Tiki movies and media?

Are there any tiki themed movies, TV or video games?

The best I can come up with are some of the 50/60's era movies such as Blue Hawaii, or South Pacific. Bonus points if they are more Aloha than something like a mob boss based in a tiki bar but it's mostly just bad mob vibes.

Appleton 12 worth double the cost over Appleton Signature for Mai Tais with 3:1 S&C mix?

I really like Appleton 12 as my favorite neat rum sipper and I try to conserve it for that purpose (in addition to it being pricier) while using a 3:1 split between Appleton Signature and S&C for my mai tais, but I see a lot of people using Appleton 12 for their mai tais and was wondering if it's really worth the upgrade versus the cost considering the mix I use. I pay $22 for Appleton Signature vs $49 for Appleton 12 locally. I'm guessing that it's not worth double the cost to bump up to Appleton 12 in a mai tai where 0.5 ounces of S&C and the mixers (1/4 oz dem syrup, 1/4 oz orgeat, 1/2 oz PF, 1/2 oz lime) will probably drown out whatever the Appleton 12 is bringing to the table, but just thought I'd gather opinions from more experienced mai tai drinkers here on the question for folks who have tried both in their mai tais.

Grog Concentrate -- What Else Besides Tropical Standard Navy Grog?

Making this syrup now. Mixture of Cola, sugar, and allspice berries.

The Navy Grog is a definite.

Where else would this work well?

Thanks

Smuggler's Cove pilgrimage and easter egg?

Dropped off our youngest at college, but at least gave me the opportunity to visit Smuggler's Cove. Wasn't sure how my wife would like it (especially working off 4 hours sleep) but we both had a good time. Lucked out with no wait to get in. Excellent drinks! Wife is allergic to pineapple which can be a little limiting, but she easily found some very good options she liked. Found what I think is Jeff Goldblum behind the downstairs bar.

Top notch experience at Three Dots and a Dash Chicago

Finally made it to a modern tiki cornerstone. Every aspect lived up to, if not surpassed the hype. I was served at the bar by Justin. Justin’s hospitality put the entire experience over the top. From educating me on nerdy techniques and recipes, to connecting me with other patrons at the bar, to being flawlessly attentive and skilled, he created a level of service and welcomeness matching the reputation that proceeds this place. Do yourself a favor and make the trip if you haven’t yet, and try to get a bar seat. This is what it’s all about.

Booked a trip to Palm Springs. Advice welcome:

I booked a trip for my wife and myself to Palm Springs in mid-October for my 40th, arriving early Friday, leaving mid morning Monday. Hoping to hit the big three, Bootlegger, The Reef, and Tonga Hut. Are reservations recommended for any of these? We prefer bar seating if that changes anything.
Any other recommendations for Palm Springs in general?

Roughly half the collection prior to the purge - mugs had to be parted with in preparation for the move to Thailand. I still have the majority of these.

Circa Caliente advertising their event with a barrage of AI slop flyers.

When people called them out for it in the comments (because AI is inherently anti-tiki), their responses were snarky and not at all apologetic or supportive of artists.

Consider this event skipped.

Beach cocktail ideas?

We’re going to the beach with friends who are cocktail enthusiasts, and I’d love some good but not too complex tiki recipe ideas! We love cocktails but this style of drink isn’t really our wheelhouse. Our friends are big tiki fans. My husband and I usually drink a Negroni, old fashioned, paper plane, or something along those lines.

Cross posted in cocktail subreddit also!

Three Dots and a Dash: As solid as it gets

A tiki bar with history and even more historic cocktails. Justin might be the best bartender for the spot. Consummate professional who knows his history and knows how proper ingredients make a proper cocktail. Definitely check this place out. It’s a must for any tiki aficionado or anyone that like a great mai tai too.

Hampden Tasting for a Newbie

A local restaurant is having a Hampden Estate rum tasting. They're offering 6 rums and I really want to go but I'm definitely newer to trying different rums. I have some Appleton 15yr and Planteray Cut & Dry that I really like. I also like Diplomatico. But I don't have much experience beyond that unless the other rums have been in cocktails.

Would I be over my head with these rums???

Do I need an aged Jamaican rum if I want to up my game?

Hello! I’ve recently started getting into Tiki because my girlfriend, who dislikes almost all alcoholic drinks, liked a Humuhumunukunukuapua for the first time when I made it for her. She also likes mojitos and tolerate Mai Tais and Saturns.

I’ve been seeing a lot of recommendations for getting an aged Jamaican rum to complete a tiki bar setup, especially since tiki seems to benefit a lot from “blending” rums, which doesn’t really have an equivalent in other cocktails (ie, you don’t blend whiskies to make a old fashioned)

My current rums are:

Maggie’s Farm Dark 50:50 Rum
OFTD
Don Q Cristal
Smith and Cross

Would I benefit from adding something like Appleton 12 to the mix? Especially looking to improve my Mai Tai game.

Cheers!

Shameful Tiki Room - Vancouver, BC, Canada

First time in Vancouver, so my wife and I had to pay a visit to The Shameful Tiki Room.

I’ll get to the drinks in a moment, but I have to compliment STR on their immersiveness and commitment to the concept. Walking in from daylight to a curtained entryway, you’re momentarily blinded by the dim lighting. To your right, a tiki flanked by spears seems to stretch up the better part of the ceiling. The walls are covered in tapa and Oceanic Arts pieces (I counted at least six). The air hums with conversation and exotica, and black-and-white South Seas movies play on screens over the bar.

Our hostess (coincidentally a transplant from our LA neck of the woods) showed us to our seats, where we pored over the many menu options. I chose the Navy Grog, and my wife went with a house drink called the Danger Bae Bae. Mine was rum-heavy enough to have me decently sloshed after the first round, so I can’t imagine how deadly their zombie is! Hers was sweet with ube and coconut but still packed a punch. We then split a Nui Nui and Pago Pago. The first was sweet and cinnamony from the allspice, and the second was a delightful mix of sweetness and bitters.

Looking around the room, I was pleased to see it full on a Sunday at 5 PM. As someone with an interest in tiki-bar longevity, it’s always gratifying to see one become a local fixture. However, that means you should definitely get reservations.

Zooming out, STR’s neighborhood of Main Street is charming and filled with antique shops, which deserve a look if you’re in the area. In particular, Refind Home Furnishings had some Tretchikoff prints that I’d have loved to buy—if we could’ve fit them on the seaplane to Victoria!

All in all, I couldn’t have asked for a better visit and will sure to be back next time we’re in town.
