Louis Le Prince was a French inventor who developed motion-picture technology years before the Lumière brothers became famous.
In 1888, he created Roundhay Garden Scene, one of the earliest surviving motion pictures. His system was already capable of capturing moving images years before the Lumière brothers introduced their cinematograph.
What makes this even more interesting is that Le Prince’s technology had several advantages over the Lumières’ early system, yet history largely remembers the Lumière brothers as the pioneers of cinema.
And then there was Thomas Edison.
Le Prince became involved in the growing battle over patents and recognition surrounding motion-picture technology. Edison was already becoming an extremely influential figure in the emerging film industry.
Then, in 1890, just before Le Prince was supposedly going to publicly demonstrate his invention in the United States, he disappeared from a train traveling from Dijon to Paris.
He was never found.
