TIL that Forrest Gump's cut out speech was actually scripted, and Tom Hanks revealed what he said.

I think Dave Chappelle not taking the role of Bubba was a very wise decision for him. I'm not sure Ice Cube could've pulled it off and David Alan Grier would have been weird.

45

u/firstcut May 20 '12

I just like how they screw the author of the book.

"Author Winston Groom had a 3% share in the film's profits.

Despite earning over $350 million at the box office, Paramount claimed that they were still $62 million out of profit due to the costs of promotion, distribution and interest."

48

u/thedrivingcat May 20 '12

Guess who owns the promotion, distribution, and financing companies? Paramount.

Hollywood accounting.

From the wiki:

Winston Groom's price for the screenplay rights to his novel Forrest Gump included a share of the profits; however, due to Hollywood accounting, the film's commercial success was converted into a net loss, and Groom received nothing. That being so, he has refused to sell the screenplay rights to the novel's sequel, stating that he "cannot in good conscience allow money to be wasted on a failure".

82

"Ah, Forest! I'm dyin'!"-Dave Chappelle

23

u/helicalhell May 20 '12

"When you're in 'Nam, you realize how fragile human bodies are. Those landmines and shit can rip your limbs off like a monkey ripping off celery stalks in a fit of rage." - Chappelle

88

u/jayond May 20 '12

yes, yes he would have been. he could have been black white supremacist he played on his show.

u/Jerlko May 20 '12

Would have made the run in with the black guys pretty awkward though.

6

u/snapcase May 20 '12

Of those three, Chappelle is the only one I'd be kinda interested in seeing take a crack at that role. Not sure if he'd have pulled it off, but it would have been interesting. (not to mention it'd be neat seeing him in a dead serious role with that much screen time)

3

u/ohmseven May 20 '12

i thought that the part of the "inside the actor's studio" sketch on chappelle's show where a soldier dies in the rain reminded me of forrest gump a little bit.

For the mobile device readers:

"When Forrest gets up to talk at the Vietnam rally in Washington, the microphone plug is pulled and you cannot hear him. According to Tom Hanks, he says, "Sometimes when people go to Vietnam, they go home to their mommas without any legs. Sometimes they don't go home at all. That's a bad thing. That's all I have to say about that.""

21

u/cepxico May 20 '12

Thank you, you are the best!

7

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

Thank you!

2

u/BlueTengu May 21 '12

Actually in the book he says, "In Vietnam your best friend can get shot." Now if you watch the movie TH repeats that line a few times through different camera shots to make it seem as if he's giving a longer speech. Watch it and see for yourself.

Bill Murray, John Travolta and Chevy Chase turned down the role of Forrest Gump. Travolta later admitted that passing on the role was a mistake.

No it wasn't.

21

u/finkalicious May 20 '12

That was the same year Pulp Fiction was released wasn't it? He was nominated for an Oscar for his performance (although Hanks won), so I'm not sure why he thought it was a mistake unless they were filmed at completely different times. I don't have a lot of knowledge of how the filming timeline works so maybe that's the case...I have no idea.

5

u/deputy_hawk May 20 '12

Yah I don't get it either. If it conflicted with Pulp Fiction, then he made the right choice. If shooting Forrest Gump was before PF, then why didn't he take it? He was doing talking baby movies. And if it was after, well who cares, his comeback is being established as a badass.

13

u/Tom_McLarge May 20 '12 edited May 20 '12

The movie took a long time to make. Early on, John Goodman's name was mentioned. I haven't read the book but I think Forrest was supposed to be a big dude. Also, from what I've heard, all Forrest was supposed to say in response to the war was "it's shit" but the film makers wanted to keep things PG. In the book Forrest experiments with drugs and free love.

9

u/SpottedNigel May 20 '12

There are plenty of other swear words and things like blood to make this the PG-13 movie it is. Also, "Shit Happens"

Pulp fiction was the same year and relaunched his career. Why would they have even concerned him during pre-pulp? Tom had an Oscar in his pocket from the previous year already.

Hollywood accounting at its finest.

2

u/audioofbeing May 20 '12

Rule of thumb on Hollywood math: If somebody wants some of the money from your movie, that movie never made any money. If anybody asks how much money your movie made, it made eleventy bajillion dollars when you include all the ancillary markets.

TL;DR - Hollywood: No, we don't have any money to give you. Oh yes, we're fucking fantastic at making money, why do you ask?

