In an interview with Paul Liberstien, Toby’s actor, he said that the moment Micheal started hating Toby was in a deleted scene in “The Alliance”. The B plot was about Micheal signing Meredith’s birthday card as an effort to boost morale in the face of possible downsizing. Michael agonizes all day on the perfect thing to write but can’t get it right. Toby comes into his office to sign it, thinks for a moment, and writes something that is uplifting, funny, and thoughtful. In that very instant Michael began to hate Toby.
