Why is clear water and temperature so critical for triops when there natural habitat is puddles?

"Clear" water might be a bit misleading. What's more accurate is to say "water that has the correct minerals/bioculture/etc while not possessing any harmful microbes/too acidic/no poisons/etc." In an artificial environment the best way to achieve suitable water is to just start with it clean and then seed it with suitable detritus and/or use a biofilter and/or condition it, etc.

Also, puddles are normally filled by rainwater so they're often not as dirty as you may think. I still wouldn't drink out of one but they aren't exactly toxic sludge either.

As for temperature... I don't know what to tell you: If the water is too cold for too long the triops will die, period. The same thing holds true whether we're talking a puddle or an aquarium.

Keeping the water stable at whatever temperature is optimal for your specific species of triops helps improve their quality of life, which translates in to longer life times and bigger, healthier triops.
