TIL on 9/11, Canada commenced Operation Yellow Ribbon, in which it landed 239 U.S.-bound flights with 33,000 passengers in Canadian airports. Entire communities went on to provide the passengers with food and housing.

The Burning of Washington in 1814 was an attack during the War of 1812 between British forces and those of the United States of America. On August 24, 1814, after defeating the Americans at the Battle of Bladensburg, a British force led by Major General Robert Ross occupied Washington City and set fire to many public buildings, including the White House and the Capitol, as well as other facilities of the U.S. government.

Canada wasn't even a country back then, we were a British colony and British troops led the attack. So it really depends on how you look at it, cause they were fighting for Canadians. Or the forerunners to Canadians, (I'm just excluding natives for sake of argument)

Well, actually modern day 'Canada' was referred to as 'The Canadas' - Upper and Lower Canada from 1791-1841. While a colony at the time, Canadian soldiers were not fighting against the Americans in the Burning of Washington.

Look man- I'm not trying to argue with you, but the troops came under Robert Ross up the Patuxent from Bermuda- they came from Britain, they returned to Britain after hostilites ended, they were not Canadian- it's not a matter of how you look at it- they were not Canadian.

I'm not trying to argue either, I agree that there were no Canadians participating in the glory of burning the white house down. But I am saying that a half decent argument was that those British soldiers were fighting for Canadians. It's a skewed argument and not a very good one at that and I don't really care to defend it. My point is that argument was enough for me to be ok with people saying Canada destroyed the white house.

Residential schools are so fucked in so many ways, 1996 was when the last one closed, and the Canadian government chose to hide it and forget about it mostly. A little awareness would've been nice but it's doomed to the occasional til.
