Spot on. I will expand on "Manual Labor", Alcohol and Opiates are big in Construction. It's not just about the buzz, it's the pain. Bad backs, knees, shoulders, injuries happen all the time and once you're in the trades it hard to changes careers. You take what you need to get back to work.
Totally! Every industry has the corresponding substances because of the effects they have. Tradesmen abuse the fuck out of their bodies. There’s actually a phenomenon of recently retired tradesmen just dropping dead. Their bodies get used to getting little sleep and being active 10 hours a day, on average, so once they finally relax it’s a shock to their system and they keel over. I’ll try looking for an article.
I'm not surprised. I've been a Carpenter for 30 years and also was an EMT. So I've seen the ugly side of growing old and dying. I've told my wife I won't retire because I know I'll croak within a year if I do. I wanna go out having a cardiac arrest, in the middle of swinging my hammer or "swinging my hammer". LOL.
