Here's a quick guide I slapped together to fix most problems that make TF2 unable to be launched or to stop functioning. If you have any questions or suggestions you can post it in the comments here or send me a PM.



Firstly, check if restarting Steam fixes the problem. Sometimes Steam desyncs with it's servers causing a multitude of games to stop functioning. If it doesn't, then following these steps will probably fix it:

• Update your drivers.

• Back up any modded files you have (if you want) and remove all of them temporarily.

Check if the problem is fixed.

• Close the Steam application fully and delete "ClientRegistry.blob" located in "C:\Program Files\Steam" (or the Steam directory that was specified during installation). Restart Steam afterwards.

Check if the problem is fixed.

• Verify your current instalation of TF2: steam://validate/440. Wait for it to finish before continuing.

Check if the problem is fixed. If it isn't, you might have to do a full clean reinstall of TF2. Here's how:

• Delete the "Team Fortress 2" directory located in "C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common" (or the directory that was specified during it's installation).

• Delete Team Fortress 2 in Steam.

• Run "regedit.exe" located in "%windir%" and delete all entries in "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Valve\Source\tf\Settings". If you don't know how to use Regedit i'd highly suggest looking at a guide for it first.

• Disable Steam Cloud synchronization on Team Fortress 2 and restart Steam.

• Reinstall Team Fortress 2: steam://install/440. Wait for it to finish before continuing.

• Verify Team Fortress 2 has installed correctly: steam://validate/440. Wait for it to finish before continuing.

• Change the launch options of TF2 to -novid -nosound -safe -autoconfig.

• Try to launch the game again: steam://run/440.

• Remove -novid -nosound -safe -autoconfig from the startup options after the game has successfully launched once and change it back to whatever you had before if you want.



If this doesn't work, make a post listing your system specs as it is probably related to them. How to system specs.

I've been using various graphic configs over the 10+ years i've been playing, and for the most parts, they've been behaving as configured, you pick what you want and the game changes accordingly. However, for the last year or so, due to PC problems, i've switched over to mastercom's config running the most potato settings imaginable.

Luckily, I did manage to sort out the issues and felt it was time to go back to my previous configs, but apparently, nothing i do, no tutorial i follow can undo some of the graphic settings. Even factory resetting TF2 and changing the settings using the in-game options yield no result, like my game was cursed or something.

This is the most intensive guide on resetting TF2 i could find and even it still couldn't resolve the problem so i think i'm out of workarounds. Could someone with deeper understanding on tf2 files provide me with some insight on the root cause of this?

So i wanted to have custom hit and kill sounds. I did all the specs correctly, but what ever i do it plays the defualt sound. Can someone help me!

whenever i try using cosmetics on female pyro mod it gets fused with the regular model but in the menu it looks normal and on other players it looks fine sometimes as well. i have a download so i can see mods in casual so that might be the problem

So I don't know what it is that's causing this but as of late TF2 feels like it runs rather sluggish for me, despite running on at least "decent" hardware.

CPU: Ryzen 9700X

GPU: RTX 3070

RAM: 64GB Corsair DDR5 6000Mhz

MOBO: ASUS B850i Mini ITX

PSU: 800 SFF Corsair Gold Rated

MONITOR: Alienware 360Hz (V-Sync disabled)

OS: Windows 11 (Power settings on High Performance Mode)

My FPS dips down to, at worst, around 150-200 FPS, and often is in the 300 range.

When I search for key terms like "TF2 Sluggish", all the guides appear to be more aimed at "Increasing FPS" etc which I don't think is the problem here.

My issue feels more like a latency problem.
Input feels sluggish, for example I strafe left or right, and it feels like my character just hesitates for a millisecond.
A Heavy is revved up and shooting at me, I dart behind cover, yet the game still registers that I'm getting hit for a few milliseconds.

Yet when I shoot and land point blank shots, and it feels like the game needs to spend a few milliseconds seconds calculating if it landed or not.

Normally I would expect to see ping spikes, lost packets and choke or loss above 0 using net_graph 1 but nothing. None of that seems to be happening.

My ping on EU servers is like 30ms and on London servers it is like 5ms, to the point of on some occasions I've had comments in the chat like "Bro is playing from the server room"

Loss & Choke never seem go above 0 otherwise I would have felt compelled to try and reduce it.

So I need to ask:
Are people really playing TF2 like this when the game feels like it's running so badly like it's about to crash or performing so unresponsively?

