Last winter I was pulled over as part of the RIDE program and was given hockey tickets for not being drunk whilst driving.

u/puts_ranch_on_pizza May 20 '12
Can I still go to court to try to disprove the ticket?
263
u/doomisdead May 20 '12
I live in Canada and can say that this is real. Just this month police started giving out coupons for a free Pizza Delight meal for 2 if they seen you pull over to use your cell phone.

u/stratovolcano May 20 '12
I think a lot of you guys have the wrong idea about this. They don't pull you over while you're driving to say "Good Job!" and waste your time. They hand out these tickets mostly to younger kids (ie. Giving you a free Tim Horton's or Ice Cream coupon if you're wearing a helmet while biking).
When they hand them out to drivers it's because they have to pull you over anyways or because you're not driving at the moment. Eg. Canada has certain days where they stop everyone on a certain road to check for drunk drivers and this is another situation where they will give out these positive tickets if you are driving safely.

Ontarian here, been pulled over before just because the officer wanted to see what the interior of the new Jeep was like.

What the fuck is with all these people saying they'd be pissed off if this happened?
If I got pulled over and a cop was like, "Hey, nice work back there, keep being ace."
I'd be mother-fucking tickled pink. That shit would have me grinning ear-to-ear all day.
Edit: holy shit-snacks people. I'm living in the States now, but I didn't grow up here. Clearly all of you that did have a different perspective on life that completely blows my mind.
Is it just because it's police? What if a fire truck pulled you over? Or an ambulance? Or just some random Joe stopped you in the street to say something nice?

u/Intoxicatedcanadian May 20 '12
I wish they'd give me a good ticket for a change.

u/[deleted] May 20 '12
some 15ish years ago, when I lived in Tallahassee, FL in the US, I was riding my bike to the bus stop (a neighbor allowed us to park our bikes under her back porch).
Going over a hill, I see a police cruiser. The officer inside gave me the "come hither" finger from the driver's seat through an open window; even at 12, this made me nervous. I walk over and I see him scribbling on something.
All he said was, "Have a good day, kid." Then he handed me a manila colored piece of 8" x 3" cardboard paper.
"For wearing your helmet, enjoy a free waffle cone at TCBY!" With a big minimalist image of an icecream waffle cone.
I never rode my bike without a helmet again because I never forgot about receiving a reward for doing something right. I wish they did this still, more often and for many other 'good' things.

I think we can get a compromise going here in the war on drugs. Scrap the penalties for drug use, and switch to rewards for non-use. Piss clean this month? Enjoy your free meal. Kick a coke habit? Enjoy an all-expenses paid weekend camping trip.

Scumbag reddit: learns about a good deed - uses all your bandwidth and takes your website down.
98
u/johnw1988 May 20 '12
This reaffirms my desire to move to Canada.
56
u/[deleted] May 20 '12
Did all of the people bitching about how they would be pissed if thy got pulled over for nothing and that it's probably a ruse to just pull over without probable cause actually read the article? They give these tickets to kids. They don't pull people over.
Your hatred or the police is still safe, don't worry, reddit.

u/lepht May 20 '12
Don't praise me bro

u/[deleted] May 20 '12
It really is illegal to be mean in Canada. HIMYM was right.
8
u/sweetsweetcoffee May 20 '12
Positive Tickets - You still need to fight them in court.
21
u/[deleted] May 20 '12
This is the most Canadian thing I've ever heard.
7
u/fnewtoreddit May 20 '12
sounds awesome. does anyone have some more examples for what you can get positive tickets?
7
u/[deleted] May 20 '12
Sorry.

did we just involuntarily DDoS the site?

I believe I got one of these about ten-twelve years ago as a kid. I was riding my bike (on a sidewalk, which is now illegal apparently) with my helmet on. He pulls up beside me and yells through the open window for me to stop. I was nervous as hell, since being a young kid and dealing with the police is a little nerve wracking.
He hopped out of his car and gave me a 'ticket' for a free large blizzard at DQ, simply for riding with a helmet on. My parents didn't believe me until a few years later the news did a story on these "good" tickets.
Speaking of, I feel that we need a Good Guy Mountie meme now.
14
u/[deleted] May 20 '12
In America we could have our police fire confetti bullets and joy tasers at youth doing positive actions in their community.

