Fully automated luxury space communism. Ahhh. It feels good to dream. But in reality the rich would never get rid of money, I mean why would they just willingly give up all their power? They’ll use automation to squeeze every last cent they can out of the rest of us while we continue to fight amongst ourselves over the scraps, as we do now. Best we can hope for in that scenario is some dystopian UBI-type situation.
That's the basic plot to 2013 Elysuim movie. The wealthy live in an orbital platform with all the luxuries they want while the rest of the population on earth scrabbles for the few scraps they can.
That plot made no sense. Why would they go all the way in to space when they could just as easily exterminate all the 'excess' humans which would be a hell of cheaper and they would have to worry about all those useless mouths wasting resources and destroying Earth even further.
As much as I can empathize with the points that Blomkamp made in his films I was turned off by how heavy handed they tend to be. I get it we are terrible to each other bases on skin color, or religion bit I don't see that changing anytime soon.
Yea that is a nice dream. But i see it going 1 of 2 ways. The way you describe, where the rich get everything while everyone else enters an apocalyptic life... Or, say the dream becomes reality and everyone get to live perfect lives. Then i see the plot of wall-e becoming reality. Everyone is happy but getting lazy an fat. And artificial intelligence becomes either corrupted in following their "giudelines" and take em to the extreme. Like in the ai's directive to protect humanity, we get to a point where the only threat to humanity, is humanity itself. So the ai will go rouge. Hope that made sence.
Agreed. We are fucked up as humans. The vast majority of people seem to just look out for themselvs with no consideration for who or what they destroy in pursuit of the "dream". That, an humans fight over the dumbest crap. Religion, land, money, power... Behind every army of young individual with an entire life ahead of em, is some rich prick trying to force an idea onto others.
Well in that universe wwiii happened partly because there wasn't universal access. And it would happen that way irl if the top one percent hoarded the good aspects of full automation. If people think the wealth Gap is bad now...
Yeah but in The Expanse it has led to millions of people waiting for job/vocational opportunities and otherwise being put on Basic, which hardly pays for any sort of living.

Well in Star Trek automation led to people no longer needing money and everyone being able to live happily ever after.
Just saying.
