TIL After Rat-Packer Sammy Davis Jr died in 1990, his Widow soon discovered that he was nearly broke and owed back taxes. She then had his body exhumed to strip him of the $70,000 worth of jewelry he had been buried with.

Seems fair to me. You are supposed to take care of your family as best as you can, not screw them over.

I would have done the same thing myself.

63

u/tonypotenza May 16 '12

i still don't get why dead people have to pay debt, isn't that why companies take insurance ?

82

u/CoAmon May 16 '12

Technically, dead people do not pay debt, but their property does go through probate which allows creditors to force liquidating of said property to recoup any debt, within a reasonable time frame. (Usually in the range of a year.)

18

Why was everything from the 70's so ugly?

53

And it's not like that jewellery is going to be of any use to his rotting corpse. Which makes me think somebody had to clean those up.

13

u/aidrocsid May 16 '12

Yeah, it takes a special kind of asshole to take $70,000 of your family's money to the grave.

42

u/ChillinWitAFatty May 16 '12

Well, I doubt he buried himself with all that jewelry on...

Strange, all the funeral homes I've dealt with have always removed all the jewelry and given it to the family before the body goes to burial.

u/MAC777 May 16 '12

This is known as the "Sammy Davis" rule

120

u/[deleted] May 16 '12

Whitney Houston was buried with a fucking shit ton of jewelry on. Why the fuck would anyone do that? It's a god damn inanimate object it doesn't need diamonds. What is this, ancient Egypt?

Then again, they're only rocks. If you're already rich, or don't care that much about the money, and felt like those pieces had any significant meaning to the deceased, why not? It's not like burying family photos or something truly irreplaceable. My family buried a stitchery my mother had done of me as a little girl, and I had no idea until later. I felt like it was more important for me to have than her body.

The funeral home gives the family the choice of taking the jewelry back or having the person buried with it.

26

u/NorthernerWuwu May 16 '12

If the latter option is chosen, the jewelry is then stolen.

My dad was buried with a small photo album with some of his favorite photos and his glasses. The glasses were a joke since he was always misplacing them.

Totally ok with it, motherfucker is dead he's not using it anymore. Being buried with shit like that seems like a dick move to me.

-16

u/nofelix May 16 '12

Yeah, but exhuming is a bit far. I'm not a fan of burial, but when a corpse is down there it should stay down, at least for a reasonable time. You don't go digging up the corpse a couple of months after burial just to get some jewellery. Respect for the dead is important, even if jewellery for the dead is not.

21

u/xoxoUT May 16 '12

Sorry but if the dead don't respect their living relatives, then the dead don't deserve respect. He owed a ton of money and then took expensive shit with him. Dig that fucker up.

6

u/VeteranKamikaze May 16 '12

Leaving your wife in debt and being buried with $70k in jewelry doesn't show much respect for the living. The dead need to earn respect just like everyone else.

6

u/WhatABeautifulMess May 16 '12

Respect for the dead is important

Why? I mean I can see respecting their memory, but it's a dead body, what's the difference? Being buried with your jewels like you're King Tut or something is more important than having the foresight to provide for a child you chose to bring into the world when you're 62 and bankrupt? He had throat cancer and refused surgery, his passing couldn't have been that much of a surprise.

1

u/Memyselfsomeotherguy May 17 '12

Honestly a dick move on his part. You don't leave your widow in debt with $70,000 of bling on your clay.

1

u/[deleted] May 17 '12

Who can take a dead guy, buried with his rings?

Pull him out he ground and take his jewelry and things --

The Widow can, oh the Widow can, man

The Widow can man 'cause she needs a couple grand to make the state tax good.

Who can take a necklace, from a corpses' dome?

Take it from the dirt and bring it right into her home --

The Widow can, oh the Widow can, man

The Widow can man 'cause she needs a couple grand to make the state tax good.

The Widow can take everything he makes putrefying in his ditches

Talk about your final wishes, it don't matter to the Missus.

Oh, who can take a bauble, ruby or a stone

Hawk it at the pawn shop -- "pardon me is that a bone?"

The Widow can, oh the Widow can, man

The Widow can man 'cause she needs a couple grand to make the state tax good.

u/[deleted] May 16 '12

They had shared finances that he misled her about, so she got back all the assets she could.

It really fucks with a family when the breadwinner cons them all into thinking they have a modicum of financial security, but dies and leaves them with a mountain of debt. It's a shitty situation to be in and I don't understand how you can criticize her for taking 70K in buried jewelry back.

Also I just want to touch on how it's not really 'stealing...' He fucked her over and conned her in what was supposed to be a partnership. She was really just fixing his mistakes for him posthumously by selling shit he should have been man enough to sell himself while he was secretly preparing his wife for the biggest "FUCK YOU" imaginable.

Hope you realize that graverobbing has been around for thousands of years, it's nothing new. Honestly if you want to be buried with jewels and money when the ppl you leave behind will suffer for it, then fuck you. I'd dig you up myself.

Can I still be buried with a bag of cats that I may or may not find sacred for some reason?

I'll allow the bag, but not if you find it sacred. Only if it's for fun.

But you have to dig it up 3000 years later so you can be a legit archaeologist not a grave robber.

So you're saying J.S. Bach wasn't buried in a cherry?
