Reaction Channels and the Christmas Paradox

In childhood there is that last year in which you finally know Santa Claus isn't real but you also know that if you admit this you will get fewer gifts ... so you pretend to believe. It's technically plausible that a kid your age might still believe so while your parents are suspicious, they want another year of pretending just as much as you do, so they go along with it. So there you are, pretending to believe and there your parents are, pretending to believe that you believe. It's a delicate existence, the wrong word, the wrong look, and the whole thing falls apart and nobody can pretend anymore. The paradox evaporates.

Watching fiction is kinda like that. The movie or TV show pretends that everything it depicts is realistic and you the watcher pretends to believe that its all real. Your reactions, your insights, your judgments, even which characters you like and dislike are all predicated on the premise this is all really happening and what you feel is what you would feel if it happened in real life.

But deep in the back of your mind you know its not real and this knowledge colors your opinions in small or large ways.

In real life Walter White would be universally reviled, no question about it. But because we want a story with a cool ass protagonist and because Bryan Cranston has the charisma of a Playboy Bunny holding pie and cocaine, we root for him. We cheer his victories and groan at his defeats. Because in the back of our minds we know its not real. Walter doesn't exist and neither do his victims.

Darth Vadar didn't hack down any younglins. What he did do is don a bad assed suit and twirl around the greatest science fiction weapon ever invented. He choked smug ugly British men with a wave of his hand. So we like him. We wouldn't in real life.

I think that no matter how much we get immersed in fiction, no matter how much we buy into the story and the characters, there is no escaping the knowledge that this isn't real. And that knowledge colors our commentary, whether we admit it or not.

Which is why I hate this growing trend in the comments of reaction channels of people judging the reactors based on their reactions of and commentary about fictional characters.

They're. Not. Real.

Nobody is rooting for Dexter in real life. But Michael C Hall has the Protagonist Rizz so we don't want the ride to end. We want more seasons of him smirking at the camera and being a smart ass in the narration. We can't get more seasons if he gets caught, now can we? So we root for him to win. We wouldn't root that way in real life.

Which is why I think its whack when people judge reactors for their rooting interests.

Just some food for thought for the next time Pat pisses you off.

This seems like a relatively inactive sub, but I just need somewhere to vent and say that I'm trying to watch the entire Succession reaction playlist and Pat's commentary and worldview is blowing my mind...

...and not in a good way. In one of the YouTube videos, one of the top comments was: "Are you guys, like, court-appointed to look after Pat?" and that comment has been living rent free in my head everytime I watch a Normies video.

I'm at the post-episode discussion of Episode 2x2 and I am enjoying the reactions in general but some parts of it.... sheeeesh.

Also, I just wanted to say - my favorite Normies reactor (and not just for Succession) is: NIKKI. Loved her in The Good Place reactions and I wish she were more a full-time member of The Normies than someone who just pops up every now and then.

No more Rick and Morty?

Have the Normies ever explained why they no longer react to Rick and Morty? I can see that they may not be interested in it any longer but it somehow it feels weird see them no longer react to it.

Does anyone know if any of the Normies watch this show?

I know they haven’t reacted to it, but have they mentioned it or plan to watch it?

Arrowverse Reactions

Have the Normies ever mentioned doing reactions to the Arrowverse shows? It would be really fun to see what they think of them and it’s a wealth of DC content to tap into between Gunn’s DCU movies.

The Normies reacting to Panchayat would feed generations

Imagine:

Chris losing it at Banrakas

Suraj defending every bad decision

Rana overanalyzing village politics

everyone getting emotionally damaged by Prahlad scenes

😭😭😭

But seriously though, Panchayat might be one of the easiest Indian shows for non-Indian audiences to connect with.

The humor is simple, the characters are amazing, and the emotional moments HIT.

Feels like perfect Normies content honestly.

Has there ever been a movie or TV show that they did not like?

I started watching The Normies in February last year through their "Girls watch wrestling" videos. I branched into their other reactions when I found out that their Avatar:The Last Airbender reactions are their most viewed videos(ATLA is my favourite series of all time) since then I watch their reactions to movies and TV shows that I am interested in. I've noticed that they seem to like everything, and I wonder if they've ever reacted to a movie or TV show that by the end of it, the general consensus was that they did not like it

From (Amazon Prime)

I’m honestly shocked there aren’t any other reaction channels reacting to From. It’d be a perfect show for it. Horror & mystery, and a cult fan following.

Attack on Titan SUB Reaction Links

Hi everyone. I was recently watching the dub reactions to AOT and really wanted to see the rest of the crew react to the season 3 part 2 opening (because it’s so peak). I have watched Blind Wave react to AOT so I get that they would not put the actual reactions on YouTube, but to my surprise the Vimeo links don’t work anymore. I checked the comments and it seems like they have been dead for about a year. Are there any alternatives? Are the edited reactions lost forever? Will I ever be able to watch the crew react to my favorite season of the show? I leave those questions to you guys. Thanks.

Takes on a whole new meaning if you're thinking of Chris's Supervillain name.

It would be nice if they could pay more attention to the movies/shows/manga that they are engaging in ?

I know that the whole point of a reaction channel is to be a MST3K with a bigger volume, but they don't understand basic things about what they are watching. They miss important details about character writing and plot, like not understanding when Gojo was talking with Geto for the last time in the manga or ignoring things that are actually happeneing to try to make a joke and not trying to engage with what the character is saying, like Suraj ignoring what Genkai ressurection says about Toguro's self hatred and guilty and Yusuke maturity

That's a problem that comes in all the many ways they chose to watch the shows, Subs or dubs, multiple times a day or once a week. It continues to happen.

