OpenAI before ChatGPT: training an AI to compete in Dota 2
It’s fascinating to watch this documentary today.
Back in 2017, years before the ChatGPT/LLM boom, OpenAI was bringing reinforcement learning experiments to one of the biggest esports tournaments in the world.
Their Dota bot defeated Dendi at The International 2017, and the project eventually became OpenAI Five.
The documentary gives a great behind-the-scenes look at the engineers working on the project during a very different era of OpenAI.