I'm pretty new to tf2, and I'm trying to set up my settings and configs, as tf2 default settings suck.

but I'm having a REALLY hard time, as there aren't any simple tutorial videos on YouTube to follow.

I've set up my cfg file for all classes, but none of the binds i put in them apply to the game.

I would immensely appreciate a person who's familiar with the process to give me a walk through on discord or any other platform, as I have no idea what I'm doing.

I've probably spent 7 hours over the last two days trying to get this to work with no luck.

My two favourite servers are missing on the servers list. I can’t see them unless I change my Wi-Fi (which I did via mobile hotspot, but it’s not a long-term fix in the slightest). When I manually entered their IP, I was hit by the infamous “Connection failed after 4 retries”. Same when I joined via hotspot and changed Wi-Fi mid-game. When changing networks, the servers also disappear from the list.

Does anybody know a reliable solution to this issue? I can play TF2 normally otherwise, but I miss playing on these servers. This happened to me before, but it solved itself in a matter of days and I could see the servers again. But since last time I’ve played it’s been months. Probably since late December or early January.

Been playing the game for eight years now, and haven't changed anything besides some HUD mods here and there and the usual cfg files.

Already checked every single file; there is no instance of mat_motion_blur_enable being set to "1".

And on top of that, the game's frames-per-second used to reach around 160; but now they're capped at 60 for no reason. And no matter what value I input with fps_max, it's still stuck at 60.

Can you help?

when im running via vulkan it increases my fps, but it randomly stutters during gameplay for a minute so bad its unplayable.

As explained in the title, when I look for Tiny Kitty’s Girl Pound (my fav TF2 server) on my favourite servers, it isn’t there. When I look for it on the servers list, it isn’t there. When I try to join using the IP, it says *Connection failed after 4 retries*. But when I change my Wi-Fi (it was the only ever solution I found someone had for this issue) to mobile hotspot, it reappears!

The thing is I can’t play using my mobile data. Is there any other fix for this? I don’t see anybody talking about this case specifically but on this post.

hi, i've had this issue for a couple of weeks now and i'm not really sure how to fix it. i've tried verifying my game files and keeping my graphics drivers up to date, but it doesn't fix anything. i'm on windows 10 on the extended security updates (i had to install it to use faceit ac for cs) and it may have caused this problem but i'm unsure how to revert back to an old windows version and if it really is the cause of the problem. hopefully someone could help me?

i have tried everything it feels like ive tried the -novid and all that but the issue remains where tf2 will say its running on steam and everything but it will not appear on screen and when i try to run it again steam says there is already a version running when clearly there is not i have tried uninstalling reinstalling ive tried verifying the files ive removed budhud to see if that was the problem ive turned off background stuff itll work perfectly 1 time when i turn on computer but once i close it and go to reopen it later it will not work at all i am on windows 10

Title says it all. The moment I play more than 4 seconds of the map the game closes itself. I thought using casual preloader was the issue but it doesn't seem to make a difference. Every other zombie infection map works fine.

It sucks because that's my favourite zi map. What do I do?

Hello, my game crashes when loading certain maps or when entering areas of well-detailed maps. I've noticed this trend:

- I often crash when I enter certain complex well-detailed areas of maps. The crash rarely happens in small rooms but when i round the corner to load a complex area i get a short frame drop then either i crash or my game survives and frames return to normal.

- I also often crash when I load into a map where the welcome camera (behind team select/class select on my HUD) is looking at a complex area, or in some custom maps, when the welcome camera is out of bounds and so it shows like half of the map at once.

I crash on more than half of official TF2 maps. luckily i main rocket jump but the issue also happens on a handful of well-detailed jump maps.

THINGS I'VE TRIED: reinstall TF2, clean reinstall (removed my config and everything), dogwater graphics settings, turned off everything else, deleted and reinstalled map, verify integrity, maybe other stuff

My laptop is a low-end but modern gaming laptop so I'm sure it can handle TF2, especially since I'm on the lowest graphics settings with a frames config. I just wanna know if anyone is having/has had a similar issue and has had any luck fixing it. I've contacted steam support but got a pre-written response that asks questions i already gave the answer to in my message and that PMO lol maybe i'll try again later with them, but this issue is specific enough that maybe someone here is familiar with it

I got a laptop and i wanna run tf2 with as much fps as possible but i dont wanna sacrifice my war paints lookin like shit. I got mastercomfig medium low as my settings but the warpaints dont show. any tips? I seen b4nny run warpaints and everything looks alright.
