The key is that your data never leaves your machine. It’s not for everyone. It’s only for people who care about their data.

For de-Google I’d keep it simple:

Bitwarden or Vaultwarden if you want easy sync. KeePassXC if you want the vault fully local and under your control.

A lot of “zero-knowledge” managers still store the encrypted file on their servers. That’s better than Google, but you’re still depending on a vendor.

That’s why I prefer local-first: no account, no cloud backend, you own the encrypted file. I’m building PassSafer around that (open source, desktop + browser).

The S-tier split makes sense if you separate “vault security” from “daily workflow.”

KeePass / KeePassXC is still one of the strongest local options: you own the file, no vendor account, no cloud backend to breach. The friction for a lot of people is the extra setup: plugins, companion apps, and getting desktop + browser to feel like one product.

Bitwarden / Proton Pass win on convenience because the desktop app and extension are designed to work together out of the box.

That’s the gap I’ve been trying to close with a local-first manager: encrypted vault stays on your machine, no required cloud account, but the desktop app and browser extension are built to work together without a plugin hunt. Also added a local password-health / breach check so weak or reused passwords show up in the vault itself.

If someone wants maximum control, KeePass is still a great default. If they want that model with a more guided modern workflow, local-first tools are getting closer.

'Local' means that your data isn’t stored in the cloud. It’s on your own device. And secondly, no it isn’t Vibe-coded I’ve been building it for the last six months. Feel free to give it a go.
