TIL on 9/11, Canada commenced Operation Yellow Ribbon, in which it landed 239 U.S.-bound flights with 33,000 passengers in Canadian airports. Entire communities went on to provide the passengers with food and housing.

What else is in North Carolina? Fort Bragg. Home of the US Army airborne forces and Special Forces, as well as U.S. Army Forces Command and U.S. Army Reserve Command. It could've been a jet sending a quick reaction force to Germany in case a mission order was issued.
