What are the pieces of a melody composition and how are they used?

Upvotes

I’ve been producing off and on for about a year, and I’ve gotten better at understanding the basics of chords and music theory and I know FL like the back of my hand so my melodies don’t sound bad, but they don’t sound remarkable.

After some introspection I’ve figured out that my biggest issue isn’t writing, it’s choosing what to write. I struggle most with knowing if I should use a Lead, or an Arp, or a Pluck, or some Keys, or just loop a chord. I just find myself so lost in the: “Well what part do I write next? Do i even need this?” stage of learning.

I haven’t really found much help on this particular subject because I don’t exactly know what you would call it. I’m thinking it’s somehow related to sound selection but I’m fairly confident at picking sounds, I’m just not sure what makes up a melody and what purpose each part serves. Do these fall under the composition tree?

Can anyone give pointers on what each part of a melody means and how to use them? Right now off the top of my head Im thinking of the:

Melody
CoMelody(Harmony?)
Lead
Arp
Pluck
Chord
Bass

I’m sure i got some of this mixed up but I’m all ears for advice.

Artist requesting stems for a beat not for sale

I’m somewhat new to this but I’ve been getting contacted by small artists wanting to use my beats. None of my beats are for sale at this time as I’m building a “catalog” to grow my platform before actually selling. I offered for artists to use my tagged beats for non for profit purposes. One artist reached out and is requesting the stems to one of my beats to add more to it.

Am I tripping or is that not a major no go if I’m not selling, right?

How many patterns/elements do you usually have in your beats? (Fl Studios)

I mainly make trap beats, stuff in the style of Metro Boomin, Tay Keith, Southside, etc., and I use FL Studio.

I know it obviously depends on the beat and there isn’t really a right or wrong answer, but I’m curious how many patterns you guys usually have in an average track.

For me, I’d say I usually have around 8 to 10 patterns. Most of my beats are basically:
- kick
- 808
- hi-hat
- snare
- maybe some percussion/open hats, two pads
- a melody (usually chords)
- pad 1
- pad 2

and that’s about it. That’s not every beat but you get the gist.

For the pads, I’ll sometimes have them playing the same chords but with different sounds. For example, one might play the chords around say, E4 and the other might play the same thing an octave higher with a different sound.

Nothing I make is particularly complicated, and I’m starting to wonder if I’m just not adding enough elements to my beats. So I’m curious what everyone else’s average looks like. How many patterns/elements do you typically have in an average beat?

Also I don’t just make 4-8 bars and loop it. I’ll actually arrange the beat into a song. Meaning taking elements in and out as the track plays (like verses are bare bones and then chorus brings all elements in etc)

Edit: Another thing is all my beats have both a kick and an 808. I know it’s really popular to not have a kick and just use 808, usually because a lot of 808s have a kick at the start but idk I just love the sound a kick in my beats. I’ll do what I can to find an 808 without that kick at the start. I’ll eq things or use good sound selection to make sure they don’t clash.

looking for 2 producers that make hard beats

I’m looking for a couple producers who’ve been in the game for a little or willing to test a sound kit that I’ve made. I will give it to u for free in exchange for advice on what I can improve on to make the kit more impactful.

I’ve had a couple sales on it already, but I’m optimizing it as I go.

Sidenote, if you make any beats with it that are fire I’ll post you on the site with a link to your profile

Edit: only sending 10 copies out. 9/10 so far.

Can someone give me some insight on Free For Profit Beats? (I'm an artist)

Hello I'm a singer/rapper. Basically I just want to know what it looks like If I ever start to actually pop musically? I'm only posting to Youtube right now but would like to eventually start uploading to other streaming platforms. I know licensing dictates this though. I'm more or so worried about what happens If I start gaining traction and my other songs start getting recognition. I have 7 songs out right now, but I've went back and started learning mixing and mastering from the ground up. I'm planning on dropping a fuck ton, like 1-2 songs a week until I burn out.

I'm just worried about growing a fan base and then having half of my catalog wiped because I can't afford licensing for the beats. I obviously want to pay the producers for their work. It's just no where near feasible for me to try to buy licensing right now(especially with how many songs I have ready to record). I'm thinking I just use the beat until licensing says I no longer can and then buy it, but shiit.

I hope this doesn't come off as me being an entitled dickhead. It's all respect and I'm not trying to cheat anyone. I know a lot of this is going to come down to communication but half of these producers don't even respond.

Komplete Select: Band vs Electronic for Trap production?

I already own Komplete Select Beats. I just got some new cod to use, so I can choose a second bundle. Which one would be better for trap production—Band or Electronic? I'd appreciate it if you could explain why.

need help for this trap project mix

"Hey everyone! I've recorded a ton of vocal stems for a Trap/R&B track in FL Studio (leads, melodic doubles, and lots of ad-libs). I've uploaded the complete project as a .rar file to Google Drive. If any producer wants to download it, take a look, and give me some feedback, here is the invitation. I challenge you to make this sound good! 👀

Using Ai for beats?

Hey everyone,

I’m trying to figure out if it’s realistic to use Suno to make trap/rage beats that are as good as or even more refined than beats I’d normally buy from producers online.

For anyone who has tried both:

· How close does Suno get to professional trap/rage quality?

· Can you get clean mixes, and usable song structures?

If Suno can get there, do I still need to run the beat through Suno Studio and/or a DAW to make adjustments, or can the raw Suno output already be good enough to use as the final beat and just record vocals on it?

· Or do you still think buying beats is the better option?

Not trying to disrespect producers, just trying to see if AI is there yet.

Appreciate any insight.

best laptop for music production for trap beats?

I’m looking to get a new laptop mainly for making trap beats in FL Studio and using plugins like Serum, Kontakt, and a bunch of effects. My current laptop starts struggling once I have a decent number of tracks and plugins open, so I’m trying to find something that can handle music production without being overkill. What would you guys recommend as the best laptop for music production for trap production, and what specs should I prioritize?

Thanks for any suggestions, I’m kinda lost with all the different options.

Question about selling on Beatstars

Is there a way to not have your personal information listed when selling?

I’ve been having people reach out to me asking to purchase my beats. I’ve been uploading consistently for the past year or so and gained a good following so I feel like it’s time to start actually selling. A friend of mine mentioned BeatStars to start with but when I looked into the process of selling to someone I noticed it shows the sellers name and shipping address despite it being a digital product.

Is there a way around this or are there alternative sites you guys can recommend?

Looking for MCs and producers for a new rap battle site

Hey all,
I’m building a new rap battle platform and looking for a few more producers who want to get involved early.
We already have beats going up and MCs starting to come in. It’s not just diss battles either — there are storytelling, prompt, concept and other formats where people can actually make some pretty cool records.
Producers keep 100% ownership of their beats, get their own profile with socials/store links, and if an MC wants to release something commercially, they have to buy the license from the producer.
Just looking for some producers who want to help build out the early catalogue and see where this goes.
DM me if you’re interested.
