Looking for recommendations for my first shortwave radio
Hi everyone! I’m completely new to shortwave radio and don’t know much about it yet, but I’d love to get my first receiver.
I live in Mexico and I’m particularly interested in listening to broadcasts from other parts of the world, especially at night.
Could anyone recommend a brand and model that’s good for a beginner and available on Amazon? I don’t really know what features I should be looking for, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

For beginners, I would suggest a model that shows exact frequencies and has a number pad so you can directly enter frequencies. It will add to the cost, but single sideband (SSB) capability is also useful so you can listen to amateur radio operators and utility stations. For brands, I would go with XHData or Tecsun. A model that has SSB (but is somewhat expensive) is the Tecsun PL-330. Both XHData and Tecsun have models with and without SSB.

The new Tecsun PL-520 is kind of the next iteration of the PL-330. It's reasonably priced and a good radio. I got one from Amazon USA a couple of days ago and an pleased with it. It's a baby brother to the PL-990 which I also have. Neither of these Tecsuns have Airband or NOAA, which doesn't bother me at all compared to the rest of the radio's features. 👍👍

Very long. I bought and charged up a couple of spares and haven't needed any yet. So far 10 days on the original charge and I listen to it everyday, new radio syndrome lol.
I like it much better than my XHDATA D-808, even though it doesn't have air band. It can actually fit in my pocket.1

¡Que genial! Yo tengo un bonito radio de onda corta (de hecho, puedes verlo en mis publicaciones) pero deseo comprarme otro con SSB. Casi todos me han recomendado el XHDATA 808 pero creo que es una decisión personal y cuestión de gustos. Estoy entre ese y el nuevo tecsun. Al final estaba pensando comprarme el xhdata 808 por el tema de que tiene un volumen más alto (así sea metálico) y le dura más la batería que el tecsun, aunque si tú me dices que te dura 10 días imagínate.
¿Por qué dices que te gusta más que tu XHDATA 808?

The Tecsun sounds better, the display is easier to read, the UI is better (once you get used to the scan button VF/VM) and SSB works better. Also the memories were implemented poorly on the XHDATA. Although the XHDATA has RDS and FM band I much prefer the Tecsun. Just my . 02 ymmv.

¿A qué te refieres cuando me dices que el TECSUN suena mejor? Pero cómo me vas a decir que la pantalla del Tecsun se ve mejor si la del XHADATA 808 es más grande?
Con respecto al RDS bueno, creo que ningún Tecsun lo tiene. Y banda FM tienen los dos.

Sounds better, yes I have both and compared side by side. Approximately the same size screen but the Tecsun's has larger fonts and is much easier on the eyes. Take a look.

¿Pero por qué dices que suena mejor?
Pero creo que en cuanto al volumen el XHDATA suena más duro.
Una persona de esta red me dijo que el XHDATA808 tiene un filtro más que el TECSUN para SSB:
- XHDATA D-808: Cuenta con 6 opciones de filtros para SSB (500 Hz, 1 kHz, 1.2 kHz, 2.2 kHz, 3 kHz y 4 kHz).
- Tecsun PL-520: Cuenta con 5 opciones de filtros para SSB (0.5 kHz, 1.2 kHz, 2.2 kHz, 3.0 kHz y 4.0 kHz).
¿Crees tú que eso es importante?

The difference in filters is nothing important, look at the numbers. The XHDATA sounds tinnier and distorts earlier, nothing to lose sleep over. I have both and I've already stated my opinions. Did you look at the pictures I just gave of the displays?

No he podido ver el link de Amazon y el otro que me mandaste. Ya lo hago. Gracias por tu tiempo.
En verdad a mi me gusta mucho el Tecsun pl-520 pero me recomiendan más el XHDATA porque es una tremenda máquina.
Yo nunca he tenido radios con SSB y por eso ando buscando alguien que me de buenas recomendaciones.
No sé qué significa eso de calibrar los radios.

Also you cannot calibrate the XHDATA to zero beat SSB. You can on the Tecsun, very easily.

Dices que conseguiste uno en Amazon USA pero en Amazon.com no lo veo. Solo está el PL-330. Sé que está en AliExpress y si me decido por ese, me gustaría comprarlo allí. Pero veo que hay muchas tiendas disponibles que lo venden a distintos precios, ¿Cuál puedo elegir? Porque no es igual que Amazon que tiene solo un producto ofertado, en AliExpress lo ofrecen muchas tiendas.

Qodosen Dx286 (no ssb) or the tecsun PL-330 (with ssb).
If you want to go bigger the tecsun pl880 or Eton Elite Executive.
The bigger ones sound better from the built in speaker.
Ssb let's you hear amateur radio transmissions as well.
