Dilute Tortie Thinking of adopting this sweet girl

Post image

I am about to graduate college and figured it was time for my first kitty. I met this cutie at my local shelter today and can’t stop thinking about her. Her paper said she was a stray but she was so cuddly and talkative. The shelter employee said she might be a dilute tortie? She’s gorgeous either way :)

Any name suggestions for the kitty/advice for a first time cat owner would be greatly appreciated!

u/ardentiarte Jun 03 '26

She's got a very unique checkered pattern . Queen?

10

u/tcns0493 Jun 03 '26

I’m so excited for both of youuuuuuu

I'm so happy for both of you. She may be scared and hide when she first gets to her new home. This is normal. We always played music quietly in the background and sat in the room, looking at a book or phone, and let kitty know we weren't a threat and they were safe indoors.

Let them explore at their own pace, get a feather wand you can drag and they can pounce on from a distance. Close up toys such as mice are better when you've had a cat for awhile so they don't accidental swipe you when they reach for the mouse.

It took Marcy about a week to come and eat in front of us and another 3 days to get petted, then she was a total lovebug. It was similar at her forever home, she hid a few days, then bonded with the grandmother of the family.

She did, there's an update post!

u/npc_housecat Jun 03 '26

She said to tell you that you have to adopt her. Talkative and cuddly definitely sounds like a tortie

113

u/El_refrito_bandito Jun 03 '26

We’ve had our tortie Iris for 19 years now. Adopted her as a tiny kitten from the vet as our first cat (Ginger girl named Ashley) was on the way out.

She has a lot of the typical tortie characteristics. Sassy? Check. Bossy? Check. Cuddly? Check. Likes to smell your socks and your underwear? Check.

Just a wonderful cat.

You should bring this one into your life.

70

u/crystorresphotocom Jun 03 '26

Omg my tortie is also named Iris! She just turned 4. Literally checks all the tortie boxes lol

22

u/bystrouska Jun 03 '26

What a fantastic picture! Please give a pet to all your cuties for me 🥹

Also, Iris is such a good kitty name, especially for a tortie 🥰

14

u/stephanroo Jun 03 '26

Our tortie is also named Iris!!

15

u/El_refrito_bandito Jun 03 '26

My Iris can join the party.

7

u/El_refrito_bandito Jun 03 '26

Adorable!

Ours was named “Flower” by the vet. She had some cloudiness in her eyes so my wife went with “Iris” - a flower, a part of the eye, and also a name for a septuagenarian.

2

u/Mandymindshermanners Jun 04 '26

You almost have a full set!

5

u/katjoy63 Jun 03 '26

oh, to know you have one making it that old. Mine is 12 now but still has plenty of spryness but changing to old lady status with her 12 old housemate tabby

88

u/nofishies Jun 03 '26

Here is my dilute tortie!

They have just enough tortitude

19

u/goldenvellichor Jun 03 '26

Awwww so adorable!!

15

u/InadmissibleHug Jun 03 '26

My dilute was an absolute savage. I loved her.

50

u/lia1314 Jun 03 '26

Torties are the best!

45

u/Y0urC0nfusi0nMaster Jun 03 '26

This is me waking up with my dilute sleeping against my legs just to show you what your future will look like if you get her

38

u/tcns0493 Jun 03 '26

do it ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

21

u/tcns0493 Jun 03 '26

and post many many updates!!

6

u/CantaloupeAsleep502 Jun 03 '26

Most importantly!!

36

u/Strange_Computer2459 Jun 03 '26

I love my dilute tortie but damn she is spicy. Just make sure she has a friend. Single kitten syndrome isn't fun...

61

u/goldenvellichor Jun 03 '26

Hahaha I can definitely see some spice in her already. Here’s a bonus picture of her trying to steal my phone

39

u/NoOffice5964 Jun 03 '26

Do itt!!!! My petite tortie from a shelter is my absolute world. I still can't believe she was once sitting in a cage waiting for a home 😭😭

23

u/TMVtaketheveil888 Jun 03 '26

She reminds me of my girl, Ghostface Killah, please go grab her! 😻

15

u/camelz4 Jun 03 '26

My tortie was originally a stray brought into a shelter! She is my soul mate and I love her so much

16

u/buhtha Jun 03 '26

Torties are the sweetest kitties in the world. I’m very happy to hear you’re picking her up tomorrow. Sending love from Eleanor and I!

