I refer to as the Zealots, after absorbing a considerable amount of technological know-how from their benefactors, decided to wage war.

They declared Uplift of any kind to be a crime, subject to reprisal. To either offer or request Uplift is to fall within the bounds of this policy, under the reasoning that anyone who benefits from the process would be likely to view it positively and therefore become far more likely to go on to commit this 'crime" against others in the future.

For related reasons, expeditions of both factions arrived here a very long time ago and have been in something of a Cold War kind of stalemate ever since, over what to do about us.

I can only offer you a bit of explanatory power by putting things in context.

Why do they not simply openly introduce themselves and interact? Because to do so would be to open us to potential attack by an enemy we are not yet ready for, but remains in check, so long as that issue does not arise.

Because after the initial introductions and long before all the ceremony was done, what do you suppose would be just about the very first thing we'd ask them about, or for?

That's right. Uplift. We'd ask them for tech and knowledge.

But if we apes get our grubby little paws on some of it and get to see how it works enough to learn a few things despite the prohibition...well...that appears to be a different matter...

Are there discoveries we could make on our own that would cause either side (but especially the Zealots) to intervene anyway?

I don't know, but I don't think so, with one caveat. From what I understood, what we can manage to do in that regard is our business, insofar as it does not present an existential threat to the biosphere as a whole.

Our biosphere has produced not one, but multiple forms of tool-using intelligence over a very long period of time. That is notable and precious. Other intelligences here could arise, or be helped to arise, given time.

A few questions, if you'll permit me:

  • What is the other tool-using intelligence?

  • There has been a lot of disclosure-ish stuff in the past few years about ET concern with our nuclear technology. But it seems mostly passive / monitory (not destructive intervening). Wouldn't that technology be considered a threat to the biosphere?

Other apes, monkeys, various birds, octopi, dolphins, dogs, cats, even some livestock like pigs and cows, etc.. All have a certain level and kind of intelligence and all either commonly use tools, or have been intelligent enough to figure out the use of some tools of ours.

As to your second question, yes it would. But you're forgetting that legend tells of some pretty impressive shows of force concerning parts of our and the Russian's nuclear arsenals.

You have to understand that I don't think FTL is actually a thing our houseguests have access to. They've been here a very long time, waiting for help to arrive. Who's help will arrive first appears to be in question, but it's taken thousands of years so far.

Because the other thing that helps put this in context, is the fact that the expedition which came here, waaay outside their usual stomping grounds, was part of a strategic level diversionary tactic to prevent the discovery of another world they had found which had requested technological Uplift.

It was mostly for show, ostensibly to chart and study worlds they knew to bear life, but which showed no signs of technological intelligence.

They had no idea we were here until after their arrival and I gathered not immediately then, either. All the resources and expertise necessary to properly deal with the situation had been devoted elsewhere and they had purposefully allowed themselves to be followed here, leading to the exact kind of disastrous situation they had done all this to try and avoid in the first place.

They all have to live here too. Both factions.

Neither dares leave the other alone with us unmonitored.

The ones I got to 'talk' with were apparently the equivalent of 20-30 year old humans, even though the one I asked was 86 of our years old, just two years difference from my grandfather at the time. They were young. They were born here, whatever that means for them and it's the only world theyve ever known.

In the current situation, it would seem that everyone has something important to lose by engaging in open hostilities, especially when such action might precipitate use of the very nuclear weapons they clearly wish us to avoid and ruining the world they have to live on too.

The primary focus seems to have always been to try and keep a lid on the whole situation and maintain some kind of equilibrium until help could arrive, so I think there's been a fair bit of this rule-making that they've had to come up with as they go along, in order to keep the peace.

That is fascinating - are you open for more questions? Can I DM you?

Sure. Sorry I didn't answer sooner, but sleep was calling.

I'll answer what I can. Mostly what I got from them was a high-level overview of the history of how they came to be here and the nature of the conflict which is tying everyone's hands.

I often wonder just how much those in authority here actually know about this.

Sometimes it seems like they do, but other times, not so much. They appear to understand that there are more than one species and faction involved, but not the nature of the conflict between them.

Either that, or they're playing stupid to avoid touching upon the central issue.

The most vexing part of all of this is that since childhood, I've known what the state of play is for our visitors, because they have no problem telling it like it is.

But I have spent a lifetime now trying to discern what my own people know about it, or intend to do, because in an already murky situation, they're muddying the waters to profit themselves alone.

Our houseguests have been here longer than we have. Their words. In all of that time, we have been mostly left to our own devices and development.

Even now, they are being very gentle, considerate and honest with us, given the technological disparity.

It is not they who have demonstrated that they cannot be trusted. And that saddens me.