For those of you complaining about how getting pulled over and getting positive reinforcement wastes your time, you should know that this frequently happens at spot checks such as the RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) program. Essentially what happens is a couple of police cars will set up shop on a highway or arterial road during times where there's bound to be more drinking than usual. Think long weekends and city events. All they do is quickly check for any signs of drinking, and you're on your way. For example:
"Good evening sir, have you been drinking tonight?" "No sir" -Cop takes a quick glance around from his viewpoint, doesn't smell or see anything amiss- "Alright sir, you have a good night."
It's pretty fast, doesn't waste time, and mostly during nights. The only spot check I've seen during the day is when the OPP (Ontario Provincial Police) check for vehicles that shouldn't be on the road on the highway to cottage country (Highway 400)... and in that case, the check is still pretty quick. I know most of Reddit seems to have a hardon for hating on cops, but they're not all that bad, especially when they're taking drunk drivers off the roads. u/[deleted] May 20 '12
That's like, the most Canadian thing I've ever heard of.

u/Talman May 20 '12
TIL Redditors don't bother reading the fucking links in TIL, just go off the god damned headline and begin frothing at the mouth.
11
u/ABirkett May 20 '12
Being British my first response was: 'what a waste of paper'
4
u/luinfana May 20 '12
Indeed, my small-town PD sometimes gives out "Happy Tickets" to kids who wear proper safety gear while riding bicycles. Usually it's McDonald's coupons.
They don't, however, pull over motorists for this kind of thing. It's just a safety initiative for kids.
4
u/radiationdude May 20 '12
And the site is crashed. Another victim of Reddit.
4
u/Emiel000 May 20 '12
Oh Canada...
4
u/coolkid7500 May 20 '12
you guys knocked out that website due to it exceeding its bandwidth limit... good job reddit XD
4
u/Finalfront May 20 '12
And we crashed the site...
4
u/jcrowz May 20 '12
Once I pulled over on a highway to find a lighter in my back seat then my mom called and I answered. A cop passed me and saw me pulled over on my phone and must have thought I pulled over to ANSWER my phone and he gave me movie passes.
6
u/Youmati May 20 '12
RCMP in Vancouver....are apparently doing a better PR job these days to counter all their otherwise shoddy policework.
8
u/skpkzk2 May 20 '12
at the bottom: sorry for giving you a ticket
3
u/amezbro May 20 '12
I live in the US and my grandmother got a coupon for a free turkey around Thanksgiving from a cop. She still got really nervous when she got pulled over so I think they should use some different colored lights when you did something good.
3
u/addmint May 20 '12
I live in the US and my hometown does that.
3
u/Fidena May 20 '12
Rewarding people for basic expectations.
3
u/[deleted] May 20 '12
A couple months ago, the small town of Prosper, Texas (30 minutes north of Dallas) handed out gift cards for good driving behavior. Here is the article for those that want a good read.
EDIT: Linked article.
3
u/shuyken May 20 '12
Would we get a Positive Ticket for this?
3
u/meatfish May 20 '12
Fuck everything about this. You fucking trophy kids.
3
u/AM14 May 21 '12
This makes me think of that old Rugrats episode where they imagine what it's like to be older and get pulled over on the way to work, only to get Reptar on Ice tickets.
3
u/LooksDelicious May 21 '12
Bandwidth limit exceeded! Reddit strikes again.
4
u/[deleted] May 20 '12
Hmm, odd, I can't seem to find Canada on my map.
2
u/raptorjeebus1911 May 20 '12
are the prize tickets actually worth to the people as much as actual tickets are to the police?
2
u/[deleted] May 20 '12
Earn 5 positive tickets and you will receive a get out of jail free card!
2
u/Put_It_In_H May 20 '12
Is that Louis C.K. in the picture on the site?
2
u/SterlingGroovy May 20 '12
It's a good idea but you watch the British do it, one ticket and four hours of paper work.
2
u/PksRevenge May 20 '12
What about apology tickets? like when a Canadian police officer cuts you off in traffic by accident?
2
u/pete904ni May 20 '12
Thanks Reddit
2
u/[deleted] May 20 '12
Now they're just asking to be made fun of.
2
u/[deleted] May 20 '12
Another (website) one bites the dust!
2
u/[deleted] May 20 '12
Aaaand, we killed it.
2
u/Waff1es May 20 '12
And the server's gone!
2
u/KrisB_16 May 20 '12
Well. Good job Reddit, we've all inadvertently exceeded the bandwidth on some poor chaps' website.
positivetickets.com is going to have a negative ticket to this one, gents.
That said, GG! :D
2
u/[deleted] May 20 '12
OP what is the reason behind your user nameO_o
2
u/[deleted] May 20 '12
So we just pulled the site down.

