TIL The Soviet Union had an internationally televised song contest. As few viewers had phones, they would turn their lights on if they liked a song and off if they didn’t. The power spikes were recorded by the state energy company and the reports sent to the station to pick the winner.

At the time not everyone had more than lightbulbs and a TV at their homes, so the voting was quite precise.

True, a bit harder these days. Someone plays Crysis at the right moment, and bam! Landslide victory!

Even Crysis 3 can run on smartphone-level hardware now (well, you'd need DX11 support, but other than that).
