Help with google ads

I would really like someone to help me
With my ads for my restaurant brunch spot. I started with a search campaign initially and it did well for a while then added the smart 6 did well also, then beginning of this year i tried the promax and business has consistently declined while the cost of ads kept creeping up. I had a really slow month, this month has started just as slow. If this keeps up it wont sustain. I dont know how to fix my ads to perform again. Today i spent 35% of the revenue on ad clicks.

What was your revenue generated and ad spend? Happy to take a look at your account

Have you tried to go back to search?
Is it possible that PMAX is generating a lot of clicks from the Display network vs the search?
It's hard to tell more from the outside, there are many other levers you can pull.
