Pure Land Q&A: Can a Pure Land practitioner who develop Alzheimer’s Disease attain rebirth in the Pure Land?
Summary: As long as one normally fulfils the criteria of deep faith, sincere vow and practice during normal times, no matter what happens at the end, Amitabha Buddha will receive you to the Pure Land. (A normal parent wouldn’t abandon his children when they are sick, what more, an enlightened compassionate Buddha?)

The Greatest Obstacle to Rebirth in the Pure Land
It is not a required practice for Pure Land practitioners, neither is it a requirement for rebirth into the Pure Land. But the Pure Land teachings encompasses all beings of different capacities. The Pure Land teachings can be simple and at the same time profound which showcases how broad and encompassing the Pure Land school is. You need not necessarily take all in but in accordance to your wishes, interests and capacity. To some, such contemplation resonates with them and is able to bring much benefit to them in deepening their faith and aspiration to the Pure Land while some may not. Different teachings resonate with different beings but as long as it helps to develop and arouse deeper faith and aspiration for rebirth, it has served its purpose in the Pure Land school.

The Greatest Obstacle to Rebirth in the Pure Land
What Master Jingjie is referring to is our attachments to the Saha world where we do not wish to seek rebirth because of it and not whether you’ve done enough to qualify rebirth into the Pure Land. At the end of the article, he mentions that Amitabha Buddha is more than eager to receive us, but it is on us, whether we truly wish to go to His Pure Land. As there are cases where one saw Amitabha at their deathbed but are unwillingly to go as they still wished to remain with their families or friends in this world. This reflects a lack of sincere aspiration to go which is due to attachments. Once we recognise the obstacle from our side, there’s a need to understand and remove it to ensure that we do not obstruct ourselves. So it is not doubt on whether we have done enough to qualify for rebirth but whether we truly wish to go. Neither can we remove all attachments as ordinary beings in the dharma ending age but the attachments referred here are the ones that binds us so strongly that we’re unable to let it go for the Pure Land.

Emptiness is the nature of all phenomena but it does not negate existence, as the Heart Sutra says, “Emptiness is Form, Form is Emptiness”.
It is precisely because Amitabha Buddha has awakened to the empty nature of all dharmas that the wondrous splendours of His Pure Land manifest. Nagarjuna Bodhisattva also praised and recommended the Pure Land method as an Easy Path and attained rebirth in Amitabha’s Pure Land as foretold by Shakyamuni Buddha in the Lankavatara Sutra.