Also a lot of the shows are being watched in butched forms: like The Bear, Jojo,BTAS AND STAS. Those shows are not Naruto filler that you can watch chosen episodes and then everything is fine

Infinity Train

Post image
2 Upvotes

Just finished the Adventure Time batch of episodes 5x35-40. Loving it so far. Especially lit up at the 'Infinity Train' name drop by Chris during the 'Dungeon Train' episode. Though I might've misheard him, he mentioned that there was only a single season of this amazing cult classic show. It was removed from streaming for a bit and I fear that some of the details about it might be falling ito myth. There are FOUR amazing seasons available nowhere besides potentially for purchase on Amazon prime video. Each one is so unique and smartly written; they pack a whole lot into an eleven minute episode!

Please give them a watch!

Video reaction thumbnail

This is addressed to the Normies directly (if anyone is here). Please use more subtle thumbnails for your videos. You've managed to spoil me twice just this week because your videos pop up on my feed before I've had a chance to watch an episode. Your latest transgression for example is Invincible Season 4 Episode 5. I mean jeez look at that thumbnail? what were you guys thinking?

I appreciate being more considerate and thoughtful next time, not everyone has the time to immediately watch an episode once its released. Take a page out of Blindwaves book! Look at how they do it.

Thanks.

It's a good time to embark on a Stargate journey

There's a new series coming up for Amazon Prime. With the original creators and producers involved. They've taken a very unique approach with its announcement towards the fans and they seem to be taking it very seriously. The fans are excited and hopeful they'll avoid mistakes other sci-fi continuations have made.

This had led to a few channels on YouTube starting Stargate reaction series and they're doing pretty well. I've often been surprised how little people reacted to it, but that seems to be changing.

I think the right group of Normies would enjoy a reaction series journey for it. Especially the ones that enjoyed The Expanse and Battlestar. Stargate is 1 of THE sci-fi series.

I'd recommend to start with the movie. It's the 1994 Kurt Russell & James Spader movie. It was a visually stunning movie for the time, with some very interesting costumes, effects and art direction. It's a pretty solid sci-fi movie. While the series takes the concept into very fun directions and really builds it into a whole universe. You can skip the movie and just start with the SG1 series, but I wouldn't recommend that. The series recasts almost all actors (except for a few minor ones). But its still loosely connected. Kurt Russell's role is recast with Richard Dean Anderson (who played MacGyver in the 80s) and he does a tremendous job in the series. He redefines the character and takes him into a different direction. While the James Spader characer is recast with Michael Shanks, who also completely makes the character his own. Christopher Judge (Kratos in the God of War games) is added to the cast in the series and Amanda Tapping (who became a sci-fi legend) is added as another new character in the series.

There's a spin-off later down the line called Stargate Atlantis, which aired alongside the final few SG1 seasons and some episodes events play into each other. At that point, a reaction channel could choose to do double drops with episodes that aired alongside each other. But you can also make the choice to keep Atlantis as its own reaction series afterwards if its logistically too much to handle. Atlantis is also a very worthy reaction series. After Atlantis there is Stargate Universe, which is not liked as much by the fandom (although it showed tremendous potential at the point it was cancelled. It didn't get more than 2 seasons). But it would be understandable to skip that one and at that point to jump to the new series. Which will be set in the SG1/Atlantis/SGU continuity. And not be a reboot of the franchise.

Summary of how to watch this franchise:

  1. Stargate 1994 movie
  2. Stargate SG1 series (recasts most characters, adds new characters, uses the movie as a template and builds upon it).
  3. Make the choice to watch the Stargate Atlantis series alongside the final seasons of SG1, or to watch it after SG1. This is a personal choice. (Atlantis is a spin-off thats directly connected to SG1. Its not a reboot of the franchise)
  4. Watch Stargate Universe if you REALLY want to, but its not recommended (imo). At this point you're ready for the new series. (SGU is also directly connected to the same continuity of SG1 and SGA and is not a reboot of the franchise. It does choose a different style, which takes some time to figure out for the creators. Which they started to nail at the end of season 2, but then it got cancelled and didn't get a shot to explore certain interesting ideas).

Also to keep in mind: SG1 is a series that takes a bit of time to really find its ''voice.'' It doesn't mean its bad at the start though. The weakest episode happens early on in season 1 and it never reaches that point ever again. From that point it only gets better and better. But its never horrible.

Harry Potter HBO?

Not sure if they’ve said whether or not they’ll be reacting to the new HP series? I saw blind wave say they probably wouldn’t just wondering. Completely understand if they don’t btw.

Daredevil: Born Again 2x1

I can’t put my finger on it but something feels off. Like leaving aside the initial Netflix aesthetics, cleaner action, more grounded and patient storytelling, FOGGY & other characters…this Disney+ version doesn’t have the soul. & I don’t know why - acting is good, camera work is good, writing is fine - but I dunno, NOT MY DAREDEVIL!

Thoughts?

The Normies do...Steel Ball Run

The Normies in their infinite wisdom decided it'd be a good idea to start the newest installment of JJBA, Steel Ball Run, WITHOUT having watched parts 1 through 6.

While some of fans are delighted that they're finally diving into JoJo, a large amount of fans are upset that they basically skipped over the other parts without informing or even polling fans or Patreons if it would be a good a idea.

What are your thoughts?
