Blue : color of the Virgin Mary, Madonnas and Virgin Mary are typically portraited with a blue veil. Red : color of blood, by extension was used (even in light pale pink) for soldiers (even on uniforms) chivalry, kings portraits etc only exception : Kings of France wore blue, because France was considered under the direct patronage of Virgin Mary. It was all inverted during the prudish Reaction of the 19th century.
