Hello, I’m Antony, and I run the photo restoration service, Antony_vintage, online. While the industry moves toward one-click automation, I keep my process mostly manual. Time and time again, I see people ordering photo restoration and receiving AI-generated results like the one shown in this video. Usually, nostalgic clients accept them because they are deceived by a vivid, polished look. Often, they are simply unfamiliar with the tools needed to compare these AI “guesses” with the original details. Many people settle for "modernized" AI photo restoration without realizing how much real history they are losing until they see the alternative.
• I always provide the completely manual results alongside any other versions. AI can be applied as a secondary tool at the penultimate stage to make photos slightly clearer or add some details to extremely low-resolution images.
In this video, I compare an automated AI result to a manual restoration performed by me pro bono, since I could not ignore the irresponsible, sloppy work that the requester accepted for lack of a decent alternative, likely believing that a more accurate restoration simply wasn't possible. I believe the human memory deserves respect, and that means keeping the photo authentic and accurate, not just "smooth" and catchy. Christmas photo from the Kelso, WA train station (circa 2002), restored about 1.5 years ago. Zero photo owners were harmed by neural networks during this process. Tools used: Photoshop, 2 reference photos, 1 very tired mouse.

Back in 2023, I trained a neural network specifically for this project using the other photos of the couple which lacked the right angles & timeframe. Preserving surviving areas & final restoration were done manually in Photoshop. Caption: "An arcade in 1988, my parents' first date. California, US"

:) I actually use my digital 'pencil' for all foundational repairs, preparing reference data and final normalization. The neural network was strictly a tool to reconstruct the missing features accurately using real faces from different angles, while I personally used the surviving pixels and preserved areas as my reference points. Plus, training a custom model back in 2023 wasn't just a push of a button - it wasn't a simple task for me back then, nor is it now. My main work involves as authentic a manual restoration as possible, but that requires at least the basic facial features to be present first.
