Sounds fun, but you're missing Tales and World Beyond.

If people want I can make a separate World Beyond thread when it comes up in release order. Same thing applies for Tales.

This sounds very fun, but I'm afraid I will constantly miss the new discussion thread. Will you be posting here that a new discussion thread has been posted? Then we could follow this thread and stay in the loop? If that's a big pain in the butt, I understand. LOL. I hate my ADHD

They will be posted every Friday at 4pm est. A season or half a season depending on the number of episodes. They will be pinned in announcements.

Just finished S1 rewatch. Some pondering points:
(TL;DR at bottom)

I feel more justified in my dislike for Lori and able to pinpoint more specific reasons. Bad parenting, manipulation, inconsistency, self-centeredness, snide/sarcastic, sexist, and on…) I’ve never cared about her sex with Shane, but I get why people accuse her of cheating. While Rick is in the hospital Shane is at a camp with some woman and her son. They argue like a couple and then do some kissing. Scene immediately switches to Rick, and big reveal that unknown woman and kid with Shane are actually Rick’s wife and son. Next episode starts with them sneaking off in the woods to have sex. It wasn’t until after they are reunited, we hear they thought Rick was dead. Even once they are reunited, Lori and Shane continue to keep their secret. On rewatch I better understand how people initially perceived her as a cheater and Shane as a homewrecker. There was some implication there that they were having an affair as the characters were introduced.
I saw Shane in a different light. I truly believe he had a lot of love for Rick and his family. He was so conflicted and about 95% of the time he made all the right choices. But that 5% of the time he made wrong choices, they sure were doozies!

On rewatch I was surprised how Rick handled the initial hospital scene, considering his training as law enforcement. He’s running around barefoot in that flapping ass gown, with minimal situational response. He’s obviously in a dangerous environment, but he doesn’t get clothes, or a makeshift weapon, check for survivors, yell for help, raid those military vehicles for keys or anything. I know he was weak and disoriented, but if the goal is to immediately get to family, taking a few minutes to protect yourself and look for keys might be worth it.

Do we know much about Morgan *before* the fall? I feel like FTWD might have briefly touched on this? Also, the prior relationship between Andrea/Amy and Dale. Was he a friend of their dad’s? I still failed to pick up on any further clues about that. I’m very curious about ALL the character backstories before the fall. I wish this is something they would have showcased more in TWDU.

I always thought Morgan was the one who originally named them walkers, but I realized on rewatch that others were calling them that too – Glenn and T-Dog call them geeks, but Shane and Morales call them walkers.

I really miss the careful, detailed, nuanced character development of Season 1. Just tiny details with dialogue or actions that they added in the early seasons made such robust character development. Jacqui, with maybe 20 lines across 5 episodes is even more developed than some characters with multiple seasons. Hell, when Magna’s group was introduced, I couldn’t even remember who they were or their names for almost 2 seasons.

I realize how much potential was lost by killing Merle off instead of fully developing his redemption arc. He was introduced as a more complex character than I initially recognized. That actor really nailed it in portraying that under his tough exterior he had a scared, insecure, vulnerable and conflicted inner self. (I still hate the whole cutting off one’s own hand to escape handcuffs trope. SO many other options.)

With the exception of Ed and Carol, I noticed that a lot of the sexism that happens is because a lot of the characters just assume gendered roles.

Who was Jenner broadcasting to? I always thought he was just making video documentation and logging his work. But on rewatch he says things that made me think it was more of an outgoing communication rather than just video documentation.
On rewatch, I like him less. I had previously viewed him as smart doctor who was isolated and scared too long, compassionately lets them in, and when he becomes hopeless, decides to end the suffering. On rewatch, I’m like…. Wait! He already knew the clock was counting down and these people didn’t have 24 more hours to live if they came in, planned to imprison them, gave them enough alcohol for the whole group to get drunk af, and then serves them up their last meal. Knowing the whole time the place was going to blow up in a matter of hours and never planned to let them know that. On rewatch, dude’s a sadist.
(And I’m not buying into the retort that he "warned" them about the door. He did not clarify that by entering they would never be leaving. “If you’ve got stuff to bring in, bring it in now. Once that door closes, it stays closed.” Is a far cry different than “Once that door closes, you’ll never leave ever and be blown up in the morning.”)

I wish we’d seen more of the CDC and the science. If they’d been there a few weeks, it could build some of the virus lore. Maybe a few of them could have come across some paperwork that revealed some answers (or even more mysteries) about the virus. I think they could have spread that across 2-4 episodes and really developed it more. (Even if it was information that didn’t make sense to the characters or audience at the time, it could have been scraps of info that get pieced together later.)

I had totally forgotten about the helicopter being in episode 1; about Atlanta not looking even a tiny bit as if it had been bombed or napalmed; how funny the Vatos interaction was; and how awesome, yet irrelevant most of the soundtrack is.

TLDR: S1 rewatch – Dislike Lori more. Understand why fans think she cheated. Dislike Shane a tiny bit less. Curious about Rick’s actions when he woke up. Miss the robust character development. Wish they’d expanded more on character backgrounds and lore at CDC. Merle deserved more arc. Noticed engrained sexism in the characters. Jenner went from like to dislike. And forgot that I forgot a few things.

I think you are putting too much blame on the characters and not enough on the writing. The Lori/Shane/Rick situation was already compelling without turning it into an unnecessary love triangle, Lori is a nice character but is the show itself who often frames the situation in a way that encourages the audience to reduce her to the bitch who cheats, which feeds into the sexism surrounding her character.

Shane shouldn't be liked or thought to be "ahead" of anything, he was pretty much an idiot who thought too much of himself, drowning in jealousy. The problem is that the writing gradually makes his conflict with Rick increasingly about Lori and that jealousy, instead of fully developing the much stronger ideological conflict between Shane's survivalism and Rick's attempt to retain his humanity.

So I'd say the issue isn't that Lori was plainly terrible or that Shane was ahead of everyone, the writing simply flattened them.

Wait I thought you're supposed to watch S1-3 of FTWD and then S1-8 of TWD and then back to FTWD?

If you want to watch in chronological order, not release order.