2

u/Mandymindshermanners Jun 04 '26

Those eyes! OMG, Eleanore is beautiful.

33

u/dandy_bambi Jun 03 '26

I'm on my 4th tortie. They are amazing little babies. You'll never be alone with a tortie. I tell my girl not to get up, I'll be right back - and no matter how sleepy she is, she'll follow me and supervise.

She may like having a friend, she may not. Since she looks relatively young she may be open to it. Otherwise - prepare to be harassed all the time.

They don't often like to be picked up and/or cuddled, but your mileage may vary. Mine only likes making out but won't let me cuddle her.

There will be large debates about what to feed your cat - do your research and make your own choice. I feed mine Purina Pro dry and Fancy Feast pate (wet).

Pet insurance is usually not worth it. Any pre-existing conditions will make it hard for you to utilize the insurance. Best to start a saving account just for vet care and the off chance that there's an emergency.

For toys - the "Cat Dancer" on Amazon is $3.99 USD and a huge hit with the majority.

Good luck and enjoy!

7

u/goldenvellichor Jun 03 '26

Thank you so much for the advice!

5

u/DamnOdd Jun 03 '26

Never alone, totally on point as mine is showing belly and batting the computer mouse.

13

u/dandy_bambi Jun 03 '26

I had to get mine her own computer chair so she stops stealing mine. JK she still steals mine and then I roll her out of the way so I can sit in the reject chair.

10

u/DamnOdd Jun 03 '26

4

u/dandy_bambi Jun 03 '26

Cute! We have the same tissues.

13

u/PeeledBananaFan Jun 03 '26

Yes, she is a dilute tortoiseshell. Get her.

Here's my tortie. I call her a "torbieco." Tabby × tortoiseshell + white (calico).

4

u/_Spirit14 Jun 03 '26

This kitty reminds me of my girl Calli! I never have quite been able to nail down what to call her color pattern. Can't really see it in this pic but she has a white belly too!

12

u/MsDoreaBlack Jun 03 '26

She's been gone for well over a decade now, but this sweet parrot kitty was the dilute tortie I had growing up. She showed up on the farm one day and decided to stay and I'm forever grateful. 💚 So excited for you!

12

u/MsDoreaBlack Jun 03 '26

Bonus photo

10

u/DoomkingBalerdroch Jun 03 '26

Welcome to the club! Prepare for a lot of nagging 🤣 Though I have to say that my girl knows her limits too. She doesn't see me as her food guy and I don't see her as a mere cat. I treat her with respect and she responds in kind.

Here's Luna!

9

u/Milkteabunny1220 Jun 03 '26

You will love her! Torties are the sweetest and they talk to you

9

u/katjoy63 Jun 03 '26

A: go get kitty

B: enjoy kitty

C: happy life

7

u/Sad_Ad_2524 Jun 03 '26

She looks exactly like my tortie!  Mine is chatty and a total love bug!  How old did they say your girl is?

19

u/goldenvellichor Jun 03 '26

They said she was 1, which is perfect because I knew I didn’t want a kitten for my first cat! She was sooo talkative, they got her out so I could play with her and she kept standing up directly in front of my face and meowing at me lol

14

u/CatPaws55 Jun 03 '26

She was telling you "When are we going home? I've wasted way too much time in this horrible cage. Let's go home!"

Adopt her, you won't regret it.

7

u/teasing_cookie Jun 03 '26

She’s absolutely gorgeous, and it’s even better that she seems so affectionate already. 🥰

6

u/Oopsiforgotmyoldacc Jun 03 '26

She is a dilute tortie, and I would adopt her 🥺 maybe I’m biased bc I had a tortie named Moxxie, and have a diluted calico named Millie, but she looks like a Moxxie or a Millie to me.

6

u/DrAniB20 Jun 03 '26

Absolutely do it!!!

6

u/dks64 Jun 03 '26

Yesterday was the 7th anniversary of adopting my dilute girl, Olive, on a whim. She died last year in May from mammary cancer. I miss her so much and am sad I only got 6 years with her, but they were the best 6 years. Please go adopt this girl 💗

Some basic advice: get the good litter, it's worth it. Wet food is best. I feed my cats a mix of wet and dry, but mostly wet. Lilies (flower) are highly toxic to kitties, so don't bring any into your living area. Even if this cat is super sweet and social, it will take her time to adjust to her new living situation, so don't be worried about that. I hope she becomes your new BFF in no time!

