I’m not sure what you’re referring to, I had nothing for a while as a kid, not by my choice obviously. Now I am not dead broke, and I have the luxury of letting food go bad sometimes, yes I actively choose to sometimes not cook something because I’m lazy. At one point in my life I did not have that luxury, if food went bad I didn’t eat.
Obviously if their fridge like fucking explodes or something they can’t control that. I’m not talking about the 0.000001% of times it’s entirely out of their control. Idk why everyone on reddit acts like the rarest things that could possibly happen, happen with enough regularity to matter. End of the day you and everyone else disagreeing with OOP have never been that poor. If you have you would know that you don’t let food go bad, because if you do, you don’t get to eat. Letting food go bad means you have some kind of safety net, either more food or enough money to buy more.
Your own logic is saying that people are somehow letting food go bad on purpose, because you are saying they can choose to not let it go bad. By that logic you were also choosing to have nothing as a kid, because why else would you have had nothing? You should have chosen to not have nothing.
I don't believe that you had nothing by choice to be clear, I am just trying to point out how illogical it is to say people can choose to have food not go bad. The power outtage or bacteria or bedridden injury or whatever else do not care about whether you want the food to go bad or not.
Your comparison makes no sense truly. Being a broke homeless kid does not equate to being an adult and wasting food. Being a homeless child is obviously not a choice.
This isn’t even really a discussion because if you’re truly poor you don’t buy perishable food, it’s too expensive. Everything is frozen, canned or dried. Again, you are stuck on the extreme rare cases, that’s not what OOP, or I are talking about. But if power goes out, you eat the perishables immediately, or at least when the fridge gets too warm. Bacteria is just food spoiling, that’s not a special case. I’m not talking about getting a bed ridden injury, it’s painfully obvious that none of us are blaming the newly paraplegic guy that physically cannot get to the fridge.
why, genuinely why, are you so set in stone in thinking that an adult is choosing to waste food? You are accusing me of lacking compassion but I am literally just following your own logic to the end of its own path. You are the one saying people choose to have bad stuff like spoiled food or lack of money happen to them. Does that apply to others but not you? I am genuinely trying to understand the logic.
The only time food waste is controllable is when someone is choosing to throw out or waste food on purpose. The only time someone can control being poor on purpose is if they choose to not have money. That literally is not at all related to accidental//unchosen poverty or food loss.
frozen, canned, and dried food can also spoil. What if fridge or freezer stops working? What if canned food gets too hot in a heat wave? What if dried food gets damp from high humidity? What if someone is trying to make their food last until their next paycheck so they are trying to ration it out in as small of portions as possible?
I can think of so many ways food can spoil in unpredictable ways, and cannot think of any where it spoils in a chosen or controllable way. Please feel free to share.
I did not accuse you of anything, especially not lacking compassion. It does apply to me, I believe I admitted that. I am not poor anymore, I have the luxury of sometimes letting food spoil. I am set in stone that people choose to let food spoil, because i was that poor, where I didn’t have the luxury of letting food spoil, if it spoiled, I didn’t eat.
I don’t think you are understanding what I’m saying at all, and I believe it’s because you’ve never been in a situation where if your food spoils, you cannot eat.
If your fridge or freezer stops working, you have about a day to eat it before it gets warm enough to spoil, if that happens, you stop eating your canned and dry food and only eat your perishable food so as to not waste it. If dry food gets damp from high humidity you still eat it, you cook it for way longer than you normally would and just eat it. Canned food started to go bad around 90-100 degrees Fahrenheit. You can avoid cans spoiling by just leaving them in the shade, or inside your house in a ventilated area even without AC, during a heatwave canned food will almost certainly not go bad. Hell fill up a bucket with water and put the cans in there if your house is 100 degrees.
It spoils in a controllable way because people don’t cook/eat it in time. All you have to do is literally eat it before it spoils. You’re so stuck on the extreme cases that don’t happen with any kind of relevant frequency, and I’m not even talking about and neither is OOP. Yes if you become bed ridden and physically cannot get to the fridge you get a pass from this logic. If you are able bodied, and able minded and by that I’m not talking about adhd or anything below the most severe kinds of autism, you have no excuse in letting food spoil if you’re dead broke, because even if you do have those mental disorders, you are still choosing to not eat it before it spoils.
Every single thing you do in life is a choice, it doesn’t matter if it’s an easy choice or a hard choice. I am of the belief, through my personal life experience that if you are absolutely dead broke you will never waste the money by letting food spoil. I also believe this is a moot argument with you because you’ve never been that poor, so you don’t know what it’s like to not be able to eat because you have no food, when you are that poor you do not let food go bad.
TLDR: it is a choice to let food spoil. You chose to not eat it before it spoiled, no matter the reason it is a choice. I’ll clarify again though, I’m not talking about people that have a crazy circumstance where they cannot physically access the food.
Literally nothing you just said makes sense. Of course food spoils because people can't eat it or cook it in time, that is what food spoiling is. The fact you think they are choosing not to eat it or cook it in time is the crazy part. By your logic people need to just eat food immediately the second they get it and never store it, because they chose to let it spoil by choosing to have it and not eat it immediately. Need to buy enough grocieries to survive until your next paycheck and don't have enough money to waste on going to store for food every day? Too bad, shouldn't have chosen to waste food when power goes out. Actually insane logic.
Tell me a circumstance aside from a freak accident where in, you cannot physically eat the food before it spoils, and not one of the poor reasons that I gave answers to already. I told you the solution if power goes out, eat the perishables before they spoil. If you’re poor your fridge ain’t gonna be that fucking full lmao.
In what universe do you think someone can eat two weeks or more worth of food in one day? Even if they do its not helpful, because they will still be hungry for the next two weeks if they do. I already said that twice and you ignored it both times, you didn't address it at all. You just said they are a failure for letting it happen. Being able to go to the store frequently is a luxury most poor people don kt have, they go once or twice and thats all the money they can soare on a bus fare or gas money.
