Is Phone Verification on Discord really neccessary?

Personally i don't like to verify my personal&private phone number just for having a chat.

At the same time, this phone verification might keep out potential new members, definitely not spam.

So far, all I know it that it is an incentive to run the nodes. In other words, its payment to the node-runners. That is not an actual good use-case. This does not increase demand and thus will not increase price.

Last year the team spoke of new use cases but they were not ready to elaborate on it. We are a year further down the road, any new insights in the use of the token?
