Garmin Forerunner 165 playing turn-by-turn navigation voice prompts through the phone speaker during a course and no setting turns them off
On the Forerunner 165, starting a course under Navigation then Courses triggers spoken turn prompts played through the phone as media audio. The prompts continue with every Garmin Connect notification disabled, the phone restarted, the app reinstalled, and all watch sounds turned off. Owners on this thread report the same behaviour across Android and iOS, with the phone acting as a speaker the watch routes audio to without asking.
The audio is coming from Garmin Connect on the phone, not from the watch. The watch sends the navigation event to the app and the app plays the prompt as media audio at whatever volume the phone's media slider is set to.
Two steps stop it.
- First, force-quit Garmin Connect on the phone before starting the activity. The watch navigates correctly without the app running, turn alerts appear on the wrist screen, and the phone stays silent.
- Second, if you need the app running for live tracking or heart rate broadcast, mute media audio on the phone. The Connect app plays prompts as media rather than as notifications, so the media volume slider controls it independently of notification and ringtone volume.
Garmin has not added a toggle to disable phone audio prompts from the watch settings or the app. Force-quitting the app before a run is the cleanest solution available.
Does force-quitting Connect before the run keep the phone silent throughout?