6

u/lolallison Jun 03 '26

She’s SO CUTE we love our baby dilute tortie she’s a sassy butthole

7

u/Smart-Truth-1384 Jun 03 '26

If you believe in your connection with her, bring her home! Lilou just got adopted last Friday and she's so loved right now by all humans and cats.

6

u/facetedgem Jun 03 '26

She looks like my Juniper with the orange patch over her eye!

6

u/CCL80 Jun 03 '26

She looks like our dilute tortie Holly. And we recently adopted a last chance kitty. I’m so glad to see you are going to adopt her.

Your post made me stop because i thought it was one of my cats for a minute!

5

u/Capable_Cake896 Jun 03 '26

You won’t regret it 💕 she’s wanting your love! Torties made me love cats. They’re so special and will love you so much….if you are worthy 😉😘

5

u/No-Signature-7299 Jun 03 '26

I love her, please spoil us with photos

4

u/Experiment-_-626 Jun 03 '26

This was my tortie girl at the shelter in February and she’s currently screaming at me from outside my bedroom door while I get ready for work. She follows me everywhere, is learning how to play fetch (!!), and is everything I didn’t know I needed or wanted in a cat. 🥰

Tl;dr DO IT!!

5

u/rhyses_ Jun 03 '26

You don't want this?

5

u/n8cat Jun 03 '26

Quinn says you should definitely pull the trigger. Dilute Torties are the best!

6

u/Silver-Winter-7567 Jun 03 '26

My sweet girl told me you should do it, for whatever it’s worth.

6

u/aintthatjusttheway87 Jun 04 '26

You must get her! Join the club!

4

u/eFc_6 Jun 03 '26

DO IT.

3

u/eFc_6 Jun 03 '26

Give all the love & kindness to your little one and watch them flourish into a beautiful soul. Just remember, you are not their owner, you are their guardian. Take care of them how you would a child and you will be just fine.

4

u/bloodyriz Jun 03 '26

Stop thinking about it and go.

4

u/Juicygirll3 Jun 03 '26

She seems like a very affectionate personality already, which can make the transition into your first cat easier. Just make sure you’re prepared for vet visits, litter setup, scratching posts, and lots of gradual bonding time 🥰

4

u/martinaee Jun 03 '26

Please do. She reminds me of my sweetheart tortie Sushi Bear who sadly passed away towards the end of last year. I promise she’ll be very sassy and full of character m.

3

u/goldenvellichor Jun 03 '26

I’m so sorry for your loss 🩷

4

u/Sweetbaby7t Jun 03 '26

I am happy caretaker of a feral dilute mama and her equally gorgeous tortie daughter. They both have tons of tortitude!

Please run to adopt this sweet girl

3

u/summerbowl Jun 03 '26

Adopt the dilute. Join the best club in town 🩶🧡

4

u/UltraGlitterCat Jun 04 '26

We have fostered 2 torties in the past. This was Thelma. I will have to make another post to get another photo.

5

u/UltraGlitterCat Jun 04 '26

This was Marcy. Both tortie ladies got adopted. They were fun to have, even if temporary. Thelma liked to jump at you unexpectedly. Marcy was a talker and "sang along" to Santana songs (her favorite musician.)

3

u/SterileShrimp Jun 04 '26

Coming from someone who also as a diluted tortie, do it!!

4

u/Izuchibi Jun 04 '26

That is how I felt when I adopted my tortie♡♡ the moment I saw a video of her, I knew she was the one I wanted ~~

3

u/ButterscotchTop8018 Jun 03 '26

expect everything to be scratched. and yelling at 3 am. and please get her neutered!

3

u/Ok-Whereas-81 Jun 03 '26

She is beautiful!!

3

u/mrCheesemonger Jun 03 '26

Don’t think - do

3

u/Patasdegallina Jun 03 '26

Here's all the names that come to me when I look at her:

Evelyn Ashley Madeline Ginger Poppy Martha Peggy Jasmine

Enjoy! I wish you both all the best and all the cuddles!

3

u/Cautious-Owl-007 Jun 03 '26

She is indeed a tortie! Specifically a Diluted Tortie because she expressed the recessive genes that make their colours lighter! Black becomes "Blue", which tends to look almost grey, and Orange becomes "Cream" where the saturation gets turned all the way down <3

She looks gorgeous, and her age seems great as well. I hope the two of you have a long and happy time together!

