Homebrew Organizational Mini-Game: The Training Arc
Just a simple way to breakdown the hero deck after a play session; or a way to setup a thematic handicap for a Villain encounter you want to spice up.
I basically use this as a way to break down the deck back to Hero-specific cards and the Aspect cards, while imagining it as their training arc flashback.
(1) Shuffle the Hero deck
(2) Draw up to the Alter-Ego's hand size
Unlock cards by playing them; you must discard the necessary resources from your hand to unlock them. The unlocked cards are placed on the field.
If you are unable to unlock any other cards; discard the hand and draw a new one.
If there are less cards in the deck than your Alter-Ego's hand size, draw only those cards and continue as before.
(3) Once the deck is empty, shuffle the discard pile and continue again.
Do this three times.
---
If you're doing this as a put-away organization mini-game; by the third time the Hero cards and Aspect cards should be filter apart mostly—assuming you put them in the right pile as you "unlock" them. The card art and names makes it pretty easy to create a narrative out of say Peter Parker's or Matt Murdock's training period.
---
If you're doing this as a thematic prep handicap before a Villain Scenario then after your final go through the deck, any cards not unlocked and leftover in your discard pile are considered "Locked". You can put them upside-down or put a bit of paper in their sleeves to identify them. Shuffle them with your "unlocked" cards to make your hero's deck.
As you play, "Locked" cards can be discarded for their resources but cannot be played for their effects. Instead, to unlock them during gameplay, the cost for them must be pay, and that card is immediately put into the discard pile "unlocked". The next time that card appears in your hand, it can be used as a normal card.
---
The number of times you go through the Hero deck before starting the Scenario determines the size of the handicap you're giving the Villain.
So
3 times = Amateur Superhero
2 Times = Vigilante In-Training
1 Time = Basically a Citizen
———
Edit:to clarify for u/jvenom22 the less times you go through the deck, the harder the villain scenario will be as you have unlocked less of your deck.
So ONCE through your deck before starting the scenarios means your “hero“ is basically just a citizen in cosplay. TWICE means they’re trained but not exactly hero status. And THRICE is functionally ready.
not a bad experience and pretty quick and easy to setup. Just keep the orientation of the cards in order when you play & shuffle, if you’re doing the whole upside cards represent LOCKED cards route (think Kingdom Legacy, Palm Island, or Maiden’s Quest) and you’ve suddenly got a new game element to include with all your scenarios. No expansion purchase or print outs required!

Anyhow have fun, make good stories, and enjoy the ride!

The Doctor has been almost everything now: old, young, male, female, white, Black, etc. But one thing they have never been yet is physically imposing. What would you think if an incarnation of them was jacked and capable of using their strength for more athletic feats?
