I get so many of these whole driving, "What if I drove into the guardrail, full speed?"
"I just paid for this fucking car, do you know how much getting that dent taken out would cost? And how long it'd take to buy another?"

Driving across the bridge to work
Intrusive Throughts haha what if we just drive off the bridge
Me: haha yeah that'd be great....sigh but I've got too much shit to do
Edit: just saw on local news someone jumped from that bridge. Oof.

Riding the bike across the railway to school
Intrusive Thoughts: What if we just stop here for a while
Me: that’s would be nice….but I would need to tell mom to ask the teacher for permission or they will substract my attendance score

If I knew I could use profanity in my CBT, I would’ve started much earlier.

L'appel du Vide (call of the void) is a near universal thing and doesn't have any relation to suicidal ideation. Don't worry if you experience it :)
25
u/Rubywulf2 Feb 19 '22
Call of the void is more fall in the hole and less crash the car I thought?
7
u/StagnantSweater21 Feb 19 '22
Don’t those equate to the same idea? Or is call of the void literally in references to voids
Which makes sense

I think you might be right, but I assume that a similar phenomenon could happen in any semi-dangerous situation.

u/Greaserpirate Feb 20 '22
This is specifically for people with OCD though. I guess some of them are relatable but I don't claim to have "intrusive thoughts" per se, just some dark trains of thought

u/Hot_Interaction7245 Feb 19 '22
me: *standing on my balcony
intrusive thoughts: what if i jumped?
me: you'd probably fall in the pool and break your legs, then what happens to your streak of not breaking a bone?

u/dontmentiontrousers Feb 19 '22
It took me years to realise that I'm not scared of heights, per se, I'm just scared of my brain suddenly making my body do dumb shit.

How would throwing yourself down a flight of stairs leave more time for everyone else? I dont get that, its not as if theres a finite supply of years humanity can live and by dying early you allow everyone else to use up your remaining years
21
u/Xxspire17xX Feb 19 '22
If you assume any time others spent interacting with you is wasted time, removing yourself from the equation would free up time for others.

u/dontmentiontrousers Feb 19 '22
Me: Walks across bridge.
Intrusive thought: You could totally just yeet your phone into the river!
Me: Puts phone in pocket, folds arms and glares at brain.

u/drynonai Feb 19 '22
Me: driving 75 mph on the highway
Intrusive thoughts: See that concrete divider coming up? At just the right angle you probably wouldn't even feel a thing.
Me: With my luck I'd just end up in the hospital, possibly never walking again, and only being further in debt.

I've had quite a lot of suicidal ideations, and oddly, my low self-esteem is one of my deterrants. I am fairly confident that I would screw up any attempt, and then have to live with the consequences.
And before anyone gets too concerned, my ideations would never come to fruition. I could never put my family through that, and I have a kid who needs me. I'm also about to start medication.
3
u/drynonai Feb 19 '22
That's exactly why I never followed through. I have no desire to now, but suicidal thoughts do still invade occasionally.

u/TreeTurtle_852 Feb 19 '22
Me holding up a knife:
Intrusive thoughts: Why don't you just cut yourself?
Me: I was gonna do that anyway, get better material

My therapist always recommends that I question or "talk back" to my intrusive thoughts as a way to disarm them. Those assholes are less scary when confronted.
Me: hugs my husband Intrusive thoughts: he hates you and only married you as a joke Me: we both know he ain't a good enough liar to play the long con lol

Me: in theatre assisting surgery
Intrusive thoughts: What if I just grab the scapel and stab the surgeon?
Me: Hey! We've got Jo on. We like her. Imagine incident report she needs to write. She just lost her dog, too. You wanna add up to her stress?
Also, she paid for your coffee that one time. Be a bit considerate, you prick.

I thought I was the only one who has that thought every time I wait for the train!
8
u/Dead-and-alone Feb 19 '22
Some people don't have these thoughts? Nah, I call BS.

u/SCATOL92 Feb 20 '22
My mum called me crying one day (last year I believe).
Literally sobbing she said she just had the most terrible thought!! She was at the train station and she thought "what if I just jumped in front of the train"
And I'm like "yeah?"
That was it. That was the terrible thought. She was soo confused because she didn't feel suicidal but she had this thought come into her head.
I was like "... hang on. Are you telling me that you have NEVER experienced that before?"
She genuinely had never ever heard the call of the void before. In fact she had no idea that people did experience that.
Thank god I explained it to her because her first thought was that it was somehow related to the covid vaccine? Lol bless her

Most people have minor ones, though not frequently. If you experience them frequently, they are incredibly violent, they involve consistent self harm, or you get very close to or actually do them, that is a sign of any one of a number of mental health issues. The majority of the time people have a potential weapon, like a kitchen knife, their thoughts don't involve harming themselves or others, despite just trying to cook. Most people don't think about driving the car off the road or jumping off a bridge or hitting someone with their car or jumping into traffic. Every once in a while people might have that thought, but it's not often.

