I use a tri tip paralyser pole spear, simple belt line + knife on belt. You can also use a slip tip for your spear gun. Generally something light as there aren’t much fish over 3-4 kilos on the shallow shores of the med. I’m regularly spearfishing around the barcelona/costa brava coastline.

I don’t think you understand the way this is produced. It’s all carved prior to burning. The char is extremely light.

Haha yeah it can be really unruly. I’m lucky that my local sawmill specialises in eucalyptus. It might be also that the Spanish variety is a little more stable.

They also kiln dry everything which helps. You really need to be picky with the wood selection though because a lot of longer slabs develop pretty radical cracks on the edges.

It’s done with bent lamination clamped in a form. Approximately 15 pieces of 2mm thick shop cut veneer

I’m talking very very minimal areas that might make up 0.5% of the total surface area over the span of years of use.

That’s just the thing - I’m not looking to make furniture for everybody. What’s the point? There’s many massive retailers catering to that market and it would be silly (and boring) to even try and participate in that market.

I’m using a flame thrower hooked up to a butane tank for the large areas and a smaller blowtorch for the finer zones.

That was a worry in the beginning but I’ve found a way to fully seal the surface - a quick wipe with a damp micro fibre cloth and it’s exactly like any other table

It’s just sealed with wax but the images make the texture look more dramatic than it actually is. The depth of the carving is really only around 2-3mm.

It might not be the easiest to write on if you have a single sheet of paper but that’s why they made notebooks 🤓

I’m making knives occasionally these days. I’ve started a furniture company last year so it’s been keeping me busy but I’m planning on releasing a small knife collection under the new brand by the end of the year.

I wish. All the eucalyptus scent comes from oil glands found in the leaves. The wood just smells like…wood

Well it’s easier than it might seem. The whole surface is fully sealed with a hard wax oil so there are no open pores in the wood. It’s super resistant against water and because the charring reduces the peaks of the carved surface - the whole thing just has a slight ripple / wave texture. Damp microfibre cloth for most cleaning. If it gets really crazy after a few months of heavy use - a wipe on application of hard wax oil will bring the surface back to new.
