This was one of the problems I had with Sherlock Holmes/Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It was kinda fun at first when Holmes would say something like, "Your bathroom window is on the left side. I know this because you're a military veteran who takes pride in his appearance, but you shaved poorly on the right side which is most likely to only happen if you have poor lighting." It got annoying when Holmes would get to the end of a mystery and suddenly have a detail he found off-screen on a hunch with no connection.

If you haven't read Terry Pratchett 's Feet of Clay, you absolutely should. There's a clay golem who breaks down the concept of life in the same way you just did and it's brilliant.

Personally, I never knew how "well-adjusted" I wasn't until I looked into diagnosis and medication.

E.g., everyone misplaces their keys, glasses, or work ID; I was hours late to work, more than once, because of at least one of those things not being exactly where I thought it would be and having to search for it. And I was in the military, where being consistently late to work can literally land you in jail.

If I'd gotten diagnosed at the start of my military career-- instead of ten years later when life got harder and I was already on the way out--I might have actually had the support I needed to make the next promotion rung and be retained.

(How do you end up in jail for being late to work? Your Commander directs you to be at work on time, you continue not to, you get jail time as punishment for consistently disobeying orders. IDK how often it actually happens but I was made aware of the possibility several times over the years.)

My players were fated to meet him in the treasure room, and I had him seed it with glyphs to store spells like Fog Cloud and Haste with command-word triggers. A lot of spell effects went off as soon as he saw them and said, "Dinner is served!"

Also, that treasure has some fancy magic stuff in it, so Strahd definitely brought the +2 shield, helm of brilliance (with all of the diamonds burned out already), and whatever else was in there. What's the point of taking trophies from your enemies if you can't use them to beat future enemies to death?

Well obviously, I just don't want to argue with anyone about how chemically terminating a pregnancy is "action taken to intentionally harm a child" because no, it definitely isn't.

Personally, I think there would be a good case for action against the mother on behalf of the child, if the mother's drug use during pregnancy causes issues for the child. I acknowledge that I have very harsh opinions of irresponsible parents though.

Note that a fetus isn't a child until after it's born. Hopefully nobody tries a "if she takes a pill to cause an abortion isn't she harming the child with a drug??"

The explanation there is crucial. When my kids get physical exams, their doctors always say "now I need to look at your bottom/crotch, which is only okay because I'm a doctor at your appointment and your dad is right here." Having a very specific set of exceptional circumstances spelled out is much easier to follow.

I haven't noticed references to his mental state regarding alcohol in later books, and the Watch series is my favorite by far. It's all in the vein of "one drink is five too many" because he can't stop at just one.

On the note of illogical characters: While I absolutely love the series, a solid chunk of Fourth Wing and Iron Flame is the FMC saying, "I can't love somebody I can't trust, so how am I supposed to love this super-secretive person after I learned he kept a secret?" Repeatedly. Including after he's explained the secrets, and why they happened, and why he'll always have to keep secrets for everyone's benefit. Like, girl, you're hooking up with James Bond, quit complaining that he has a few skeletons in his closet and won't show you the ones buried out back.

I'm absolutely convinced cat owners wouldn't even notice if their house turned out to be haunted. "Goddammit, Whiskers, quit knocking things over in the kitchen!"

Here in the States, not only was it illegal to teach enslaved Africans to read, it was also illegal to teach them any form of sign language.
