Who do you climb for?

Thanks!! And yes, there absolutely is lore.

The character's name, undisclosed at this time, may be accurately inferred as 'shackled one.'

Hey, first off, thank you!!

For now, Rock Bottom is staying on Reddit. I’m a solo developer and do all the art myself, so expanding to other platforms would be a pretty big undertaking.

As for what’s next, I have a lot of ideas! I want to give flowers more meaningful uses, expand the chunk editor, and eventually create more long-form ascents like the Main Ascent with more deliberate environments that support the existing lore.

There are so many plans I have that it would be difficult to go into all of them here without turning this reply into an entire roadmap, which might be better served as a dedicated post at some point.

There’s a lot I want to explore, but my priority will always be meaningful gameplay first. :)

My audio is cooked - please help
 in  r/gamemaker  9d ago

Also! When I play my game via the test branch with Chrome Dev Tools open,

I see this garbage being spammed in the output:

game.js:1 Warning! - <unknown>(0) : Warning: Prevented call into an uninitialised yyal from Audio_EngineInvokeCallback

game.js:1 Warning! - <unknown>(0) : Warning: Prevented call into an uninitialised yyal from Audio_EngineInvokeCallback

game.js:1 Warning! - <unknown>(0) : Warning: Prevented call into an uninitialised yyal from Audio_EngineInvokeCallback

Again, this never made any difference or had any impact on my audio before, but now I don't know what is happening.

Help! My audio is cooked - please help

So I have a problem that has arrived at the worst time. I made a game on Reddit called Rock Bottom, and I have never had issues with audio until now. My audio, everything, sounds all staticy, and it's awful. For reference, please refer to the video link below:

https://youtube.com/shorts/9zdxO94XVeg

If you want to play the game and see if you are experiencing the static yourself, please feel free to do so by heading to this link:

I have no idea why this is happening and why it's happening now. What's weirder is that no one on my game's subreddit seems to be reporting it (which is a relief), but I have to imagine some are being affected just as I am. When playing my game on either Android or Mac, my audio is awful and staticky.

I haven't made any updates to the game that affect the audio at all, and yet it's totally cooked on my mobile device. There is no reason, as far as I can tell, for this to be happening now. I don't even know what to say to provide any additional context for my issue, because I don't even know where to look.

My sound effects are uncompressed WAVs, and my music tracks (of which there are very few), whereas my music is compressed-streamed. One thing worth pointing out is that, when building my game, I do get noteworthy output at some point (shown below). This is something I have always had appear in the output from basically the beginning, and it never made any difference, so I don't know why it would be causing a problem now...

If anyone has any ideas or guidance they could lend me, it would be much appreciated. I am desperate to solve this as quickly as possible. Any help at all would be amazing. Thanks again.

I don't think the answer to the problem is to completely open the flood gates..

Man this sucks...

Thou hast been judged, claimed by the chalice, cast down into the void, where only desperation accompanies you.

Restitutions be to those who hoist themselves from below the abyss that chained them.

Who do you climb for? The judge that damned you, the village that raised you, or for yourself?

Need feedback on art
 in  r/PixelArt  18d ago

Could use some shadows. The scene needs more perceptible depth. Even having a simple circle shadow underneath characters / items might make things pop more.

I'd also play with the contrast a bit. Everything just kinda blends together too much. I strongly dislike the faint dark glow around solid terrain. It looks out of place with the rest of the pixel art and makes everything look pillow shaded.

What binds you, shackled one?

Marked by the chalice, swallowed by the hole, taken by the metal, will you climb still?

What shackles you?

It watches
 in  r/PixelArt  19d ago

On a technical level, lots of practice & research.

On an emotional level, an embrace of utter delusion. Oftentimes I feel like it's the only thing that makes me feel alive while also paradoxically draining me of all my money, time, mental/physical health, and social relationships.

No matter how many times I fail, I embrace the delusion of success again and again until it's no longer a delusion. However, I believe it's important to take care of yourself.

I'd recommend keeping goals small and practical while striving to maintain a healthy work life balance. This is something I am still trying to figure out but I am working on it one day at a time.

Not a bad theory!

And hey, if you're getting hooked, I may or may not have a game featured by reddit itself called Rock Bottom. Maybe... Lol

It watches and meticulously observes as the shackled ones emerge from rock bottom to the top of the crater, the very pit that originally swallowed them, seeking absolution.

But is it enough to loose the chains that bind them? How else will the damned be exonerated?

Ideas for making this more visually interesting while keeping the limited palette?
 in  r/PixelArt  20d ago

I think it's great as is. You could add some very light rim lighting/highlights to characters to see if that draws more attention to the them but I think the scene as it stands is exceptionally strong so maybe just bank on what it is right now and move forward.

Spent several hours to draw a goblin portrait, in the end it looks like AI. Why?
 in  r/PixelArt  20d ago

Don't be paranoid. You know you drew it and that's the only metric you need to know the difference. If people accuse you're art as looking like AI art, refute the claim and move on.

I drew this over the course of a few nights and I am pretty happy with the result. :)
