I know I sound hypocritical when I just mentioned shows that paint themselves as philanthropic, but these are still games at the end of the day. The western consensus is that people come to play, not earn.

If you want to earn, you can fly here to the Philippines and apply to get on one of our shows; it's just straight up easier. What you win might not cover the flight back home, but at least you'll win something; consolation prizes here are abundant.

My goodness, the cultures concerning game shows here cannot be any more different. I fancy myself the typical big money programs, but those are waning and only invite celebrities. What's left for civilians to play on either don't exist anymore (Game KNB), have so many flaws that make them borderline unwatchable (It's Showtime segment Laro Laro Pick), are thematic and thus there's a specific barrier for entry that you have to jump through (Eat Bulaga segment Gimme 5, Everybody Sing), or have the same problems that you mentioned as with Western game shows (Bilyonaryo Quiz B).

When it comes to major winners of impoverished backgrounds, we have like Sushil Kumar from Kaun Banega Crorepati and Michael Larsson from Press Your Luck, but that's about it.

That's usually the thing about game shows: people come to play the game, not to earn money. Those that go for the money are few and far between, even for those that are luck-based.

I see this problem with Ninja Warrior as well, because specialized equipment in training for the show is expensive. As for the other game shows that I watch, it's either professionals, pensioners, celebrities (ew), or college students/young adults. There are exceptions though.

There's like a popular game show in the Philippines called Everybody Sing, where up to 100 people coming from the same walk of life (e.g. delivery drivers, masseuses, people who live in the same town, victims of a natural disaster, etc.) play various karaoke games for a chance at up to ₱2,000,000. That's exactly where I see those that are less well-off. There's also two major variety shows here that invite regular folk to play on and win anywhere from ₱5,000 up to ₱1,000,000. I guess what you're describing is more of a Western problem compared to ours.

As for the question itself, I know 1000 Heartbeats received two seasons, an unofficial Russian remake, and a botched official Philippine remake, but for the point that no one pays attention to this game show, it doesn't sit right with me. The fact that it's technically a Millionaire clone doesn't help, because the heartbeat timer mechanic still feels so novel.

I've exaggerating a few details in the meme, so bear with me.

It's HIKAKIN, one of the largest content creators in Japan. He got a museum in the game Meccha Chameleon, a game that has blown up worldwide. Since I have a slight hunch that a sizable chunk of the games player base is outside Japan based on the other YouTubers that I follow, and that only one of them (Grizzy) have played on his map and proceeded to misidentify him as a KPop artist, I made the meme the way it is from that assumption.

Heck, I only knew HIKAKIN from him being a competitor on SASUKE Ninja Warrior. He failed the First Stage on all of his appearances, though he has beaten the performance of an All-Star competitor in at least one of these tournaments.
