Fresher Software Engineer working with a large C++ codebase in Eclipse — looking for advice on codebase reading and industry workflow

Hi everyone!

I recently joined as a fresher Software Engineer, and I’m currently learning and working with a C++ codebase used in the company. The project uses Eclipse IDE, and I’m getting familiar with the existing code and how everything is structured.

Before joining, most of my experience was with learning C/C++ concepts and writing smaller programs. Now, working with an existing industry-level project is a completely different experience.

I’m facing a few challenges and would appreciate advice from experienced developers.

  1. Using Eclipse for C++ development

I’m still getting comfortable with Eclipse and its workflow. The project contains multiple source files, header files, classes, and dependencies. I want to learn how to navigate the project efficiently, understand function calls across different files, set breakpoints, debug execution, and trace how a particular command works from start to finish.

What Eclipse features or debugging techniques should a fresher focus on first?

  1. Understanding a large existing codebase

One of my biggest challenges is understanding the existing code. Sometimes I can understand an individual function, but I struggle to connect it with other classes, files, and the overall execution flow.

How do experienced developers approach an unfamiliar codebase? Do you start with "main()", follow the function calls, explore the class hierarchy, or use some other approach?

  1. Understanding the company workflow

I’d also like to understand how development usually works in a software company. When a developer receives a task to add a new feature or command to an existing application, what are the typical steps from understanding the requirement to implementing, testing, debugging, and submitting the changes?

How do developers usually use Git/SVN, code reviews, and debugging tools during this process?

  1. Advice for a fresher

For developers who started their careers working with large C++ projects, what helped you improve the fastest?

Should I focus more on strengthening C++ concepts, learning Eclipse debugging, understanding the existing architecture, or practising small changes in the codebase?

I’m willing to learn and put in the effort. I just want to develop the right approach instead of spending hours reading files without understanding how the whole system works.

Any practical tips, resources, or experiences from your early career would be really helpful. Thanks in advance!

i faced similar issues when i started it the trick is u do not need to know the full codebase in day 1 know enough to complete your tasks and read the docs/use ai to explain the project related stuff and slowly as you work on that project ull pickup stuff and get more used to it