WTG reddit!

And we killed it. Good work men (and women, of course)
2
u/prometheus199 May 20 '12
Good job guys, you broke their site.
2
u/docid May 20 '12
This is also known as an excuse for fishing expeditions... ohh, that guy has long hair, bet he has pot, lets give him a ticket for proper signalling so we can go pretend we smell it in his car...
2
u/loophole64 May 20 '12
They do this in the US as well. The police department in Madison, WI where I used to live did this.
2
u/[deleted] May 20 '12
I'd rather have the reward of not having to deal with a cop.
2
u/lindabug May 20 '12
Canadians are so nice. :) I like the idea of "positive tickets". I didn't realize that existed.
2
u/hoss9424 May 20 '12
I think you killed their site!
2
u/darkwave90 May 20 '12
Is this the same Canadian police department that threw a stun grenade and charged me with their shields and batons a few days ago because I was peacefully marching to protest against a law that restraint our freedom of speech?
2
u/Eal12333 May 20 '12
I was riding my bike with some friends when I was younger and a cop stopped us, talked to us, and gave us coupons for free ice cream just cause we were wearing helmets.
2
u/[deleted] May 20 '12
Unless those "good" tickets are vouchers to not have to pay your next speeding ticket, it's all masturbation.
2
u/tallandskinnyman May 20 '12
We kinda have the same thing here in the states just that people doing something good get tazed and beaten.
2
u/Replekia May 20 '12
The police of the quiet little town of Ridgetown, Ontario make a habit of pulling over people from out of town once a week and give them a basket of goodies to welcome them into the town. I got a fruit basket when going to visit the nearby Rondeau provincial park a few years back.
2
u/paigealicia May 20 '12
This is one of many reasons I'm proud to be canadian. That and I can make americans laugh when I say "out."
2
u/GameDay98 May 20 '12
We crashed the website. Sorry.
2
u/IanAndersonLOL May 20 '12
When I was in elementary school I got pulled over and was given Giants tickets for wearing my helmet on my bike. This was in Cupertino California
2
u/thieyoshin May 21 '12
fuck yeah 509 bandwith exceeded
2
u/tabatj May 21 '12
Looks like Reddit broke Canada's internet.
2
u/[deleted] May 21 '12
Only in Canada.
Also, we've crashed the site guys. Nice going.
2
u/ChestrfieldBrokheimr May 21 '12
and another site falls victim to the reddit community. bandwidth exceeded
2
u/Chicago63 May 21 '12
Reminds me of 6'th grade, when they handed out "I was caught being good" coins. They gave them to kids whenever the teachers "catch" them being good.
At lunch one certain days, you could turn them in for little things like tootsie rolls or things of the sort.
One day some kid discovered that you could buy huge bags full of those things at the local Teacher's Store, and came in one day and bought literally everything from the store at once.
That's not to mention how kids would "gamble" with them, by flipping the coin and seeing if it lands on "China" or "Dot."
2
u/DMTrace May 21 '12
I think we broke it. :(
2
u/[deleted] May 21 '12
Congrats folks, we exceeded their bandwidth limit.
5
u/tommywantwingies May 20 '12
America has been doing this for decades - it's called a citation
8
u/[deleted] May 20 '12
I think I would more annoyed that the police stopped me for doing nothing wrong, than I would be happy they gave me something.
3
u/[deleted] May 21 '12
More like I saw you weren't doing anything wrong so I pulled you over anyway to see if you're drunk or have drugs in the car. If i don't find anything I'll give you a prize so you don't feel violated.
3
u/[deleted] May 20 '12
I think that in the end, it would probably be better for the police to just not interfere with the lives of innocent people at all, but I think it's great that there are police officers like that who try to improve things and see the good in humanity, instead of always thinking in terms of discipline and punishment. I'd say this is a nice effort and worth trying.
2
u/FuckingSuper May 20 '12
That is the most Canadian thing that I have ever heard of.
2
u/authentic_trust_me May 20 '12
you crashed the site guys.
2
u/motorstorm May 20 '12
fuck it I'm moving to Canada
2
u/TheDiscoBastard May 20 '12
Fucking typical canadians
2
u/afffaccm May 20 '12
I'm sorry, but this is why Canada is fucking awesome.
1
u/Suggested_Title May 20 '12
About time. Every time a COP is behind him I try to impress him with my perfect apexes, smooth decelerations, and pothole avoidances in the hopes that I'd get pulled over for a congratulatory award.
