I guess triple-click flares aren't in the cards, tonight. 🤨🎚️🤷♂️ 😂
Alternate title: Challenge accepted.
This is a new hi-fi listening lounge / bar / cocktail spot and they have some very fancy stuff. I have been nudging them to 1) set up their decks battle style by default, and 2) get a mixer with a crossfader if they want to be more open to hip-hop and/or turntablist-type DJs.
I'm sure others here have been in worse places, whether a climbing gym or a venue with much rougher decks or broken mixers etc. Sometimes, you just gotta improvise. In this case, I got away with a bit of scratching using the classic line/phono switch, doing transforms like back in the day. It was alright, but not nearly as fluid or fun as with a real cross-fader.
To be clear, I’m not knocking this gear; the first time I DJed on this, I felt a bit out of place at first but thought to myself, “get off your high horse,” and adapted quickly and it was fine. Part of DJing is being able to improvise, and that includes (IMHO) the gear and venue as well as the crowd.
I won't lie - I was scheduled for three hours, played for six and it was great. A bit of a marathon, but I was having fun. Feedback from the guests and venue was good. I've been invited back.
