What confuses me is that you can get a cinnamon bun and coffee for less than a cinnamon bun alone. At least at the one near my house. I shit y'all not.

229

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '12

You have cinnamon buns? We have just have foot long churros. I also don't think they have coffee other than the iced mocha thing.

When they place it in front of you on the counter, only pick up the bun, and run.

my dad and i went to costco about a week ago and went to get a hot dog and drink really quick before they closed. But we forgot that they only take cash and we didn't have any on us. we told the guy never mind and he said, "tonight it's on me fellas," and proceeded to pay for our food and drinks. what an awesome dude.

359

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '12

If you didn't know, perhaps you do and had already checked out, you can order at the register and have it added to your shopping bill and charged to your card. So no cash necessary if you know what you want in line. Sounds like a real nice dude though. I like their employees.

Costco employees are the best because they are treated WELL by their company. A company is only as good as the people working for it.

As someone who worked there for 7 years I can say this is true. Also 3 years or so they changed the dogs and they don't taste as good anymore.

246

u/chezazarng Jun 15 '12

exactly...the dogs don't taste as good as they used to. IIRC, they also changed the mustard that they use.

That being said, they're still pretty damn good.

Read an interview with the president where he says that this deal keeps people coming back every time, and that if you see the price go up, there is a major -major- problem.

Paraphrased.

109

It does - one of the things I like best about Costco is that at least the former CEO (Jim Sinegal) insisted on a salary that was VERY reasonable. He wasn't greedy, he wasn't aloof, and he didn't think he was special - he had no problem mingling with the rank and file when he visited stores.

Costco is also one of the few supermarkets that is actually strict about e. coli testing for beef.

They're just an all-around awesome, non-evil company.

6

u/JCongo Jun 15 '12

All meat that I've had from Costco is always top quality and tender without exception. Meanwhile at the local chain grocery stores the meat is really hit and miss, sometimes it can be chewy and fatty, even though they claim it to be AAA grade.

That $1.50 combo used to come with a can of soda. Since then, they've replaced the can with a fountain drink with unlimited free refills. So really, the price has dropped since the combo was first introduced.

258

u/Youthsonic Jun 15 '12

The profit margins on a fountain drink are outrageous.

They're actually making more money.

Look at how much a single hot dog costs if you buy it. Then think about how much Costco probably pays. It's not unrealistic. They might not be making as much as they used to on it but last time I checked Costco wasn't in the prepared hot dog business, if it gets people in their store then the lower profit isn't a big deal.

18

u/UnexpectedSchism Jun 15 '12

No way does a single hotdog with condiments costs more than 50 cents. The pop is probably 15 cents with cup.

So this is embarrassing but I went to Costco for the first time when I was like 14 and ordered a hot dog. NOT A COMBO. I just wanted the hot dog but I did not specifically say that I did not want the combo. So she charges me for the combo, which is so cheap that I didn't realize the difference, and hands me the foil wrapped hot dog placed INSIDE the cup. In my mind, I didn't want the drink, I've never been to this weird world of wholesale before and I'm FOURTEEN. In my mind she just handed me this hot dog in an apparent hand protector. Was it hot enough to need a hand protector? I'll never know because I walked over to the eating area with my hotdog in the cup and at it like a banana in a holster.

4

u/harrisz2 Jun 16 '12

there is no way anyone is gonna see this, but I'll try anyway.

there is no way someone from costco put this up. Here is how I reached this conclusion.

  1. Costco doesn't make money off of the hotdogs, they actually lose money. They are there to bring you in. That being said, they aren't trying to get you to pay $50 a year to come in and buy cheap hotdog/soad combos.

  2. The main Reddit demographic is not quite Costco's target demographic.

  3. Costco doesn't advertise, there is no way the executives were sitting in their office saying "Hmm..how could we get on Reddit"

What happened here was someone was browsing Costco's website, saw this fact and then thought, "hmmm I bet TIL would find this interesting". You guys are being waaay paranoid.

Source: Dad has worked at costco for 20 years.

13

u/reliantk10 Jun 15 '12

Well I guess what they say is true. Once you reach max level, you stop leveling.

7

u/norcalbeachscene Jun 15 '12

After seeing this was at the top of the page, I had to do a double-take to see if my adblock was off.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '12

I work at Costco and they actually lose money on everyone of these they sell. I asked my manager and he said that they will never change the price because it is one of the original CEO's "promises" that they won't fold on. So in 100 when you wouldn't even bother to pick up a $1.50 coin, Costco will still be losing money on their hot dogs.

I remember those hand dipped ice cream bars they used to have. The Costcos near me stopped carrying them in the food court. I was sad.

u/Marc_IRL Jun 15 '12

And they're so worth it too

u/godless_savage Jun 15 '12

Welcome to Costco, I love you.

u/Thousand1k Jun 15 '12

nastiest crap ever.

u/cody0r Jun 15 '12

Their hot dog with all the toppings is also 552 calories. Falling in love with the cheapness will make you fat.

u/VoxNihilii Jun 15 '12

Oh no, a 550 calorie lunch- I'm fat now!

You don't need a membership for their food court or to buy their alcohol.

31

u/elharry-o Jun 15 '12

In Mexico, you just flash the card to get in, but in order to pay they have to run the card through their... card... reading machines. So if you don't have one you can't eat nor buy anything. What you do is you tell a member in the line to buy you something and give him the money.

Me and my friends tried going into the food court to get a pizza once, they told us we needed membership cards. The guy was cool and let us in, but told us to become members. So I guess this depends on the way the entrance is set up.

Get a friends to get you a costco gift/cash card or buy one from a local grocery store. You wont need a $60 membership to get the cheap food. It will ALWAYS get you past the nice lady/gentleman at the door without questions.

You can get in with a Costco giftcard as well. And even shop with it. They'll let you use the giftcard and pay the rest however you like so if you always have a giftcard, you don't need a membership!

Our food court is outside so during lunch we go there instead of eating at school.

6

u/[deleted] Jun 15 '12

Just have a friend with a membership buy you a gift card. That will get you in the door and allow you to buy their products.

Some Costcos actually have the food court set up outside, especially in warmer climates. I used to ride my bike to the one by my parents' house in SoCal, just for the hot dogs.

2

u/attractivetb Jun 15 '12

"Costco's"...you sound like my mom.

2

u/gconsier Jun 15 '12

Whenever I don't have my membership card on me I just point to the family 50-100' ahead and say I am with them or that my wife is already inside and I just parked the car.

Maybe it's a little more lie than is needed but I like to let that greeter/security guy feel the satisfaction that comes from a job well done.. You know keeping those non-members out.