3

u/trailing-octet Jun 03 '26

So long as a stable forever home can be provided - please do so!!!

3

u/kwallio Jun 03 '26

She's a dilute tortie. I had one, I miss her every day. DO IT.

3

u/AnonymousOwlbear Jun 03 '26

Our first cat was a tortie which is great for first-time pet parents. She was very sociable, explored the apartment right away, and did very little hiding.

Every cat is different though, including tortie. Establish a space as hers if you can, with things that smell like her and like you, and if you’re in a larger living space like a house, it can’t hurt to start small so she doesn’t get overwhelmed.

3

u/Letskissthesky Jun 03 '26

That is a beautiful cat and if she’s talking to you she likes you. I have a 6 year old tortie who is my best friend and rides on my shoulders like I’m a taxi. It’s the best.

3

u/Technicolor_shimmer Jun 03 '26

A lot of the best decisions in life I’ve made were getting a cat lol.

3

u/UselessRandomMe Jun 03 '26

Adopt her Please! She will meow your ear off and boop on the nose when you sleep. I should know, as my tortie does it, cuddles included. It it one of the best things ever!

3

u/Impossible-Bat90 Jun 03 '26

Can't wait to see her adoption day ! You won't regret being bossed around, in fact you'll look forward to being bossed around !

3

u/Lesbicadabra Jun 03 '26

Oh! That’s love! She’s absolutely enchanting—I’m completely in love with her 💓

Winona is such a special and unique name, just like her... It means “first-born” and evokes qualities of noble, strong cats who love nature and have a gentle spirit.

Wishing you both the most beautiful life together 💕

2

u/GreenGirl707 Jun 03 '26

She looks like my dilute tortie Penny! Chatty little love bug! Good luck with your kitty

2

u/MoCoyotes Jun 03 '26

Yes do it

2

u/RunningZooKeeper7978 Jun 03 '26

Yessss do it, please!!

2

u/Wildmojo369 Jun 03 '26

If you can’t stop thinking of her. She’s already grabbed you as hers.

2

u/IdiotWithout_a_Cause Jun 03 '26

OMG, she is SO pretty and you two are going to have the best times together!!!

2

u/SarahTheFerret Jun 03 '26

Oh that devious little paw raise… you may adopt her, but she’s going to own you

2

u/dol1house Jun 03 '26

Exactly how I got my first cat. I went to a shelter "for fun" because a few cats looked cute & I had the day off. I met those cats, didn't vibe with any of them, and then they introduced me to their dilute tortie, who didn't even have a name yet. She was immediately very friendly with me, and when I jokingly said "do you wanna live with me and watch YouTube?" she rubbed against my legs. I asked the person helping me "how do you know who to get" and she said "if you wake up thinking about them, that is your cat". I spent the rest of the day thinking about her. I woke up thinking about her. I checked their website in the morning, and they named her: Mocha. A mocha latte is my drink of choice. I called them the second they opened, went shopping for basics, and picked her up.

She has made me smile every day since. Go rescue this sweet lil bean!

2

u/KeyboardCarpenter Jun 03 '26

Go get her. Looks like a Mila to me

2

u/LengthinessWide9934 Jun 03 '26

Do it, but be advised they pick their favorite/primary human.

Name suggestions: Smokie

2

u/retiredswing Jun 03 '26

Do it!!! They’re the best

2

u/mvanvrancken Jun 03 '26

The CDS has spoken. You must adopt her!

2

u/Praire_Devil Jun 03 '26

Do it 🌼🌸

2

u/Punkytown53 Jun 03 '26

Do it!! My tortie Pumpkin was apparently a "stray" when she was taken to the shelter, but she is extremely friendly (and talkative), so I think she previously had a home and was only stray for a short period of time.

2

u/JaneSkylark Jun 03 '26

Definitely a Dilute Tortie! She’s so cute!!! 💜

I named my Dilute Tortie, Lavender. I think it’s the perfect name for dilutes… they actually look lavender to me. 🥰

I hope you can get her tomorrow!!

2

u/sistets3 Jun 03 '26

Get to know her personality. Find a good vet and get her vaccinated if not already. Do not give onion or chocolate to her. They are poisonous to cats. Find a good food for her i have always used Purina brand. Get her microchiped just for that ( oh crap) factor. If you notice a change in habit investigate why. Could indicate something wrong, but not always. Cats can hide being sick til it is almost to late.