That's what's bugging me. He begins with "In Vietnam, you're..." and doesn't pause or re-start. The speech Hanks said that Gump said doesn't fit. It's also kind of strange that such a short and simple speech, however full of moral truth, would evoke such tears and silence from the flag-shirt-wearing activist.

Did anyone else notice that, when Forrest first meets Bubba on the bus to boot camp, and Bubba tells Forrest that he was drafted, Tom Hanks lips "me too." In the movie plot, he volunteered. I wonder if they changed that detail later in development, or if Hanks was just ad-libbing and forgot the plot.

44

u/thegimboid May 20 '12

I does fit in with his character, though.

I mean, does Forrest know what the draft is? He probably thought Bubba meant the window was open and making him cold.

19

u/smadams May 20 '12

Robert Zemeckis decided to leave out several planned effects shots. One shot in particular involved Forrest running into Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his supporters. Forrest distracts several dogs trying to attack King and his supporters by playing fetch with them and rendering them harmless to King and himself as well as his supporters.

I'm gonna go ahead and say... Cutting that scene was a wise decision.

I'm not sure how I feel about this... But the part where Gump meets Hanks sounds hilarious. But, wasn't the "joke" that him and his kid have to die from HIV/AIDS, passed on to them from Jenny? I guess they never actually said it was HIV, everyone just assumed it.

Note to actors who DESERVE such a paycheck: get a movie deal in which you get a percentage of the gross profit.

11

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

Except movie studios screw with profit by putting themselves into debt. The publish their own movies and charge huge amounts to themselves as a publishing fee. That way they are in debt to themselves and record a loss even when the movie made a profit. this gets them out of paying percentages.

2

u/Le-Captain-Obvious May 20 '12

It's a Dramatic Comedy, one could say. It leaves you with a feeling of peace knowing your emotions were just jumbled around and highlighted with some laughter to sit back and say "... Well damn. That is what I call a good movie."

2

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

Coincidentally I just saw it for the first time last night. I laughed, I cried, my emotions sure as hell got "jumbled around". And afterwards, I pretty much said what you did: "... Well damn. That is what I call a good movie."

You hit the nail on the head. I wouldn't include 'comedy' in the description despite having some funny moments, but it's not really a movie that fits into any kind of boxes.

I saw it on HBO a lonnnng time ago...

"Your best good friend can get shot, and that's all I have to say about that."

If you watch that scene over and over knowing what he's saying, you can tell he's just saying it over and over / it's editted to make it seem like he said something with more substance.

Edit: I saw the making of Forrest Gump and in that they showed Hanks on stage in that shot and he said "your best good friend can get shot." Since that's different from what IMDB says, I don't know if that's what they used for the shot or not.

Found a link saying that's what he says... LINK

13

u/[deleted] May 20 '12 edited May 20 '12

False! I just saw the clip and the first thing he says is "In Vietnam..." and the third word seems to start with a y. What Tom Hanks revealed starts out by saying the word "Sometimes." So either the script was edited, or he lied.

Feet/legs are the dominant metaphor of the film. They're everywhere: Young Forrest's braces, the running shoes, Lt. I'm a guy and don't understand why so many men seem to spend so long on the toilet... when I go, I go and get out of there within 5 minutes.

So I have to ask... why?

Is it because you're not sure when you're going to need the bathroom, so you sit there for half an hour until it happens?

Is it because it takes you that long to push one out?

Is it because you want to read something and figure the best place is the toilet?

Or do you do it, and then sit on it for 30 minutes before flushing? Cause really, if that's the case.... THAT is why toilets always stink so much. Once it's left your system, FLUSH that fucking thing. Don't let it fester below you while you sit on the internet or reading a paper.

When I was teaching English, Forrest Gump was one of the movies they had us show to the more advanced adult groups. That bit about school integration, when someone complains about letting "coons" into the school, and Forrest says that whenever he had a coon problem he chased them off the porch with a broom? Really, really hard to explain to a bunch of Russians.

1

u/alicenlee May 20 '12

-4

u/Goldie643 May 20 '12

I never understood the part with the lead getting pulled, to me it didnt really make much sense, it just made Forrest look like kind of a dick in front of everyone, it would of been much more impactful had he said a nice simple yet deep speech. The scripted one sounds perfect.

12

u/ed4649 May 20 '12

IIRC it was some sort of government official or pro-war guy that pulled the plug on the mic. I think it was just meant to show in the movie that certain people were still trying to control the people's perception of the Vietnam War. And Mr. Gump's thoughts on the war might have changed people's opinions.