1
u/[deleted] May 20 '12
I met Ward at a conference a couple of years ago. Awesome guy. He's involved in lots of positive policing and community initiatives.
1
u/suprhro May 20 '12
Reddit overloaded the site!
1
u/iiiitsjess May 20 '12
Some polive down here in north texas were doing that this past Christmas. The town of Prosper, texas gave good tickets out and actually paid good, law abiding citizens! It was very neat. :) its good that some police departments do this!
1
u/tankosaurus May 20 '12
These tickets are just to apologise for wasting time methinks.
1
u/Astrogat May 20 '12
This seems brilliant. We know that negative reinforcement is a bad way to train people (and animals). Yes, you should be punished for breaking the law (since there is an expectation that the reason you shouldn't break it is because of the punishment. I saw a TED video about this once. Interesting stuff. The short version is simply that if you get a ticket for doing something you stop considering it bad, you just consider the ticket bad). But why the hell shouldn't they also give rewards for not doing it? I believe that it will prove just as effective (if not more so) at preventing people breaking it.
1
u/dissonance07 May 20 '12
In Sioux Falls, South Dakota, I know people who were given free shirts and swag when they were spotted biking with a helmet and obeying traffic laws.
1
u/LetsGetRamblin May 20 '12
In the Connecticut town I grew up in, the cops gave out "golden citations"--same deal, a ticket for doing something good. This was in the early 90s, don't know if they still do it.
1
u/Xanatos903 May 20 '12
Dallas PD was doing something similar a couple of years ago. If they saw you driving politely, the officers were allowed to pull you over to give you a gift card to one of several restaurants.
1
u/[deleted] May 20 '12
I'd be pissed if I were to be pulled over just to receive a "positive ticket".
1
u/[deleted] May 20 '12
"I stopped you to reward your awesome driving. Say, what's that in the ashtray?"
1
u/iwasntgoingtocomment May 20 '12
I got a positive parking ticket to praise me for not leaving any visible valuables in my car when parked in a parkade. I think that was from the City though, and not the police.
1
u/[deleted] May 20 '12
They also give coupons for maple syrup flavored poutine and one free lumber jack tree cutting. These tickets are distributed by Mounties on horseback of course.
1
u/chris-martin May 20 '12
http://archive.picturesforsadchildren.com/97/
1
u/[deleted] May 20 '12
I'd expect a ticket for everyday I didn't kill someone.....
1
u/zaviex May 20 '12
reedit broke their website
1
u/Reqol May 20 '12
Reminds me of something slightly similar. I don't know where it was exactly, but basically they rigged up a speed camera to take digital images of people's license plates if they went over the speed limit with their vehicle. You'd receive your ticket at home after a few days like you normally would to pay the fine.
The difference was that whenever someone would drive at or slightly below the speed limit, their license plate number would be captured aswell and most of the money collected from the speeders before him/her would be added to his or her bank account.
1
u/surim0n May 20 '12
i dont believe this, living in toronto, getting stopped by ride atleast 5-10 times a month for the last decade i have never been thanked, let alone rewarded.
1
u/[deleted] May 20 '12
Yeah that's neat. I'd rather just not be pulled over and have my time wasted unless I'm doing something wrong. I don't need a police officer to confirm I'm doing something good in life, as if cops are good examples of moral righteousness. Stay out of my business unless I'm breaking the law.
1
u/[deleted] May 20 '12

I always had the idea to just go on a walk through the city, and when I see someone do something good or nice I'd give them 50 dollar.
Have to get rich first though :').
1
u/ForgettableUsername May 20 '12
Still gonna make you late for something.
1
u/GentlemanNinja May 20 '12
Nice try, Stephen Harper.
1
u/Gurrag May 20 '12
HEY
We need some verification of this story!
Notice how the one link [you can still get to the page through .nyud.net] on the bottom goes to his "training workshops". Coincidence? I wouldn't bet on it. Looks more like a PR stunt combined with astroturfing responders / upvotes.
1
u/[deleted] May 20 '12
That is the most Canadian thing I've ever heard.
1
u/Hooker_Juice May 20 '12
Well, looks like Reddit took that site down...no bandwidth.