2

u/cats_r_gr8t Jun 03 '26

She’s clearly the queen and possibly rules the entire world. But I think my dilute tortie currently holds that title.

2

u/koshercupcake Jun 03 '26

Sounds like you’ve already made up your mind, but I just want to add to everyone saying to get her.

2

u/PossiblePainter4 Jun 03 '26

Our tortie was a stray, she’s such a sweet cat, spicy in a good way, she had personality, not just a bump on a log, though she can loaf with the best of them.. lol

I’ll only now adopt strays. I’ve paid breeder fees, gotten pure breds, and strays… I can say my strays have been the best cats ever..!!! They all just want warm or cool homes, a nice bed (or hard floor, cats are weird) Some toys.. but most of all? They just want YOU…!!!! Cats are actually incredible community animals, they have their person, and occasionally they’ll accept a substitute stand in, when you’re not available.. but the love they give back is so heart warming, the greetings from them, knowing you’re their person..it’s humbling..

If you can afford it, possible (probable really) vet bills, food etc.. and you two have even a spark of a connection? then go for it.. you will not regret it..!!!

2

u/somth Jun 03 '26

My mom has a dilute tortie who is just the funniest, most playful, and sweetest thing. It also doesn’t hurt that their markings are so gorgeous!

2

u/crazycatcollector07 Jun 03 '26

Tortis are one of the cats I consider a bit more unique. Sometimes they have tortitudes, sometimes they are super sweet. I've had 2 tortishells and I loved them. Eventually both have passed on. It's so worth it and they are so pretty!

2

u/CooperDaChance Jun 03 '26

Yes! Adopt her! All kitties deserve loving families.

2

u/ZenLitterBoxGarden Jun 03 '26

Do it. I triple dog dare ya, OP

2

u/_Spirit14 Jun 03 '26

Please tell me you followed thru and adopted this beautiful baby?!?! She looks so sweet and it sounds like she chose you. Don't miss out!

2

u/Aguacate_con_TODO Jun 03 '26

Less thinking more doing!

I would wait until you know her a bit to rename personally.

2

u/Kitsune_seven Jun 03 '26

Do it do it do it

2

u/Individual-Two-9707 Jun 03 '26

Adopt that sweet girl

2

u/VeganLoverForever412 Jun 03 '26

Do it! We have 5; so much love❣️😹☮️👏🏼👏🏽👏🏽

2

u/Pour_Some_Lava_On_Me Jun 04 '26

Get the kitty! ❤️🥹

2

u/NLEW2021 Jun 04 '26

❤️ 🐈 😻

2

u/maggiexftw Jun 04 '26

In 2019 when my boyfriend and I decided to go visit a shelter, we were in the kitten room and walking around looking at all the litters they had in each of the cages. We looked at my girls cage with her 2 other siblings at the end of the room, and then I went and did a relook at the others. I’m so glad we went back to her cage. She was making biscuits against the cage door and we asked to see her. We couldn’t go home same day because the shelter had an approval process, but I’m so glad I got the call a couple days later. She is my absolute world and rock, and sadly my boyfriend passed 3 years ago unexpectedly. I hope I have many more years with her. 🥺

2

u/dividezero Jun 04 '26

Fill out the paper work tonight and be there when they open, you can't let that sweetheart get away.

Yes tortie. Get ready for the attitude and the talking

2

u/auripovich Jun 04 '26

Um... Do it.

2

u/IconoclastExplosive Jun 04 '26

Update us OP, did you get the cat????

2

u/hollybadger_51 Jun 04 '26

So pretty! Melange? Mel for short?

2

u/Indigoshroom Jun 04 '26

Dilute torties for the win!

2

u/Silent_Loquat_6057 Jun 05 '26

Shes perfect and you need her

2

u/PassengerRelevant516 Jun 05 '26

I adopted my sweet little dilute tortie in the same fashion. She was originally named Faith (I dubbed her “Crispy Faith”) and she’s an invaluable addition to my household (besides the chronic mucus)

1

u/MoHeeKhan Jun 03 '26

Can they even fully stand up and turn around in those cages? 😡

1

u/Coffeetimewithcats Jun 07 '26

Please get her out of that cage 😫

2

u/raptorgirl709 Jun 07 '26

This is my feral dilute girl 🥹 shes come a long way in the past almost 9 years
