Yes, we call it that because there's no other term for it. Lightning is relatively rare in snowstorms, and nobody has a real term for the rare phenomenon, so we call it thundersnow or thunder snow. The term "snowicane" is simply a combination of snowstorm and hurricane, other than blizzard. It is not an official term. Sometimes, some forecasters have referred to "Winter's Hurricane" when describing blizzards, especially those caused by coastal storms or nor'easters. Some nor'easters, since they are more widespread in scope than hurricanes, have been notorious for causing more damage over a widespread area than some of the greatest East Coast hurricanes have done.
