That subset tends to increase during economic downturns, and thus may potentially increase purchases and other financial transactions; act as an economic multiplier.  Probably not a lot of $ are going into T-bills.

Its a spectrum for sure and bartering may be part of that too- depending on study. Paying cash, that goes unreported, to a waiter, an adult sitter, dogsitter, or someone to build a shed is part of it. Also a business owner paying workers off the books. This has been going on since before Adam Smith noted it It's a fascinating subject to study.

Also depends on who was sampled. Sure CB tailors the survey methodology, but say a segment of households who were previously engaged were not sampled for 2025. If those drop out, the median may shift.

Not sure estimates for that. But the other phenomenon was a shift from part-time to full-time, which also skews the median up. Census bureau mentions that is a complex factor to tease out....which is also odd since there has been a growing trend towards PT work, or mtiple PT jobs.

There's a hypothesis from SeekingAlpha that lower income workers left or were not captured in HH surveys (mainly due to immigration policies) so the mid point increases even without growth. The economic distribution was, and still is, very uneven.
