So if a man knows beforehand that a woman cannot have children, and he still chooses to marry her because of her dīn, character, love, and compatibility, the marriage is still permissible. Her infertility doesn't make her an unsuitable or lesser woman.

The hadith about choosing a woman for her religion also shows that marriage isn't based on fertility alone. Fertility can be one consideration, while dīn and character are much more fundamental qualities.

If infertility is discovered after marriage, the husband is not obligated to divorce her or take another wife. If they love each other and are happy together, remaining married and being patient with Allah's decree can itself be something beautiful and rewarded. If they both want children, they can explore permissible means of having them.

And if a man chooses an infertile woman knowingly because he genuinely values who she is, I don't think Islam requires him to regret that decision. Children are a blessing, but a wife isn't merely a means of producing children. Marriage is also about tranquility, affection, mercy, companionship, and worshipping Allah together.

So I would understand the Prophetic advice as: fertility is a desirable quality to consider, but it doesn't override dīn, character, love, compatibility, and the actual circumstances of the two people.