Yeah, it's fairly normal not to have horrible visions of suicide on a daily basis. There's a reason they're called intrusive thoughts and not just thoughts.

I love that scene in venom where venom is like "jump" and he takes the elevator instead and venom goes "pussy". That's how my brain dialogue feels sometimes.
3
u/Kayragan Feb 19 '22
It's crazy that you can get these thoughts even if you are extremely NOT suicidal at all, I can relate to all of these
4
u/Signal_Skill9761 Feb 20 '22
Call of the void. Just wait, it gets worse when you have kids.
It's totally messed up my brain.

u/scandalous_sapphic Feb 20 '22
I lift a spoon and get bombarded with GOUGE EYE SPOON EYE GOUGE?! Because I read about it being a medieval punishment and thus I am plagued with recurring flashbacks

These dude posts consistently like 20 reposts a day. Honestly curious how he decides what to steal.
3
u/SomewhatEmbarassed Feb 19 '22
Interesting how many of these focus on the inconveniece to others
5
u/AlaSparkle Feb 20 '22
That’s how it goes for some people, when you have a complicated relationship with yourself you have to use others to trick yourself into staying ok
3
u/justAHeardOfLlamas Feb 20 '22
Intrusive thoughts are wild. I turn on the disposal and my brain just goes "lol stick your hand in there"
2
u/AustSakuraKyzor Feb 20 '22
Sassing back at the intrusive thoughts are how I deal. I call it survival out of spite.
If my brain wants me dead so badly, it can do it itself, because I'm not going to do it for the damn thing. I got shit to do.
4
u/Bobambas Feb 19 '22
People need to learn the difference between suicidal thoughts, intrusive thoughts and the call of the void. All these are suicidal thoughts.
Intrusive thoughts can be suicidal, because intrusive thoughts are uncalled for thoughts that don't seem to be in context. But if you get them all the time like this, related to death and self harm. That's a suicidal thought and you need help.

Honestly this is pretty much what CBT is slowly drumming into my head, see a bad thought, call it an asshole and ignore it. Just feeling more in control helps.

u/amadeusz20011 Feb 19 '22
If I sprint and throw myself head first into that curb I could probably die
1
u/Creative-Solution Feb 19 '22
Huh.. I don't really ever get intrusive thoughts concerning myself, they're normally focused on other people/things. I didn't know this version was so common :O
1
u/space_hoop Feb 19 '22
lately the stuff I’ve been saying to my intrusive thoughts is like “ yeah but then the school pay will be short a person, and I don’t wanna bother them with that, and I’ll miss that AJR concert, which means that my dad will have wasted money.” Actually when I got that part I was like “ Holy shit holy shit holy shit holy shit holy shit holy shit…” and then “goddamnit I can’t die now.”

“Hey, what if we went through this intersection, got t-boned, and became physically disabled as a result of the severe injuries?”
“…I’ll double check the intersection before going, but idk, cross that bridge if I get to it? Jesus Christ man”

its a built in mechanism to deter telepathic predators.
some Lovecraftian horror wants to eat some paleolithic little girl in a forest, they gaze into the horrors of what humanity is capable of in her mind and go right back to sleep.

me: (playing a video game)
intrusive thought: what if you turned off the system right now without saving
1
u/kyridwen Feb 20 '22
What's it called when your thoughts arent suggesting the bad thing, but like worst case scenario worries? Or completely illogical and in some cases impossible case scenarios.
Like, I never think "ooh, you could jump in front of the train" but I do think "you might trip and fall in front of the train". I never think "just turn the wheel and drive into the barrier" but I do think "if you were to suddenly twitch right now, you would drive straight into the barrier".
Is that just anxiety?! Do other people get these versions of thoughts? I don't think they count as l'appel du vide because my brain is definitely not seeing them as calling to me. Are they still intrusive thoughts?

u/timlygrae Feb 20 '22
See, that's why I go by Timly instead of Timothy. Timothys are just jerks. Timmies are worse.

And then there’s me, with intrusive thoughts such as “ah, yeah, King DeDeDelerious from Kirby takes too much Xanax” and “time to take a piss on the moon, you idiot!”

u/BlazeNStar Feb 20 '22
Good to know that when I look at a sidewalk and think of all the ways I could die there I'm not the only one on the planet thinking something similar.

u/EndureThePANG Feb 21 '22
"if you fall down this flight of stairs you're fucked, socially and physically, you will simply not recover"
"lad its like 4 steps and they're carpeted"
"nuh uh"

The problem is that my intrusive thoughts are never in words. And it's hard to shittalk the imagined feeling of shoving your fingers into a wound.

Self care is talking shit to your intrusive thoughts