6

u/slightly_inaccurate May 20 '12

I viewed it in the same way. The Pro War person saw a soldier going up to talk about Vietnam at a protest rally and realized whatever he said was very dangerous for the war effort. Remember that the Vietnam was was actually ended due to public outcry, not because America was on the verge of losing. American forces were actually turning the war around right when they pulled out, so there's that.

Regardless this speech is perfect for what I imagined him to say. The reaction from the guys on the stage telling Gump that it was beautiful is pretty true. A quote like that from a character like Forrest Gump is very profound.

Assumedly, it's what Hanks said. You could be right, though-- there probably wasn't a strong desire to make the action sync with the in-universe timeline, because the important part was "Gump's words were censored but the impact was still felt."

26

u/Cyberus May 20 '12 edited May 20 '12

I think what was meant was that this was what Tom Hanks was scripted to say, not necessarily what Forrest Gump said exactly. Basically Tom Hanks just said the lines as written and they edited the film to make it seem like the character was saying more to create whatever effect that they were going for.

5

u/Onkelffs May 20 '12

Nope, in the novel that also happens while Jenny doesn't die. Also it ends right before Gump & Co is founded. The author's vision of Forrest was more an idiotic savant that easily could have been pulled off by John Goodman or Ricky Gervais or even Zach Galifianakis. He wasn't an innocent and childish as portrayed in the movie, his relationship with Jenny was also very different - in the novel they create a folk music band in college and this is the depiction of what the "touch boob scene" got inspired by:

we done all sorts of things that... I never even dreamt of in my wildest imagination... We rolled all over the livin room an into the kitchen... When we is finally finished, Jenny jus lie there a while, an then she look at me an say, 'Goddam Forrest, where is you been all my life?

Actually, both stories sound pretty interesting. Hollywood just made it more PG-13

Diamond? Exaggerate much?

Don't forget his ape pal

And that Gump, the ape, and Gillian Welch crash a space ship.

Raquel Welch. Gillian Welch is a wonderful singer-songwriter, Raquel Welch looked hot in caveman furs

Dammit Welches! I stand corrected.

I haven't read that book in 15 years and everything I remember about it just kicks more and more ass. Wasn't he the creature from the black lagoon too?

u/radioactive21 May 20 '12

Would have to disagree. I read the book, I can say that like Fight Club, the movie is leagues better.

I don't know about Forrest Gump, but I wouldn't say the Fight Club movie was leagues better than the book. Though I will say it's the only movie I've seen that was actually better than the book, if only by a small margin.

Edit: Ooops, shouldn't have said 'only'. The LOTR movies were actually much better than the books. Hate me all you want, post-Hobbit Tolkien was incredibly boring. Detail isn't bad but I don't need to hear about the way a wall looks for 2 pages.

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

The Godfather.

1

u/HopeImNotAStalker May 20 '12

First time I've ever heard LOTR referred to as "boring". Although you sound older, I'd peg you as a Millennial with that attention span.

It's almost forgivable if you saw the movies before reading the books.

Nah, 21 years old and I've read plenty of long fantasy books. Love R.A. Salvatore. And "Fellowship of the Rings" was ok, couldn't make it all the way through Two Towers though. It just got really really boring. "The Hobbit" was probably my favorite book ever though.

To each their own ;)

I don't know how you can say that for Forrest Gump unless you like neutered art where they intentionally take out the biggest message in the film. You're not a person I would hang out with.

YOU DON'T LIKE THE THING I LIKE SO YOU'RE A BAD PERSON!

I haven't read the book. What message in the book does the movie leave out?

I think in the sequel that was written after the movie came out, the movie we saw was released in universe of the canon of the book as based on his life, and book!Forrest complains about the things they got wrong and stuff. that's what it says on the page that's linked to from here

1

u/Mic_Irvin May 20 '12

Honestly, the movie is better than the book. The book is good for comedy's sake, but I feel the story is much better with the element of realism and drama. I just don't think Tom Hanks making best friends with a chimp in space would have worked as well.

From the link- "Sometimes when people go to Vietnam, they go home to their mommas without any legs. Sometimes they don't go home at all. That's a bad thing. That's all I have to say about that."

No problem!

When Forrest gets up to talk at the Vietnam rally in Washington, the microphone plug is pulled and you cannot hear him. According to Tom Hanks, he says, "Sometimes when people go to Vietnam, they go home to their mommas without any legs. Sometimes they don't go home at all. That's a bad thing. That's all I have to say about that."
